This is what happened to the web when the software industry never spent a moment thinking about long term stability. About users. About usability. About anything other than features and a fast buck.
Among many other failings.
Would be nice to some professionalism in future. One can hope, but I despair.

I struggle to process the fact that Todd Blanche gave my husband his very first job offer in law.
(Yes, THAT Todd Blanche from the DoJ, deputy attorney general, the one who has been in the news for all kinds of terrible things he’s up to)
I went to a party with that guy 3 years ago! And now he’s doing increasingly cartoonish villain things every other week.
He seemed normal. Fun, actually.
And then months after he went to defend Trump as his personal lawyer and since then we’ve continued to be confused and disturbed.
We haven’t had any contact with him after he went to work for Trump, of course. But I can’t stop wondering how the fuck the person my husband worked with is the same person defending pedophiles. (Allegedly)

A ten kraj z kolei wykorzystuje go do produkcji bomb i amunicji dostarczanej izraelskiej armii i wykorzystywanej w Gazie.
Cytując opracowanie: “Bez trotylu (TNT) wyprodukowanego w Polsce niemożliwa byłaby bezprecedensowa skala i intensywność bombardowań z powietrza, które pochłonęły życie dziesiątek tysięcy Palestyńczyków i zniszczyły warunki życia w Strefie Gazy”.

Don’t get me wrong: I think it is •still• worth haranguing congress to use the powers they have and crank all these legal gears as hard as they can. It’s perhaps worth it now more than ever as the MAGA coalition falters and politicians look to their own post-Trump survival. There are battles to win there.
I’m just saying we shouldn’t pin our primary hopes on the legal system. Massive, relentless popular opposition is the bedrock here.

I find it hard, however, to take completely seriously a legal strategy document of this length that (1) imagines Congress doing any of this and (2) mentions the SCOTUS only twice, and then only in reference to its past upholding of law. I’m not convinced this is a piece that fully appreciates the severity of the current situation and the degree of institutional rot.

- but also illuminates a larger concept, a bigger picture?
I don’t just want tutorials; I want writing that illuminates. I’m thinking of things where you read it and had a reaction like:

One side wants to treat people respectfully and be welcoming and kind and have a fun time.
The other side wants to remove (deny medical care, disenfranchise, lock away, deport, kill, genocide etc.) people they don't like.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io
2025-10-23 02:35:28

"But but we also thought animals were pure machines and didn't have sentience!!!!"
This is like a set of nested dolls of logical fallacies:
0. (Preamble) Being wrong before doesn't mean other people are wrong right now.
1. Just because you were wrong about animals not being machines doesn't mean machines aren't being machines.
2. You're actually not talking about machines, but about algorithms (who happen to be running on a machine, but could just as well be calculated manually by a human).
3. LLM models themselves aren't even an algorithm—they're literally just a large number of large numbers.
So what you're really asking is "Can many llarge numbers be concious and sentient?"
This answers itself.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io
2025-10-23 02:20:29

LLMs don't have physicality, they are (and this is a huge inaccurate stretch) a simulation of how maybe a small part of brains might possibly work in a hugely simplified and abstracted way; an algorithm that is executed on a bunch of graphics cards—the same algorithm could be done manually on paper (with enough time).
Because they're not physical they don't exist.
Therefore there's no epistemology to be had about "do they have sentience or consciousness".
