Recent polling shows the majority disapprove of how ICE operates.
But to truly stop the damage requires going further
– it means eradicating the security logic that ever made people think that arming a secret police on an ethnic cleansing mission could ever make them safe.
Formed in 2003, during the embarrassing and disastrous national excesses of the post-9/11 era
– when the nation launched two ill-fated forever wars, and demonized Muslim immigrants

Thank you all for 3,000 followers on here! Here’s a photo of Danny to celebrate the occasion ☺️
3 years into being part of Mastodon, I continue to be impressed with how wonderful the people here are and how much this social network actually FEELS social. People replying to one another, having conversations, learning things, sharing moments of joy, making friends.
Mastodon brought my business clients, helped me gain confidence in my own voice, freed me from dependence on big tech and algorithms, rekindled my interests, introduced me to incredible people and projects, and served as a source of hope in humanity in the times when cynicism and nihilism felt all but inevitable.
I love our little corner of the internet, and am so glad that it’s still here despite everyone who professed it was doomed to fade into irrelevance.
Thank you to everyone reading these words for being here on the Fedi. The world is a little better thanks to your choice to support an independent web.

One of the things that made organizing a lot easier with the GDC was a thing called "GDC in a box." It was a zip file with all kinds of resources. There was a directory structure, templates for all kinds of things like meetings and paperwork you had to file (for legal reasons) and "read me" files.
We had all kinds of support. There were people you could talk to who had been there. There were people you could call to walk through legal paperwork (taxes). Centralized orgs are vulnerable and easy to infiltrate. They're easy for states to shut down. But there are benefits to org structures.
I think it's possible to have the type of support we had with the GDC, but without the politics of an org (even the IWW). I hope this most recent essay has some of the same properties. I hope that it makes building something new, something no one has really imagined before, easier.
This whole project is something a bit different. It's a collective vision and collective project, from the ground up. Some of it has felt like a brain dump, just getting things that have been swimming around in my head down somewhere. But I hope this feels more like an invitation.
Everything thus far written is all useless unless people do things with it. Only from that point does it become a thing that lives, a thing with its own consciousness that can't be controlled by any individual human.
Tech billionaire cultists want to bring a new era of humanity with AGI. That is definitely not possible with LLMs, and may not be possible at all. But there is a super intelligence that is possible, though it's been constrained by capitalism: collective human intelligence.
The grand vision of the tech dystopians is that of the ultimate slave that can then enslave all humans on their behalf. I think we can build a humanity that can liberate itself from their grasp, crush their vision, and build for itself a world in which people will never be enslaved again. Not only do I think it's possible, I think it's necessary. I think there are only two choices: collective liberation or death.
And that's what I plan to write about next time to wrap this whole project up. Today things often feel impossible. But people talked about the Middle Ages as though they were the end of the world, and then everything changed in unimaginable ways. Everything can, and will, change again.
"The profit motive often is in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings."

The working class is the fundamental force that produces the material conditions necessary for the reproduction of society, and through our collective labor we not only create food, shelter, healthcare, education, transportation, and communication networks, but we also sustain and reproduce the conditions that allow every aspect of social life to continue functioning, so that even those who do not work, whether they are managers, bureaucrats, or capitalists, depend entirely on our labor for …

Black-and-white portrait of Rudolf Rocker on the left. On the right, a quote reads: “We have come more and more under the dominance of mechanics and sacrificed living humanity to the dead rhythm of the machine without most of us even being conscious of the monstrosity of the procedure. Hence we frequently deal with such matters with indifference and in cold blood as if we handled dead things and not the destinies of men.” The quote is attributed to Rudolf Rocker.
Content warning: AGI pontification

If AGI fails to happen, then humanity stays relevant.
If AGI happens and proceeds to superintelligence that invents all the sci-fi things, then maybe it invents a way for humans to enhance their intelligence, and humanity (or what once was humanity) stays relevant that way.
The worst case for humanity (or at least for people like me!) might actually be if progress stalls right after AGI. Smart enough to replace people en masse, not smart enough to solve the hard problems.

We urgently need to overcome the capitalist law of value and democratise our economy, so that we can organise production around urgent social and ecological priorities. After all, we are the producers of the goods, the services, the technologies. It is our labour and our planet’s resources that are at stake. And so we must claim the right to decide what is produced, how, and for what purpose.

I’m not saying the answer will always be “no,” but people are wildly, wildly overselling the number of situations in which the answer will be “yes.”
Sometimes the answer is “no” because incorrectness is a deal-breaker — and that scenario’s been getting a lot of attention (fake legal briefs, vibe-coding faceplants, etc).
Sometimes, however, the answer is “no” because making something •typical• isn’t really helpful. Where humanity needs to come to the foreground, homogeneity is positively unhelpful. Here’s a fascinating example:

The thing that Renee Good now knows, that Tortuguita knows, that Heather Heyer knows, that I only know because I glimpsed for a second, is that when you die fighting oppression you live forever in that memory of resistance. When we carve their names into a monument, along with all the other names of the murdered and disappeared, that will stand, perhaps, across from the statue of Willem in the park where the Northwest Detention Center once stood, they will always be reminders of what it looks like to sacrifice everything in order to be on the right side of history.
The names of those who resist live as ghosts, summoned by name to haunt future oppressors, summoned by name to awaken our own conscience to the call. Martyrs, whispered like the White Rose or yelled as a threat like John Brown, cannot die so long as any of us with a bit of spine carries even an ounce of humanity.
It is possible to die knowing you did the right thing, and I have felt it. There is an acceptance that is impossible to imagine without being there, without feeling it for yourself. You have nothing to fear in resisting, even if it ends you. But you will never forget the shame of doing nothing if you fail to.

Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you've no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain!

It's time to crush the patriarchy.
Humanity has to start by ridding itself of religion, because it underpins male hegemony.
No more monarchies.
No private landownership.
Cooperation, not capitalism.
Careful stewardship of the world's resources.
Fair distribution of resources.
Distributed smaller scale energy generation - because power shouldn't mean power over others.

Say what you will about consumerism, but at least ripping people off is a form of having an actual relationship between human beings. An awful, sick relationship, but a relationship! Sales and marketing require that, at some level, you still view customers as people with thoughts and needs and desires and inner lives.
Now increasingly we run into things like the OP where even ripping people off is more acknowledgement of humanity than a company is willing to give.

From the D-Day ceremony in Normandy, France on Jun 6, 2024, marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
A WWII veteran tried to kiss Zelensky’s hand. #Zelensky stopped and hugged him. “No, you saved Europe. You are our hero.”
A leader who has the humanity to respect & revere our veterans. Imagine that.

The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan is a non-fiction book published in 1995.
I just finished reading it and I swear to you it is as relevant today as when it was written. As if 30 years haven't passed. Humanity keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over again and again.

What’s disgusting is speaking to a Palestinian person in Gaza this way.
Maybe Mastodon server admins should check for basic humanity before allowing people on. Unless that’s not a necessary prerequisite for membership in your community, of course. lemmy.ca/comment/20336687

Good Morning #Canada
2026 has been designated as the International Year of the Woman Farmer by the United Nations, in an effort to increase and improve food security across the planet. Once again we call upon the fairer sex to save humanity.
Women led farms are on the rise in Canada. From the 2021 #StatsCan report, there were 80,000 female farm operators, representing 30% of total farm operators, up from 25% in 1991. In general female participation is increasing while men are decreasing. Farming is an industry where women operators can achieve wage parity with male counterparts because compensation is based on market conditions, but currently most women led farms are smaller with less annual revenues.
A helpful #AI tells me a female farmer could could be called a farmerette, a farmeress, or farmHER. So helpful...
Two articles are linked - a feel good news piece from the CBC, and more solid demographic info from FCC-FAC.ca.

I wish I could be this enthusiastic about abandoning my unhealthy vices…
I really miss elements of drinking and smoking. I was never a really heavy drinker just a frequent one. Pisses me off that I can no longer have a glass of wine in the evening and feel chipper in the AM. So I just stopped.
Smoking was also annoying but easy. My wife’s health insurance provider has a surcharge for smokers. So I quit.
These are parts of my evidence for my non-humanity.

(E.B. White writes about Hope, to a man who has lost faith in humanity.)
Dear Mr. Nadeau:
As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing that is left to us, in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness.

I’ve lost a lot of respect for Andrewism after his recent upload. It feels disconnected from the reality of working-class life and from anarcho-syndicalism as it actually exists.
This response is a worthwhile read. It doesn’t romanticize work or the working class, but it doesn’t drift into abstract alternatives either. It sits with the fact that we don’t want to be working class, but we are, and that contradiction isn’t something you escape with theory.
I strongly relate to what’…

The state has become an existential threat to humanity in multiple ways. Not only are we *all* at risk of being killed at any time by the monsterous incompetence and malice of these systems (yeah, listen to this: iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-), but we are also slowly being killed by systems enforced and protected by these same entities.
States won't fix climate change. Ecocide is enabled by the existence of states.
Maybe... just maybe... it's time to think of other ways to organize ourselves.

I’ve had this contingent of the language police show up in my replies a few times now over the word “cosplay,” and look…
OK, I get it, I get the instinct to say “Don’t drag me into this!” and I applaud the effort to push fascists out of communities, yes to all that…
…and also we need to recognize that what ICE is doing absolutely •is• cosplay. The word means “costume play.” It refers to assembling and wearing costumes that are not necessarily functional, but show affinity for a particular subculture by reproducing characters from that subculture’s popular narratives.
ICE are cosplaying Call of Duty. That is an accurate description of what’s happening. (Listen to “Gear.”)
I make software and I make music. I don’t think either one of those things •should• be about violence. I don’t •want• them to be about violence. But both are used in the service of violence, like it or not. I shout the violence out whenever it shows up. But would be ridiculous for me to point at what Palantir does and say “That’s not software!” Unfortunately, it •is• software. To deny that would be beyond self-defeating; it would be irresponsible.
ICE •is• doing cosplay, and we hate it. It’s an insult to the cosplay subculture. It is an insult to the whole of humanity. Fascism creeps into all of our spheres, into every beloved craft and community, and the response is never to pretend it’s not there. The response is to drive it out.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made it clear that he’d prefer we all quit the term "AI Slop".
“We need to get beyond the arguments of slop vs sophistication,”
Nadella wrote in a rambling post flagged by Windows Central, arguing that humanity needs to learn to accept AI as the
“new equilibrium” of human nature.
Going on, Nadella said that we now know enough about
“riding the exponentials of model capabilities”
as well as managing AI’s

I think it is fair to say that most well-to-do people would not uproot generational homelands and livelihood to take a chance being an unknown in a foreign landscape, even if one has connections there, and yet, this current migration dwarfs the post-WWII flux. Sure, maybe I myself set out on the horizon in search of (mild) adventure, but I find it hard to believe 4% of humanity are crazy like me.
That alone speaks volumes at how successful we are at governing the planet, assuming, of course, that data matters in the least, which, presently, it does not.

it would used by everyone,
filled with everything and,
crucially, it would be free.
Today, the British computer scientist’s creation is regularly used by 5.5 billion people
– and bears little resemblance to the democratic force for humanity he intended.
In Australia to promote his book, "This is for Everyone",
