The only time it's a good idea to yell, "I HAVE DIARRHEA" is while playing Scrabble.
…I’m asking us to pause all of that entrenched reaction, and think about why our reaction was:
“What a bad product! How douchy! Ha ha!”
…instead of what was in hindsight probably a much better reaction:
“Oh, what a good idea for a product •direction•! All-electric human-sized transportation…huh, that might just change the world! If we can improve on this very clumsy first attempt at execution….”
First experiments on optimizing efficiency / usage of the microscope bench workstation went... Poorly.
The first, grander, idea was to grab a spare SSD, install xcp-ng on it, and use the box as a second VM server with the microscope software running in a guest with USB passthrough to the mouse, keyboard, joystick, camera, and stage.
This would let me push CI jobs to the extra CPU cores when it wasn't busy, as well as live-migrating VMs for critical services to prevent downtim…
While Pentagon budgets have steadily increased over recent decades,
the arms industry has become more consolidated, more automated,
and less labor-intensive
— upending the idea that the warfare state is an effective economic development strategy for working people,
and strengthening the case for a state-led shift toward a civilian industrial base focused on green manufacturing
So the answer is that the value is in the idea that they can scare you into compliance. If you can't be scared, if you're already ready, then you remove the value. "AI" for mass surveillance is still mostly a grift, where the worst people in the world are being conned by the other worst people in the world.

Playing Terra Nil right now, and it's funny because from the promo stuff I thought I wouldn't like it much, yet I'm enjoying myself a lot. There's definitely a game design lesson to be leaned here.
I was absolutely correct in my assessment that the game feels like it's actively trying to make suspension of disbelief as hard as possible with its completely ridiculous mechanics that make absolutely zero sense. "That's... Not how that works at all!" Is basically playing on repeat in my brain.
Furthermore, the entire technosolutionist tenor of the game rubs me very much the wrong way. This compounds with the physics- and biology-defying (or perhaps -spiting) fictional layer in cases like the convenient magical radiation-absorbing buildings so that you can reverse radiation contamination with a few simple clicks to be extremely bad politics actually...
But... The mechanics do work together quite well to make interesting puzzles with good gameplay that includes satisfying variety and challenges. The art is wonderful, and the music and audio design are spot on. The the result of each level is immensely satisfying, and the pacing is excellent.
I guess the lesson I'm taking away from this is that really solid fundamentals can triumph over an absolute cacophony of ludonarrative dissonance. That doesn't mean that in every decision between ludonarrative harmony (or just straight up believability) and neat mechanics you should compromise towards mechanics, but it reinforces the idea that if you make the mechanics enjoyable in the abstract, players (or at least, players like me) will be willing to compromise a *lot* on whether it actually makes any sense for things to work that way.
I'm still bothered by the "use technology to fix everything" politics, which prevents this game from being one I'll enthusiastically recommend, but despite myself I am having a lot of fun with it.

Essentially, we seem to know that super intelligence can't exist due to computability constraints. (You can't build any computer big or powerful enough to actually be the AGI god they're trying to create.) But I don't know if we have any idea what the limit is before that.
LLMs (and SLMs) are very efficient at very specific tasks, far better than humans. But they are not better for a lot of tasks. It may just always be prohibitively expensive to use LLMs for certain tasks.
We've already run in to training ceilings where additional training decreases performance. We've run in to security problems (like guard rails basically can't ever actually exist because there are infinitely many ways around them, and those ways can literally just be solved for. See https://llm-attacks.org/)

I'm wondering how plausible it would be for the new ngscopeclient CI to have a private web form (probably just restricted by simple https basic auth with creds shared among project maintainers) to request a build of a specific commit in order to enable testing of PRs.

First called Decoration Day, the holiday involved decorating the graves of Civil War soldiers and commemorating their sacrifices.

One last example:
The first LLM code example that really made my eyes pop was early after the release of GPT, when somebody got it to combine Breakout with Conway’s Game of Life (a truly delightful idea). It worked!
Funny thing: the Breakout code and the Life code had a •completely• different style and flavor. Red flag. In about 15 minutes of web searching, I was able to find one of the projects (can’t remember if it was the Breakout or the Life half) which it had copied wholesale, with just a few variable renames. And the other half? It was in Python, but it used dictionaries where it really should have used objects — tons of `thing["prop"]` where it should have said `thing.prop`, and lots of other un-Pythonic stuff besides. It was a machine translate of code from another language, very likely Javascript.
The entire thing was a plagiarized Breakout and a plagiarized Game of Life, one transpiled, and all stuck together in a single run loop. To be fair, figuring out how to (1) run both halves of the logic from a single loop and (2) count the Life cells as Breakout bricks is work I'd cheer on from a second-semester intro CS student! It's not, however, quite what's being sold by these companies.
