#libreoffice bugs can be quite fun; they often have slide decks and documents attached which don't quite work. One I just fixed was from a Biker group, with a morbid slide on what members had died from - showing most weren't from biking - alas a numbered list screwup had 12 bee sting deaths instead of 1 (among other problems)

So, I was typing in #LibreOffice Writer and wanted to use the French phrase tête-Š-tête. I don't have a French keyboard, so I typed "tete-a-tete" and thought I'd let spell check add the diacritics.
Instead I got the image shown. Maybe it's just me, but if the phrase "tech-a-tete" is in the default spell checker (and I promise I did not add it) surely the far…

Screen capture showing that LibreOffice Writer's spell checker is aware of the phrase "tech-a-tete" but not "tete-a-tete".

When asking an LLM about an open source codebase it may be doing that based on previous stuff it learnt, not so much the code you just gave it; I'd asked Qwen3 to summarize some of #LibreOffice's code and it was surprisingly good - but then I noticed it could it on a fresh start without having given it the source. On one side, this means it's misleading about how well they can …

OpenDocumentText (*.odt) hell: I used LibreOffice to create a List Template that goes:
1. First Level
a. Second Level
- Third
- Level
- Items
Works well when assigned to a Paragraph Template. It's for something semi-legal like by-laws.
Wrote a 30 line "test case" document with it. Works well in LibreWriter.
Looks like shit when opened in TextMaker. Multi-line paragraph's second line start at the left m…

Teenager has just suggested some of the programs, which I was under the impression were via the browser, may need to be on desktop.
This might mean Wine I guess?
And probably some kind of microsoft office install? I was hoping to get away with libreoffice..
Anybody have any experience with wine?
I will in any case have to contact the IT support at the school I think. I hope I am not the only parent doing so with the #EndOf10 .
Meanwhile, over on the laptop, the Linux Mint is installed (in danish even) and seems to be restarting without the USB

Then I kept on modifying and saving it for two weeks.

I ditched Office 365 and switched to LibreOffice a few weeks ago.
I had to switch the user interface setting from "standard toolbar" to "tabs" to feel familiar, but I am quite happy now.

Once again I wonder "Do the authors/maintainers of LibreOffice actually use it?"
For example, I am here on MacOs (Tahoe) and the buttons in LibreWriter to control Bold, Italic, etc are effectively same-color-on-same-color-background, in other words, unreadable. The only time they are actually visible is when the "Dark" theme is used.
Almost every time I use LibreOffice I am reminded why people pay actual $$ for products like Word/Office365.

I don’t know what bothers me more: That "lock aspect ratio" is not the default for images in PowerPoint, or that people don't notice (or don't care) if their slides contain heavily distorted pictures. (LibreOffice Impress is also hell to work with, but at least it does not make this mistake.)

Or one could use LibreOffice or Apache OpenOffice and not be dependent on some distant service provider.
Online office suites confuse me. It’s unclear what *modern* problem they address. Sharing files is a solved problem. Common data formats exist. mastodon.social/@DevOpsPink/11

My wife runs linux, but she keeps a windows 10 VM around for exactly one thing: MS Office 2016. She needs it to ensure that grants from her lab sent to governments are formatted exactly right, something that libreoffice unfortunately still doesn't get right.
But man, even windows 10 has so much absolute garbage running in the background. It's probably time for a windows reinstall, or to see if wine will run it successfully (or something like linoffice:

#FreeSoftwareAdvent I couldn't work without LibreOffice or Thunderbird. The former is a fantastic and comprehensive office suite, and the latter is Mozilla's IMAP and POP3 email client.
I suggested using them years ago at a work meeting, and since then, Microsoft tools have been discarded in favor of their opensource alternatives.
