That was quick and disappointing: Project “Tumbleweed” died faster than a mayfly. The reason: the built-in Intel WLAN card is recognized correctly, but I can't use it to connect to the router. “Waiting for authorization” in an endless loop, and eventually it crashes.

Windows laptop is so gummed up it's taking minutes to react to simple search in the directories. And I can only conclude onedrive is the issue here, possibly also #EndOf10? I have disconnected the wifi while I try to run the backup.
So far the linux mint download to USB drive from danish hosted mirror site has been the easy part! 5/n

Teenager has just suggested some of the programs, which I was under the impression were via the browser, may need to be on desktop.
This might mean Wine I guess?
And probably some kind of microsoft office install? I was hoping to get away with libreoffice..
Anybody have any experience with wine?
I will in any case have to contact the IT support at the school I think. I hope I am not the only parent doing so with the #EndOf10 .
Meanwhile, over on the laptop, the Linux Mint is installed (in danish even) and seems to be restarting without the USB
holding breath here...

Linux Mint is often shilled as a lightweight distro that runs great on older hardware. Well, turns out the Cinnamon Desktop actually requires a certain amount of GPU performance to render smoothly.
On my old laptop Intel HD Graphics 4000, the entire Desktop only runs at ~30 FPS. The Xfce/MATE Editions run at 60 with occasional drops.
I didn't expect that from Cinnamon. Even KDE Plasma ran better.

Guten Morgen,
seit vorgestern: Linux Mint 22.2 "Zara" ist draußen und ich würde das Update gern sofort anstoßen. Aber ich habe a) keine Zeit und b) dadurch natürlich auch keine Zeit, ein komplettes Image zu ziehen. Das muß aber sein, denn wie heißt es: Kein Backup, kein Mitleid! Aber in der Regel läufts problemlos durch, kein Thema.
So, heute nochmal richtig reinhauen und dann Wochenende (Wandern bayerischer Wald)

Was mich bis heute seit dem Umstieg auf Mint nervt, ist, dass es keine keine einheitlich Pfadwahl gibt.
Bei manchen Tools muss ich erst CTRL . oder CTRL L (keine Ahnung wann welches) wählen, bevor ich einen Pfad im Dialog (entpacken, speichern, öffnen) einfügen kann. Unter Windows funktioniert in 99% der Fälle einfach CTRL V und enter

With all Gentoo, Nix, Slackware, FreeBSD shizzle (and I love it) I can tell you nothing beats the ease and completeness of Linux Mint.
Just installed LMDE 7 beta and it's amazing.
Any day of the week us geeks have to recommend this, once it is out of beta, to newcomers in Linux.

Was able to grab and install Lagrange (for accessing Gopher/Gemini sites) here on my laptop that has Mint on it, just by searching for Lagrange in the Software Manager (gotta love Linux). Installed, launched-- and yeah, it really is a great, clean GUI. Also, you can see my Rogue desktop background 😂

That Gentoo feel, and that Mint one... The install of Calculate Linux Cinnamon took exactly 14 minutes, partitioning, pipewire and update included. Nifty distro, had some previous looks at it but now for a longer test. And it stays very close to Gentoo, but improves some generic processes for the end user (updating, cleaning cruft etc). Nice! 🐮

Sidste uge har jeg, efter #EndOf10 lavede teenageren's laptop om til #linuxMint. Det var en sjov og lærerig rejse. Jeg var meget glad med resultatet. Teenageren var lidt bekymret at det lignede ikke alle andre..
