CachyOS im Test: Wie schnell kann ein Linux sein?
https://www.
Since I have found that installing #linux has become easier and easier the last few years, I decided to conduct an experiment. I gave my 10 year old daughter a usb stick and had her install it on a Dell laptop from 2011.
I recorded the whole thing (recorded her on my phone while a capture card recorded her screen). And for the most part, it went well. There was an issue about the corre…

Okay, I give up. After several weeks with Linux Mint, I made the switch to Debian Stable today.
Why now in the end?
Although I managed to overcome all the initial difficulties of switching to Mint, I just have my problems with this distribution... not that it's bad, not at all, but it just doesn't suit me.
In the end, Mint is a great distribution for newcomers and those switching from Windows. But I've been working with computers for over 42 years, learned SSP …
@… Funny, I was in the midst of trying Xfce on my Linux Mint, and liked the theming. I agree that Xfce is more themeable than most DEs, but I've decided to go back to Cinnamon, I think. I'll leave Xfce on my PC, in case I change my mind.
I need to get a new laptop for work, where I'll install Linux (Mint, probably, unless otherwise directed) and I'm trying to figure out what model to get.
Can somebody please tell me if the bullshit "AI" features are actually detrimental the same way a dedicated graphics card would be (in my specific scenario)?
I gotta say, the old 2017 MacBook Air I just got (for free!) is a really nice laptop. It's lightweight, the screen is large (enough), and the battery is great!
It sort of blows away the 2010/2012 13" MacBook Pro I installed Linux Mint on a few months ago.
Right now the MBA is running Monterey but at some point I'll probably put Mint on it as well. (Or something else.)

Alternatives to Big Tech/Big Data:
Windows, Apple, Google -> Linux (Debian, Fedora, Mint, Arch...)
Microsoft Office -> LibreOffice (Only Office would also work, but the founders are Russian, who knows...)
Google Android, Apple iOS -> Pixel with GrapheneOS, Fairphone 6 with /e/OS, Brax 3 with iode OS/Ubuntu Touch
OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, etc. -> Nextcloud, MEGA, pCloud, Proton Drive
Outlook, Gmail, etc. -> Proton Mail, Tutanota
Fun fact: NUC's with the Intel N150 are certainly not supported everywhere....
FreeBSD 14.2, 14.3,15.0; Void, MXLinux 23.6ahs, Artix daily 20250609, Ubuntu 25.04 install fine, but don't get past the resulting Grub menu.
Fedora 42, Linux Mint 22.1 (surprising!), Slackware Current liveslak Slackeroni & Mate and the Arch iso do.
And of course our all time fav Win 11 Pro 😜
Something to keep in mind when scoring the latest and greatest for that amazingly low p…
Weird how the Linux Mint subreddit has been taken over by people proudly displaying how cool their desktops look.
I know that after being boxed in by Windows it is nice to get more control but frankly I'd rather read posts by people who need help.

Looks like it's time to migrate ancient data. Thanks, @… !
Luckily, I've got an ancient iMac running Linux. Can use Firewire and the format, and Modern Linux Mint runs great on it.

@… Two tips:
1. There are some Linux distros whose destops are sufficiently similar to Windows that the transition is pretty easy, including Linux Mint and Zorin.
2. Consider partitioning your hard drive when you install Linux and putting your data on a separate partition from the OS. That way, if you decide to change distros, you should be able to keep you…

I've been thinking back and forth for a few days now about whether to stick with Linux Mint or bite the moral bullet and switch back to Fedora.
And the winner is..... (drum roll): Linux Mint!
All in all, the more justifiable decision for me. I was able to eliminate a few minor problems, for example by connecting the printer via USB instead of just via WLAN. This means that printouts are made immediately and not minutes later. These “ghost fractals” on the desktop have also st…
Nye timepriser for konsulentydelser i naboskabet og vennekredsen:
500 kr hvis det har med Windows el. MacOs at gŸre
250 kr hvis det er en Linux (Mint) maskine
Så kan I lære det, kan I!
Well, my first conclusion after, well, about two weeks of using Linux Mint: mixed.
If you've been using Fedora Linux for years, it's a noticeable step backwards. What runs smoothly under Fedora, where devices are recognized without any problems, requires a little extra help with Mint - and often more time...
Examples: I have a Brother DCP3515 multifunction laser printer. Under Fedora, it is recognized immediately via WLAN and if you want to print something, it can be done…

After Linux Mint and Cinnamon looked a bit old-fashioned and dusty, I gave Cinnamon a facelift following these good instructions. Now it looks really cool and modern!

Sometimes I'm silly. Noticed that a fire camera I was watching showed a clock over a minute ahead of my system time, assumed the problems was me. Installed Chrony (Linux Mint, recent Win convert so I'm hardly a power user) and spent the usual 20 minutes farting around with it. Couldn't seem to get it right.
Finally realized my clock IS within a handful of microseconds of the NTP server; it's the clock on the camera that's wrong. D'oh.
I need to try to tether the Mint Linux laptop to an iPhone hotspot for Internet access… hope it works!
Yes, I am a very political person. And that's why the unbelievable has happened in the last few days: as an old Linux and Unix user since the 1980s, I've switched from Fedora to Linux Mint... (and I'm still using FreeBSD too)
Technically a step backwards, as Fedora is far more up-to-date and modern, but politically and morally a step forward. Why?
Here in Europe, since the fascist, racist, narcissist, uneducated primitive moron and would-be dictator Trump became presi…
My complete setup is currently as follows:
Linux Mint and FreeBSD on all my computers and notebooks
Pixel 9 with Graphene OS (but will be replaced by a new Fairphone 6 with /e/OS from Murena in the future)
Connected via KDE Connect
Office with LibreOffice
My own Nextcloud for files, photos, calendar and contacts
Hardened Firefox with uBlock Origin
Freetube and Newpipe instead of YouTube
Ecosia search instead of Google
Proton Mail and Tutanota Ma…
@… I was so fed up with Windows 11 that last year I switched to Linux. I started with Zorin, which was good, but then tried Mint and have stayed with that for 9 or so months. I'm very happy.
