@tiotasram@kolektiva.socialJust finished "Snake-Eater" by T. Kingfisher (@…). I'd read and thoroughly enjoyed her "Digger" webcomic, and found this book to be quite enjoyable too. There's something indelibly heartwarming about an anxious character growing to feel more comfortable and self-assured, especially when escaping and unlearning emotional abuse, and I'm certainly a sucker for heartwarming characters. I like the way that Kingfisher has taken time to talk about and try to avoid cultural appropriation, in a way that I feel is reasonable, although of course I'm not an expert judge of the nuances and I'm biased by having liked the book, so I'm willing to be told things are complicated in that regard it others judge differently. I also really liked the window dressing of a vaguely solarpunk future society, in a book that's not at all about that society. I'd love to see Kingfisher write something focused on how that society could work (or maybe she already has?).

Abstract: The hydroelastic response of free floating viscoelastic covers is measured using Faraday waves on the surface of a vertically oscillated fluid layer. We systematically vary the thickness $d$ of the covers to investigate its effect on the hydroelastic dispersion relation, the damping and the isotropy of the waves. Compared to bare fluids, the wave patterns are disordered. Various methods are explored to define and analyze the wavelengths, the isotropy, and shape of the waves. We find a significant difference between the measurements and the theoretical dispersion relation. Over all thicknesses $d$, this is explained by an increase in the in-plane membrane tension, which scales with $d^{3/2}$. Covering waves also has a large efect on their damping. Only for thin covers ($d = 20\: \mu{\rm m}$) the onset amplitude (and thus the damping) can be explained by dissipation in the bulk and in the boundary layer of the water beneath the cover. The same was found for bare water due to the presence of an immobile surface layer. Lastly, we find a large effect of the membrane on the ampitude of the waves, which we attribute to nonlinear wave interaction.

What I'd love to have is a heat map of "how soon can I get there". One where I select my train station, and get a map of all train stations I can reach within N hours, each marked with the earliest arrival time and colored by how late I'll get there. Including all the reasonable transfers.
Say, the first train from here goes to Konin, so I get its arrival times marked on all stations towards Konin. Then, I can transfer to a few trains in Poznań, so I get their arrival times on their respective stations. And then all the transfers there, and so on.
So what I'd get is a pretty colorful map, with arrival time getting later with distance, except for major stations where IC trains get earlier than suburban trains, and then backwards from major stations where I can get via IC and then change into suburban going back. It would be such a cool experiment!
And honestly, I could start playing with it even with a partially automated tool: one that lets me select a given train and updated the map if it arrived somewhere earlier than I had before.

But assuming I didn't fire them, I would
1) tell them to shut it down immediately
2) tell them to talk to a lawyer.
LLMs, as a class of user, are clearly not authorized to access the information. By circumventing access controls, they have "knowingly accessed a computer without authorization." Those access restrictions exist to protect against various damages, including bandwidth use and "intellectual property theft" (another concept I'm not a fan of, but anyway). By violating those restrictions they could open themselves up to legal liability.
Now, IANAL. My job is to describe risk. That's a sufficient risk. It actually doesn't even matter if you'd win the case in the end, a lot of people just can't afford to fight.
But, in this case, it tends to be powerful people, for whom the law does not apply, abusing people who neither have the protection of the law nor the money to just ruin someone's life with a flood of lawyers.

Abstract: A central principle in quantum machine learning is that an ansatz should be expressive enough to represent the quantum data of interest. Yet, the expressibility is statistically meaningful only insofar as it can be learned from finitely many copies of an unknown quantum state. In this work, we develop an information-theoretic Occam theory for quantum data generated by finite-size quantum circuits. For the class $S_{n,G}$ of $n$-qubit pure states preparable with at most $G$ two-qubit gates, a metric-entropy argument gives the realizable sample law $\widetilde{\Theta}(G/\epsilon^2)$ in the circuit-limited regime. For an arbitrary source $\hat{\rho}$, we introduce the best $G$-gate approximation error $d_G(\hat{\rho})$ and the approximate circuit complexity $C_\eta(\hat{\rho})$. We prove an agnostic quantum Occam theorem: with $M$ copies, one can learn up to the best $G$-gate approximation error plus a statistical penalty $\widetilde{O}(\sqrt{G/M})$. We then remove the need to know $G$ in advance through an adaptive model-selection theorem whose oracle inequality selects the circuit complexity justified by the data. Matching lower bounds yield a sample-supported expressibility law: at trace-distance accuracy $\epsilon$, $M$ samples can support only $G_{\rm supported} \simeq M\epsilon^2$ gates, up to logarithmic factors and tomography saturation at $2^n$. Thus, the circuit complexity becomes an adaptive statistical resource rather than a static promise. Our framework turns bounded circuit complexity into a model-selection principle for quantum machine learning.

I'm in the middle of designing something — git is inspiration but the wrong tool for this job — but that allows reintegrating diverged collections of materials, and propagating enough information that if you were to merge two folders, you'd get a relevant set of questions about the contents to successfully and meaningfully merge them.
It's aware of the fact that embedded metadata changes.
My goal is to make a library simple enough that one could embed it in an operating system's file browser to surface intelligent behavior, and that it could form the basis of media servers too, taking the scanning-and-recording-files duties.

Now the government wants this from day 1 (currently you only need one if you're sick for longer than 3 days). Doctors are already overworked. Everyone says this is a bad idea, even the health insurance companies. This is going to break local healthcare for absolutely nothing.

The thing is, this knowledge is basically "hot cache". I'm bumping hundreds of #Python packages in #Gentoo, so I remember stuff. And because of that, I can quickly notice some things or answer some questions.
If that were written down, the effort needed to find it would diminish all the gain. I mean, technically *it is* already written down, and the whole point is that I have it "cached".

Finally fixed it yesterday by installing a plugin called "Open Graph and Twitter Card Tags", then checking the box that says,"First image from the post/page content" in the settings. I'm sure there are better ways to fix but it worked for me. I'm actually surprised this turned out as well as it did considering i couldn't see the shutter button on the phone camera lol, much less the screen.
This was an expensive mistake, I spray painted some stuff a while back and forgot to put a sacrificial cover over the respirator face shield. Had to replace it and the new one came with a protective covering to keep it from being scratched during installation so I thought I'd take a pic

I'm not even talking about all the projects that were ensloppified and enshittified already. I'm not talking about all the technical debt. I'm not talking about all the forks that will have to be maintained forever. I'm not talking of all the projects that were abandoned because of burnout, or because they were only hype-oriented. And I'm not talking about all the corporations that will continue submitting slop.
I'm talking about the loss of trust. After all, we're not talking of people who realized they were wrong and are sorry. We're not talking of people realizing that it was wrong to forfeit ethics and morals in the name of "productivity". We're talking of people who are jumping ships because their previous approach turned out not to be profitable anymore. We're talking of gamblers who left the casino because they went broke. They aren't sorry that they gambled; they are sorry that they've lost. And they'd be happy to do it again at the nearest opportunity.
So, I'm sorry to say, but #FreeSoftware is never going to be the same again. A lot of people have shown their true colors, and I won't forget that.
