Today is the federal holiday that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
He was born January 15, 1929.
He was assassinated April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was just 39 years old.
While Dr. King is primarily remembered as a civil rights leader,
he also championed the cause of the poor and organized the Poor People’s Campaign
to address issues of economic justice.
Dr. King was also a fierce critic of U.S. foreign policy an…

“My father warned us, ‘When evil men plot, good men must plan. When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind,’” Bernice King, the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., wrote of Pretti’s murder. “What we are witnessing now (masked raids, people taken without due process, vigilante, Gestapo, and slave patrol-like tactics, normalized under the color of law) is a moral crisis.”

In at the last minute! 2nd track was Vancouver jokers The Plodes' "Horses and Gasoline"
"Martin Luther King fights crime on the surface of the Sun with Karl Marx,
Louis Riel casts a spell and gains control of great white sharks,
Albert Einstein fires a rocket into Rockefeller's face,
FDR defeats Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a race
"Horses and gasoline, apple juice and Vaseline
White-Out and mice, concrete and rice...."

Exactly one year before Dr King was assassinated, on 4 April 1967,
he gave his famous “Beyond Vietnam” speech at Riverside church in New York City.
More than 3,000 people were in attendance.
At the time, King had come under intense fire for having renounced the Vietnam war;
his outspokenness put him at odds with Lyndon Johnson,
who felt King should have been indebted to him for his efforts in pushing through civil rights legislation.
It also put King at …

"A man might be afraid his home will get bombed, ...or he's afraid that he will get shot, or beat down by state troopers, and he may go on and live until he's 80. He's just as dead at 36 as he would be at 80. The cessation of breathing in his life is merely the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit.
A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice."

Wow! Very prophetic words of Dr Martin Luther King in 1967! (The rest of the text surrounding this quote - about 2/3 the way down the speech - is also quite powerful to read.)

A reminder, on Martin Luther King Day, that immigration is one of the things that has always made America great. And worth remembering that if the arc of the moral universe bends towards justice, it is we who must bend it.

My Traditional MLK Day post:

Video clip from “Boondocks” with a white, balding man in a suit sitting in a chair, with a light skinned woman partially in frame on his right, he is saying:
“If Martin Luther King was alive today, he would-“
*he is hit by a thrown folding chair, knocking him on his back*
*A young Black child (Huey Freeman) with long natural hair, wearing a t-shirt and pants runs on screen with his fist raised and starts beating him*
*picture cuts to “Please Stand By” multicolor test pattern
