train_terrorists: Madrid train bombing terrorists (2004)
A network of associations among the terrorists involved in the 2004 Madrid train bombing, as reconstructed from press stories after-the-fact. Edge weights encode four levels of connection strength: friendships, ties to Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden, co-participants in wars, and co-participants in previous terrorist attacks.
This network has 64 nodes and 243 edges.

at the very end of tulip season I allowed myself to cut a bouquet. having it on my desk might have been a mistake - I got utterly and completely hypnotized by the way how the wind in the tree outside my window that is filtering the sunlight coming in made them look differently from split second to split second. so hard to look away. so many pictures taken. so many decisions to make. but now tulip season is truly over.
which one do you like better, and why?

closeup of a bouquet of wilting tulips in shades of light pink and dark yellow tending orange. some flowers are already more wilted than others, the whole thing unevenly lit from the upper left
the same view as in the previous image, just lit slightly differently with slightly different shadow patterns

3. Sa11y is a really great tool: sa11y.netlify.app It’s a live, in-page accessibility audit whose workflow is far, far more useful for actually improving the page than the server-based “enter your URL” online services. Killer features:
- It live-highlights potential issues on the page.
- It lets you dismiss warnings and •remembers that you dismissed them•, so it can offer subjective concerns that require manual review (e.g. “this image is marked as decorative; is that correct?”).
- Per the previous post, it actually respects the contrast setting, because it reports on what’s on the screen.

Back in 1964, microbiologist Tom Brock received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study how life works at high temperatures,
a question that took him to Yellowstone’s hot springs in search of extremophiles.
There, he and his student discovered a bacteria they called Thermus aquaticus,
which had enzymes that could work at incredibly high temperatures.
Two decades later, this discovery paved the way for the development of a technique called polymerase ch…

#fluffy #birds time of year again; these (checks) Coot chicks are adorable.
#wildlife

Two extremely fluffy coot chicks, they are mostly grey fluff, with some white fluff on their chests, and yellow/red/white/black beaks and yellow/one head fluff highlights. They're VERY cute. They're swimming in a pond around lily pads.
The same two coots as in the previous pic, together with one of their parents, partially obscured by a flower stem.
A zoom on coot parent feet, which are underwater here and standing on a decking; they're white with black stripes and have quite a lot of area when standing on them.

In our #ISE2025 lecture last Wednesday, we learned how in n-gram language models via Markov assumption and maximum likelihood estimation we can predict the probability of the occurrence of a word given a specific context (i.e. n words previous in the sequence of words).
#NLP

Slide from the Information Service Engineering 2025 lecture, 03 Natural Language Processing 02, 2.9, Language MOdels:
Title: N-Gram Language Model
The probability of a sequence of words can be computed via contitional probability and the Bayes Rule (including the chain rule for n words). Approximation is performed via Markov assumption (dependency only on the n last words), and the Maximum Likelihood estimation (approximating the probabilities of a sequence of words by counting and normalising …

I think a key reason the AI grift is so devious it it's built on top of an actual product that does have some utility. The grift just promises far more than AI is actually capable of in the foreseeable future.
Previous grifts like crypto and NFTs were entirely vaporware, but when we see AI generated images and text in the wild, it takes a more nuanced understanding to navigate the hype.

It’s going to get worse.
Trumism proceeds by the successive breaking of taboos.
Each time a new one is broken,
the previous one is normalized,
made to look not so bad by comparison.
The cuffing of Padilla was a red-line moment. And yet:
There’s plenty of reason to worry that in four months, we’ll look back on it as a moment of comparative innocence.
