good grief, gnuplot is always a huge battle
here's a graph of the length of day (green, microseconds)
and UT1-UTC (purple, milliseconds)
from 1973 until today
the LoD is the difference from 24h, averaged over the previous 12 months - the LoD is _very_ noisy so it's hard to see the trends from a shorter averaging period
UT1-UTC is the integral of the LoD, with leap seconds to keep it in bounds
things have been a bit weird since 2020 because the LoD …

graph as described in the text; the purple line is spiky and usually trends down from +700ish to -500ish before resetting upwards, but in recent years it has been slowly wobbling upwards from -200 to +100; the green line meanders very roughly downwards from about +3000us in the early 1970s to -100us over the last few years

And all 32 #AmazonLeo satellites have been deployed by the first #Ariane 64: good news for Arianespace and Amazon but probably bad news for astronomy as the previous satellites of this #megaconstellation have proven to be brighter than they should be. As this diagram from the recent paper "Brightness Characterization and Modeling for Amazon Leo Satellites" - arxiv.org/abs/2601.07708 - shows they are almost always brighter than the informally established 7 mag. limit. And there are no indications that the design of the 32 added to the constellation today had been modified to make them dimmer ... while the next Ariane launch will carry more of them.

Content warning: Tech rant : Pixel phone downgrade

At the end of last year, my refurbished Pixel 5a died suddenly (due to a known chip issue), and I went with a used Pixel 9 to replace it.
Every phone I've owned as an adult has been used/refurbished, and I try to hold on to my phones until the wheels fall off. I'm always a bit behind on releases, so every "new" device feels like an improvement.
This is the first time that I've felt like my "new" phone is a regression from the previous one.

“The barrier to creating software has genuinely dropped. That is not hype. What it means for professional engineers is not that their skills are less valuable, but that the skills that matter have shifted up the stack, as they have in every previous transition.
The developers who thrived after the move from assembly to C were not the ones who could write the most clever assembly. They were the ones who understood what the machine needed to do and could express that intent clearly in a higher-level language. The developers who thrived after the move to managed languages and frameworks were not the ones most resistant to garbage collection. They were the ones who saw the freed-up cognitive capacity as an opportunity to solve harder problems.
The developers who will thrive in the agentic era are the ones who understand this as another step in the same arc and invest accordingly. Not in resisting the tools. Not in deferring to them uncritically. In developing the judgment, clarity, and systems thinking that make the tools maximally effective.
That means writing better specs. Investing in test infrastructure. Developing genuine architectural understanding rather than surface familiarity. Building the taste to evaluate output rigorously. Practicing problem decomposition until it becomes second nature.
The era of programming as primarily a keystroke activity is over. The era of programming as primarily a thinking and judgment activity has been accelerating for decades and just shifted into a higher gear.”

train_terrorists: Madrid train bombing terrorists (2004)
A network of associations among the terrorists involved in the 2004 Madrid train bombing, as reconstructed from press stories after-the-fact. Edge weights encode four levels of connection strength: friendships, ties to Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden, co-participants in wars, and co-participants in previous terrorist attacks.
This network has 64 nodes and 243 edges.

State Department will delete all its tweets sent prior to second Trump presidency.
In many ways this is bad, but it's also understandable - there's a balance between continuity and demonstrating change when administrations change. In many ways it's a failure of X to not provide a labelling system to automatically mark posts as being from a previous administration and not necessarily reflecting policy.

Bizarrely warm end of the winter, here in the Netherlands: average temperature in the last part of February (21-28/29) was more than a full degree higher than the previous record set just five years ago:
10.5°C, that's warmer than the already warmed 1991-2020 average for April!
Peak was above 17°C.

Democrats watched with mouths agape this week as Latino voters,
many of whom have sat out previous primary seasons,
turned out in droves for James Talarico in Texas.
But the push to win back the elusive and swingy coalition that proved pivotal to Donald Trump’s 2024 victory goes way beyond the closely watched Lone Star State.
This is a story that kicked off last year as Democrats overperformed in Latino-dominant districts across Virginia and New Jersey.
It’s o…

So, I have an answer to my previous question about GPU transfer efficiency.
Original code: write data to staging buffer on CPU, vkCopyBuffer to GPU local memory, run int-float32 conversion on GPU out of that buffer. The copy operation shows 50% SM occupancy by compute warps, 50% unallocated warp slots in active SMs.
GPU memory write bandwidth is sitting around 2%, about 1.9 ms copy/shader run time.

a horizontal format view looking through the interstices of a white and green Hippeastrum flower in the process of opening. The Hippeastrum buds are fully visible, in focus and catching the sunlight streaming in from the window they are standing in front of. Through the window in a slightly hazy distance there is a dirt parking lot, a meadow and some barren trees visible through the interstices of the buds. the focus is on the play of sunlight on the buds and their slowly unfolding vein pattern…

47 kWh generation today, another new record by a significant margin (previous was 36.3 on the 27th).
Max array output around 8.3 kW with a 15-minute averaging window.
Monthly total consumption (not counting the last few hours of today) 5 MWh, 730 kWh production - about 15% of my consumption which is pretty decent given how much juice I use.
YTD consumption is 11.4 MWh with 1.3 of production, meeting 11% of my demand.
Consumption should go down slightly in the warmer w…

Two key things prompted previous U.S, presidents to opt for diplomacy over war with Iran:
the bloody violence certain to follow
and the stranglehold Iran has on the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps spent decades developing weapons and military capabilities aimed at halting commercial traffic in the strait in the time of crisis.
