Open source has become critical digital infrastructure over the past 25 years, but its future depends on human resilience as much as code. Contributor burnout, funding gaps, and new regulations are real challenges, and Ruth has spent nearly two decades at the heart of open source communities working through exactly these kinds of problems. It's a session to look forward to!

I see that a certain Polish supermarket is selling "cocoa bars" now.
I wonder if the regulations changed, or if the quality went so downhill they that are no longer allowed to call it "chocolate" according to the old regulations.

Inside the Trump administration’s rapid rollback of gun regulations
An ATF proposal would allow people to buy guns even if they have been deemed unfit to handle Social Security or Veterans benefits,
with officials saying that someone being deemed incompetent to handle their finances does not mean that they cannot responsibly handle firearms.
The proposal would also clarify that people who are involuntarily committed to a mental health institution would be barred from own…
The moral integrity of a Louisiana Senator on stark display. Hey, if he's making a fortune, it must be beneficial, right? That's why we need to reduce or eliminate regulations, we must allow law-makers to invest in specific companies, we need to focus on fraud in the world of the lowest income populations, rather than worry about a few fiddles by the "important" people.

Is anyone out there having to deal with new EU regulations/directives that require online stores to provide a no-questions-asked 14 day sale cancellation (and return)?
Our company (in California) has a small online store. We do have buyers of test products - physical, tangible, products - in the EU.
It would be crazy for us to do this 14 day thing - not only would a working store website have to be changed, but financially we could not recognize revenue for at least half a month…
The "Handbook of Upper Canadian Chronology" is simultaneously the most boringly titled book - though accurate, it's a super boring book - and one of the most useful for my current project. It's basically just a list of officeholders, regulations, laws, geographical divisions, etc., etc. But gloriously helpful. Thank you to my forebear, the historian Frederick H. Armstrong, for making the lives of the handful of us who work on early 19th-century Ontario so much easier.
I did not know this, but it makes sense: When you send a parcel, put name and address of both sender and addressee both outside and *inside* the parcel. So say the Universal Postal Union regulations:
"The office of posting shall also advise the sender to put in the parcel a copy of his address and that of the addressee."

#MastodonPoll: Which of the following regulations regarding leaf blowers would you support? Choose as many as you like.
1. Decibel limits
2. Fuel efficiency standards (the relevant metric for cars is miles per gallon, so the corresponding one here would be what, leaves blown per gallon?)
3. Fuel type restrictions (i.e. ban gas-powered ones completely)
4. Full ban, both gas-powered ones and electric

The Office of Management and Budget (#OMB) proposed regulation changes would give political appointees complete control over federal grants, from vetting to termination at any point for any reason, and that's just the beginning. I’s critical that as many public comments are submitted as possible by the July 13th deadline:

“Aboriginal rights in Canadian law do not give Indigenous people rights — they merely recognize Crown obligations.” Indigenous people have inherent rights that are fundamental to treaty, human and constitutional rights.
We have a chance to do things right in Canada. Let’s put aside the fearmongering, push back against the pushback and continue our journey forward together.

A large amount of future development plans, generally but especially in AI, is illusory. A speculative hedge. There are plenty of practical and economic reasons to believe that Stargate UK wouldn't go ahead, and "regulations" is the most face-saving public explaination.
But I'm not convinced that shouting about …

Also, 0 days since someone claimed that I'm wrong to blame free-market capitalism, because obviously all you need is regulation.
My dear brother in myself, the whole point of free-market capitalism is that it's supposed to regulate itself. People just do what's in their own self-interest, and market mechanisms eventually make everything right and everyone benefits.
If you need governments to lean over backwards setting up regulations (and constantly closing up loopholes) in order to prevent capitalists from devouring everyone and the free market from collapsing upon itself, then you're not saying that free market capitalism works. You're proving the exact opposite: that it doesn't work.

it is “getting out of the business of regulating wetlands.”
