Google has one enormous advantage over all other AI players in the industry. It can offer "AI-modus" to the billions of people already using Google Search. And yes, AI-modus can be bad, full of faults, but it improves and gets better. For many questions it is "good enough" probably. Also it is just one-click away for most people on a site they already visit regularly. This way Google will create another unhealthy market dominance i am afraid.

I've spent most of today -- while I really should have been working on other things -- building a little search engine for @yogthos' Cryogen blogging engine, which is what I use for my blog.
I can now generate an index very fast; the index I'm currently generating is too big, and doesn't have enough metadata, and consequently the search side can't return that metadata, but I'm very pleased with progress for one day.

I love how Fediverse apps like #Peertube and Mastodon are connected and you can like videos from Mastodon. However, the user experience sucks. If I'm on a Peertube page I need to have an account on that server to be able to like videos.
To avoid that, I need to paste the Peertube URL into Mastodon's search to see the video's post and I can like it from there.

Yesterday, I observed a friend trying to show me something he saw on facebook recently. Every single search he tried resulted in first switching from facebook to “Meta”—whatever that is—without him noticing for quite some interactions, the search field was still there. Sending a query always opened the Meta AI answering the assumed question (but he was actually sending a query as he was looking for an image). He got angry, I got amused. He found the image eventually, but what a wacky UI!

I just spent ~20 minutes trying to find information on how to do something in a Golang library on my client computer, before I decided it was worth pulling up @… on my personal computer to look it up instead.
Immediately found the answer I needed to get me moving.
We don’t need “vibe coding”, we need search engines that actually work.

turn it on its side. underneath, near the rear wheels, there are several wires. one pair of wires goes to a small cylinder which is the beeper. you can't see it easily, but you can touch it easily, and you can feel it vibrate when the scooter beeps.
detach that pair of wires. cutting them is ok, it won't affect anything else.

@… I haven’t convinced my employer to pay yet, but I added my personal Kagi account as the default search engine on my work laptop as well.
Finding SIGNIFICANTLY more useful results for programming problems that come up during the day than I did before.

I figure even if it is someday possible for the transhumanists to upload themselves into a machine, it will be a nightmare attempting to later transplant themselves into the new improved updated wow machine that will someday replace it!
Folks who balk about Mastodon not letting you migrate your entire presence elsewhere likely have never tried to extricate their personal workflow from a 15 year old laptop! 😅

Yes, I have contemplated installing Emacs and nothing else. Would seem the only sensible thing to do, but 'sensible' was never listed on my report card.
