So, here's where we're at:
Trump said Thursday that he’s thinking of staging a UFC match on the White House grounds with upwards 20,000 spectators to celebrate 250 years of American independence.
“We have a lot of land there,” said Trump, a UFC enthusiast who has attended several of its mixed martial arts matches in recent months and is close friends with Dana White, the league’s president.
Trump announced his plan in Iowa during the kickoff for a year’s worth of fest…

masks at protests / demographics
Interestingly, at the May Day gathering I was the only one in a mask.
Thinking about the contrast with the trans protest the other week, where "good" (fitted not floppy) masks were dotted about throughout the crowd, and felt normalised.
Today's march was a less crowded event than the trans protest, so pretty low-risk for covid transmission anyway. But then when we got to the mini-fair after the march, indoors at the Friends' Meeting House, I didn't see anyone masking indoors either.
I wonder about the demographics of that difference. Seems like there's a traditional union/Labour left who share the mainstream denial of present-day covid, and a statistically more disabled & marginalised cohort where trans awareness and disability/illness awareness overlap.

A good counter-explanation from @…, although it’s not entirely consistent with the data: if this were merely aging vehicles, we’d expect to see a slow, steady decline. But we don’t; we see a •very• sharp turnaround that coincides precisely with Musk’s fascism entering full public view, and not with any sort of sudden aging event in the vehicles.
But yes, surely normal depreciation is a contributing factor as well.

it’s a lonely free lunch wednesday at the systems lab #alas

An overhead view of a variety of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern-style dishes arranged in aluminum trays on a large conference table. The food appears to include:

	•	Pita bread slices
	•	A creamy orange curry or stew (possibly butter chicken or chicken tikka masala)
	•	A tray of baklava (dessert)
	•	Grilled vegetables with skewered chicken or paneer
	•	Shredded rice pilaf or biryani with saffron and dried fruit
	•	Grilled koobideh or kebab meat
	•	A tray of a saucy spinach and rice dish (possi…
A wider-angle view of the same room, now showing the full table setup. The food is laid out on one side of the long conference table. Most chairs are empty, but one plate has been served and placed on the near end of the table next to a water bottle and plastic utensils. The plate includes pita, salad, a kebab, and vegetables. Large windows line the room, giving it a bright, open feel. The setup suggests a casual group lunch, perhaps for a meeting or team event.

The barbarian role of cultural demolition crew is especially important when you consider how often cultural reconstruction is needed. Many of Rome’s glaring defects — exploitation, authoritarianism, corrupt self-aggrandizement — flow from deeply human tendencies. Time and again they’ve transformed promising civilizations into decaying, oppressive monstrosities. Time and again, history seems to cry out: Bring on the demolition crew! And time and again barbarians cheerfully respond to the call. Their previous massive wreaking of destruction, near the end of the second millennium B.C., had come after civilization went through centuries of apparent ossification.
In a way, barbarians are just a special case of that general and potent zero-sum dynamic in cultural evolution: brutal competition among neighboring societies. This rivalry renders ossified cultures vulnerable to a makeover, minor or major. They may be taken over by a vast neighboring civilization, which will revamp them in its image. Or they may be infiltrated and perhaps even disassembled by barbarians, paving the way for future reassembly. Or they may revive and prevail — an example of the “challenge and response” dynamic stressed by Arnold Toynbee. In any event, the point remains the same: however deeply human the tendencies of exploitation, authoritarianism, and self-aggrandizement, cultures that surrender to them may not be long for this world.
"""
(Robert Wright, Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny)
Is it time for the barbarians now? Or perhaps we — here on Fedi — are the barbarians.

…In other words, you're saying that the patch is buggy because it drops the __read_mostly attribute (which places the data in a different section).

That's a good reminder of how untrustworthy LLMs still are. Even for such a simple patch, the LLM was still able to make a subtle mistake.

To be fair, a human could definitely make the same mistake. And whatever humans revie…

The catering for dinner at the Weeffabriek for the #tdose event were kind of confused/taken by surprise when I asked for the #vegan options. IIRC there should have been at leat one other vegan?

Two-time Georgia gubernatorial candidate and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams spoke at the event,
denouncing efforts by the Trump administration to strip the names of activists from Navy vessels, including possibly Medgar Evers.
“They want to take his name off a boat because they don’t want us to have a reminder of how far he sailed us forward,” Abrams told the conference crowd.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has undertaken an effort to change the names of ships a…

I also see that the FFOTUS Imperial parade is being designated a "National Security Event", meaning they expect an elevated risk of terrorist events.
From whom? I suspect foreign interests, like neo-ISIS, are quite happy with the way that FFOTUS is dis-assembling the US - Bin Laden must be quite proud of what FFOTUS Musk miller/noem ... are doing to the USA. So why would they bother attacking this silly (and expensive) parade that makes the US look like it is doing a spin-o…

To my local peeps in #Georgia, US. The wife and I went to this last night and it was AMAZING. They only have one more weekend this year, but they will be back next year. Impressive production value, world class performers and artists. The guy operating the dragon is from Jim Henson studios (and worked with Henson back in the day). I can't say enough good things about this.

I just updated the prints on my office door to reflect the kind of photos (particularly event photos) that I am taking now -- as well the the new system which supersedes "three sided cards" that attains better branding in every respect except that it doesn't have a name (yet) #photo #photography

Four prints stuck directly onto a brownish-grey door, all landscape oriented and slightly cut down from letter-sized paper. From top to bottom:

Daffodils in from of a CORNELL sign

Five cosplayers with white jackets over muted color dresses with dark socks of varying lengths and bow ties on grassy lawn in front of sakura tree

20 or so people wearing denim jackets in front of variously dyed fabric panels

A large pack of runners running away from me

The design of the museum has morphed over the years, from a dark, curvaceous amoeba-like form that echoed the nearby La Brea Tar Pits to a design that retains the curves up top but shifts to rectilinear glass on the galleries level below
After five years of construction, so much debate about its scale, design and ambitions, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art held its first event Thursday night inside the Peter Zumthor-designed building
