Here’s the lightning sketch of Paul’s Treatise Against Efficiency that I’ve never written:
1. Efficiency is asymptotically inefficient: as costs approach zero, the cost of further reducing them approaches infinity.
2. Efficiency prioritizes the measurable over the difficult-to-measure.
3. Efficiency prioritizes what those in power see (or imagine) over on-the-ground reality.
4. Following from 2 and 3, efficiency reduces the amount and quality of information flowing into a human system.
5. Efficiency foments institutional inflexibility.
6. By removing slack, efficiency causes small failures to cascade more readily and increases the risk of catastrophic failure.
7. Following rom 4, 5, and 6, efficiency trades small costs for massive risks: from failures, from missed opportunities, and from inability to adjust.
8. Efficiency, when pushed, strangles the emergent phenomena that in the long term create all new things of value.
9. Thus, although it can be a by-product of evolution, efficiency as a goal in itself strangles evolution.
10. Efficiency as a goal strangles joy.

A few pictures from yesterday night at the #39C3
(License: CC BY-SA 4.0)

A dimly lit large room with some round and square tables. All sorts of light installations re cluttered on the table and in the room: LEDs on strings hanging from the ceiling that form a cylinder on one table, colorful LED stripes and theater lights in the background. The desks are filled with electronic equipment like 3D printers, laptops, power outlets and alike.
A large dimly lit hall with a big rocket ("Fairy Dust") in the front. A toroid-like shape with mirrors like a disco ball is hanging from the ceiling surrounded by several large rings. Powerful light beams shine through sparse fog and the reflections of the toroid mirrors are projected onto the walls. Stairways are decorated with several banners ("OpenWrt", "Trans right are human rights", "Amnesty International" etc.)
A white van with the medical cross logo from Cadus is lit with colorful red/orange/violet lights and medical/technical gear (flight cases, pumps etc.) is on display around the van. In the background blurry light dots and more colorful light is visible in a dimly lit hall.
A hallway in a dimly lit large hall is surrounded by decorated walls. Posters from the 39C3 motto ("Power Cycles") are hung up on the walls, others are decorated with fluorescent tape that shines in neon colors in the blueish/violet UV light. More LED stripes and some spotlights create a colorful atmosphere.

60 years ago tonight, the merry pranksters' first informal acid test, held at ken babbs's place outside santa cruz, where the grateful dead did not play (& all purported flyers are almost certainly fake). below text from dennis mcnally's bio & i wrote about it for the 50th.

Babbs’s place in Soquel, near Santa Cruz, on the coast south
of Palo Alto, on November 27, 1965. Such public notice as
there was of the event came through a posting at Lee Quarn-
strom and Peter Dema’s Hip Pocket Bookstore in Soquel. The
Pranksters were joined by Allen Ginsberg and his lover, Peter
Orlovsky, and Garcia, Lesh, Weir, Sue Swanson, and Connie

Kesey didn’t want to give it up, but Phil was not dissuaded,
and learned one of his early lessons in the subtleties of trip-
ping. He proceeded to gluehiseyesonKesey, and in a while
Ken got up and shoved the guitar at him. “Here.” Weir, on
the other hand, had another sort of adventure. Although he
had read “Howl,” he did not recognize Allen Ginsberg, and
saw only that he “was pretty damned amazing, the stuff he
would say and do. So I figure, okay, I'm gonna sit next to this
guy. Which was okay …

Donald Trump followed through on his threats to sue the BBC over its editing of his remarks on Jan. 6, 2021, for a documentary.
The following can be attributed to Seth Stern, director of advocacy at Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF):
“If any ordinary person filed as many frivolous multibillion-dollar lawsuits as Donald Trump, they’d be sanctioned and placed on a restricted filers list.
By my count, Trump has demanded at least $65 billion in damages from media outlets i…

Underlings are so annoying!
Sometimes you can make this problem go away by exploiting weak labor power (see: factories, agriculture, sanitation).
Sometimes you can create a toxic org culture when information •only• flows down the hierarchy, so no pushback can ever reach your sensitive ears. (Public school administrations are rife with this.)
Sometimes you can do it by making your catastrophic failures look like a string of successes to the people up the chain. (Large corporations are swimming in this.)

We are going to open all of these presents RIGHT NOW!

This photo shows a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in a modern home with exposed brick walls and hardwood floors. The tree is a full, natural-looking evergreen adorned with warm white string lights that create a soft, inviting glow throughout its branches.

The tree features a mix of ornaments including a gold star topper, colorful glass baubles (red, blue, and other colors), and elegant decorative pieces like white origami-style ornaments and angel figures. The decorating style is eclecti…
