Good Morning #Canada
I hope you're waking up to a scrumptious smell from the kitchen because it's National Bacon Day. While you're waiting for it to finish cooking, here are some facts to salivate over:
- Canadian Bacon, aka Back Bacon or Peameal Bacon, is a Canadian invention. It's also healthier than regular bacon, with far less saturated fats
- 42% of Canadians prefer their bacon crispy while 49% enjoy it limp. I assume 9% eat it raw?
- Winnipeg, home of the Bacon Centre of Excellence, is the Bacon Capital of Canada
- Canadians consume over 50M kilos of bacon annually. I ate my 1.25 kilos this year.
- Canadian Bacon, the movie, was a box office flop, only earning $178K on a production budget of $11M
- The average weight of a pig prior to processing is 111.2 kilos
- Canadian producers exported 18.6M kilos of cured bacon and 202K kilos of back bacon
- There are over 14M hogs in Canada
- 82% of Canadians add bacon on their burgers
- Kevin Bacon is not Canadian

Screenshot of a section of the thi.ng/units package readme giving an overview of the new formula DSL provided. The included code examples show how to:

- compute weight in grams of A4 paper with 320 grams per square meter
- compute weight in kg of 1/2 inch thick 200x300mm glass plate
- same as previous but using the `glass` density preset

Re this post from @…:
It •is• overwhelming, and none of us can or should take on all the pain of the world. We can’t carry all that weight ourselves; we can’t fix it by carrying it.
It is essential that we all continue to make music, cook tasty food, post cat videos, do the daily mundane things, nerd out, laugh with the people close to us, all that.
We just need to hold space to remember that there is suffering in the world too. We do not turn away; we live in defiance of it.

Content warning: open source whinging

Ugh why is this always the way. I evaluated like 25 authentication servers for a small scale web project — I do want to support things like OIDC and Passkeys, so this is not something I really want to make myself like the old days of “use crypt() on the passwords and just make a simple database”.
5 of them are just dev mode garbage that will never see the light of day as a thing people use.
2 of them are home network nonsense for people who want enterprise login for their family, but where One Nerd controls the whole user-list.
15 of them are freemium "open source" where they withhold features for their enterprise tier and make them so unfortunately difficult to deploy, all requiring postgresql databases and a complex containerization setup and helm charts and oh so much.
and then there's kanidm, which is great except its opinions make it completely unusable for a community project, it's really more trying to fit the ‘enterprise unix authentication' space. Kudos to them for communicating it but it's the wrong tool, even if it is really good.
And then there's rauthy. Which is exactly what I want, well built and delightful, uses a lightweight embedded database, and even has a peer-to-peer sync for scalability. But customizing it is going to be a lesson in building it from source repeatedly, and its configuration is just a bit strange, and its frontend is extremely Backend Developer Wrote A Web UI. I guess I got a second project. And maybe a third to make debian packages of it.
Yet it really is the best of the options _by far_.
NLNet supported projects continue to punch above their weight class.

Eli Lilly, the maker of hugely popular weight loss drugs, has reached $1 trillion in value, becoming the first publicly traded company in health care to hit the milestone.
The second-most valuable health care company, Johnson & Johnson, is worth about half a trillion dollars.
Lilly’s stock has surged in large part because of the company’s success in seizing the biggest potential market in the history of the drug industry:
the class of weight loss medicines known as GLP-1…

My "grow plants everywhere" mod for #Luanti is progressing!
I just built a routine to do blobby weight regions as the intersection of a bunch of parabolas, where weight increases logarithmically from the edge of the parabola with an adjustable edge region, and we use the geometric average of these weight values within the intersection region. Then I spent a few hours hunched over a biomes vornoi diagram approximating different broad regions like "arid_grasses" and "temperate_trees" so you can just name some combination of these regions (with custom per-region multipliers) and have your plant definition apply within those regions. I was using rectangular min/max heat/humidity values before, but they were pretty awkward to work with.
If anyone on here who plays Luanti wants to check it out let me know and I can prioritize publishing what I've got. I've got growth definitions for most but not all VoxeLibre plants and it wouldn't be hard to put them together for another game. No trees yet, but that's pretty much the next thing to work on.

Anybody have recommendations for a solidly built duffel/gym bag that's going to last a long time? I typically see cloth tears as a secondary failure mode and zippers going bad as the primary problem.
Weight is not a consideration, this is for a car breakdown/emergency kit so it's gonna sit in the back of the car holding jumper cables, a first aid kit, some snacks and water bottles, etc. for years and hopefully not be used too often.
