Abstract: Microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) have proven to be a versatile detector technology and are very promising for several applications in medical imaging. Deep imaging into human tissues often requires detectors with low background noise, high detection efficiency, broad wavelength sensitivity or single-pixel energy resolution. MKIDs offer a unique combination of valuable features for medical imaging but have so far not been discussed much for modern medical instrumentation. This represents an exciting opportunity to investigate the potentially powerful advantages MKIDs could offer for clinical studies in several areas. The most promising fields for MKIDs in medical imaging include fluorescence microscopy, near-infrared spectroscopy, energy-resolved medical X-ray imaging and synchrotron X-ray microscopy. We present the respective advantages MKIDs offer for these fields and compare them to current detector state-of-the-art.

Abstract: Inverse rendering is traditionally solved via differentiable renderers and gradient descent, which requires substantial problem-specific engineering and is prone to getting stuck in local minima due to ambiguities. Derivative-free approaches alleviate engineering requirements, but often heavily depend on a good problem initialization. In this work, we propose Feature-Informed Diffusion Evolution (FIDE), a fully black-box framework that requires no gradients or specific initialization: the renderer is treated as an opaque function whose only requirement is to produce images. Our key insight is feature guiding: rather than reducing each candidate rendering to a scalar loss value, we use a Vision Transformer (ViT) to extract dense visual features from it. We subsequently use these features to train a diffusion-based candidate proposal model, allowing the network to use visual cues to predict parameters that would match the target image. The candidate solutions proposed by this diffusion model are then refined in a closed loop with a CMA evolution strategy, continuously narrowing the proposal region as optimization progresses. We validate across diverse inverse problems from path tracing, vector splines, Voronoi shaders, and robotics, and demonstrate that feature-guiding substantially improves convergence over scalar-loss baselines and reliably escapes local minima where gradient-based methods stall.

Abstract: We describe a model of perceptual inference in primary visual cortex (V1) equivalent to a minimal diffusion model whose function can be readily understood from its parameters. The model is based on sparse coding with a non-factorial prior over latent variables in the form of an unconstrained, pairwise interaction matrix, extending standard sparse coding inference to a general recurrent dynamical system. We efficiently train these recurrent dynamics using a denoising score-matching objective and implicit differentiation. After training on natural images, the learned interaction matrix mirrors the structure of horizontal connections in superficial layers of V1 that link neurons of similar orientation tuning. This model exhibits exceptionally good denoising performance, restoring image features such as extended contours amid extreme visual ambiguity, nearly matching the behavior of standard, black-box diffusion architectures in generalization regime. Owing to the model's simplicity, the network's Jacobian can be decomposed directly in terms of the interaction matrix between latent variables, revealing mechanistically how the recurrent dynamics assign high probability over a continuous family of natural structural deformations. Intriguingly, within this circuit, a large fraction of latent variables learn to disconnect from visual input altogether, essentially forming a hierarchical representation that appears to enforce global consistency among image features. Together, the model and results bridge two distinct domains: for neuroscience, it generates concrete, testable hypotheses regarding functional connectivity in recurrent neural circuits during perceptual inference tasks; for machine learning, it elucidates the internal mechanisms learned by diffusion models that allow them to generate infinitely many novel images from a finite training set.

I mean, consider the Finder. It was a critical piece of OS9 and prior systems. It was intrinsic to the OS. It is now pretty much just another app, albeit one with a lot of features that really drive other software.

The event readout rate is 32 kHz, with the digitization done by an off-chip Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC).
Simulations predict a 4.0 GHz analog input bandwidth and 20 mW per channel during sampling; the 10.24 GHz PLL has a predicted jitter of 550 fs RMS at 15.7 mW. The paper describes the sampling architecture, chip signal paths, PLL design, and presents simulation results.
