I've been using git so long but somehow missed the -I (uppercase "i") option to ignore lines matching something. Blogged it so I'll remember how to do it next time I need it #thatsWhatBlogsAreFor

Looking for some brand new #ProgRock / #Metal? A close friend has just managed to put out their band's first track 🤘 And I say "managed" for good reason: the whole band are scientists, spread across multiple countries, so the recording process has been hectic 😅 Still, production is genuinely impressive, and its just a whole lot of fun. Give it a listen! #NewMusic

Very interesting read about design inheritance, the involuntary psychological toll that comes with it, and what it takes to deliberately design against it.

This change in the token window arrangements from Claude is great! I always leave work on time now, because I've always run out of tokens and the end of the day is when I most need the second opinion! Pretty sure I'm actually getting more done by bailing on time and having something to immediately pick up next morning

Might sound really geeky but I just managed to syndicate my indiekit/Cloudron tutorial to https://news.indieweb.org by just selecting a syndication target from the indiekit UI backend, still a few things to iron out but I can now select from two “Indienews” targets for either French or English section of the news ag…

@alineblankertz@indieweb.social "We want ... hack and shut down ... Big Tech".

What's that? I've published a new article on my website?
All other writing has been on hold until I finished it, but my data review of 2025 is finally done 😅 🎉
I have absolutely no idea if it will be of interest to anyone else, but I love these posts. And this year's was using **even more** of my own, home-grown data, captured directly via the very site it now lives on 😁

I've been in my career long enough that there are some things that I used to be exceptional at that I literally have no idea about now. It will never not be hilarious to me how long it takes me to debug any LAMP stack problem now - but I once taught some of the people who lead and maintain these things today.
(Cloudflare rules were obscuring a problem that Wordpress hid the error message of and tl;dr Apache uses an older version of PHP which was missing the XML extension. Got there eventually!)
A lot of my thoughts and personal perspective was shared on Twitter; now the online dumpster fire and harassment tool X.

The problem with relying on commercial services for hosting any of your blog content is that they may only be around 10 or 15 years.
My blog has been around for 29 years and every now and then I need to fix up a bunch of posts from a decade ago because some service shut down.
My personal site (paid for by doing side jobs for people) has outlasted corporations with VC backing and overpaid CEOs who failed.
Looking back at January, I am watching **way too much** YouTube, particularly Shorts 😬 I also haven't touched my feed reader in *months*!
Let's see what happens in Feb if I delete the YouTube app on my phone, and reorder my apps so that Reader is where it was 🤞

My indiekit fork is now able to Send & Receive webmentions automatically, no human interventions, all I need is to use the /microsub/reader endpoint via Indiepass or via my own blog and whatever I like, repost or bookmarks gets “magically” sent to the source URL I interacted with. Code is here h…
I know git doesn't track renames. I know it constructs them from adds and deletes. I know my repo has lots of similar (not identical!) boilerplate files ... I still renamed a bunch of directories and was surprised that merging this change into existing feature branches produced phantom changes that existed on neither branch!!
Here's the blog post: https://lornajane.net/posts/2026/git-renames-are-not-renames

Delighted to have managed to get myself to #Monkigras this year! I have only done one previous Monkigras event and it was life changing, so who knows what this year will bring!
Thank you @… for the "deleted files" feature! I keep things in my Nextcloud that aren't under source control - mostly write-once content things like conference talks, notes folders, etc. And I just deleted the wrong filename pattern .... oops!
If you don't know NextCloud, it's the self-hosted Dropbox alternative. And when I say self-hosted, actually I'm using it as-as-service from the excellent humans over at @… . So it's more like "choice-hosted" or something

After the recent #IWD this seems like the right time to share this excellent article about AI and ick, written for women and articulating some of the things we're experiencing with this shift #linkTuesday
This week's career limiting accessibility regression from @… is to not show comments in pull request diff any more. There's a separate comment panel which you can look at (but not at the same time as the diff) where there are indications of content replies but these cannot be interacted with using standard accessibility tools.
I review very long pull requests for work and as a volunteer maintainer and I am not sure why we're okay with this constant march of degraded experience. #a11y

Pretty sure my best use of AI today was Claude being an excellent rubber duck. I started typing quite a long question and by the time I got to the end I had a hunch about how to debug and didn't need to press send. Funny how that works!
RE: #CitySpace, Zane Vela would tell the kids, "If someone offers you a virtual space, ask how you can contribute, and if they say you can't, walk away."
Anyway, I reported it here if anyone wants to follow along or join in https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/186966
I'm a keyboard-only user using vimium, I think I can still pull every branch locally and use vscode or gh cli to see the comments? Much slower though and doesn't really work in a review meeting. I'm happy to have suggested workarounds if anyone has any (they broke the plus button for commenting some months ago, it's all just very difficult now)
Just realised that I'm so far behind with processing my Zettelkasten inbox that the week numbering system I use is in danger of looping ... On the plus side that does mean I'm reading and writing again after what feels like too long.
Funny how you can sometimes feel "fine" but your executive function tells a different story, for me it shows up in unprocessed things (inbox, notes, photos, and laundry!)
I am greatly amused to see it's time for some announcements about funding for trains in the north again. No need for actual trains or anything, the announcements are the only thing running to timetable.
Easily the most frustrating thing about moving into a technical architect role mid career is that I'm absolutely hopeless at diagrams. I've been a remote, disabled worker for more than a decade, I can't draw digitally and there is nobody to whiteboard for. Even when my body still worked I drew at a standard that introduced uncertainty to circuit diagrams. It's a necessary skill and I'm working on it but it's a painful gap in the toolbox and will be for quite some time.
Oh this really was fun, Scalar's interactive API docs on a FastAPI deployment is making me wonder if we should just use this for the workshop rather than trying to switch people over to use the Postman collection I made (also it's an Enterprise audience, and I already know that some of my attendees are not allowed to use Postman).
I enjoy LLMs the most when they are augmenting my existing skillset. I've lost count of how many demo APIs I've built with FastAPI for workshops but Claude built this one, configured it for deployment to Railway (a first for me), wrote the mildly amusing sample data I wanted, and switched to Scalar for docs with no fuss.
While I carry on with content I actually wanted to cover without getting bogged down in the details of the demo that's only there to let the attendees try some skills!
Pretty sure Claude is just flattering me at this point. Asked for some further reading on a topic and was presented with things that were mostly published by me ... I know this is my specialist topic (API developer experience) but really??
