I think there’s a real possibility that local, running on consumer electronic devices, generative AI without the need for expensive processors, data centers, massive amounts of water and electricity may well be the actual long term way forward for generative AIs like LLM, image and video generators.

Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT run on expensive chips in data centers, consuming lots of electricity and generating lots of heat.
I just tested an LLM on my iPhone, totally offline, running on its battery with room air cooling it.
Surprisingly, results were good, despite iPhone processors not being designed for LLMs.
This local AI approach has promise for certain things, without the boiling the ocean and using a city’s worth of power.

AI didn't create skewed workplace incentives. They were already aligned towards churning out artifacts to create the illusion of productivity.
Of course, if there is one thing AI is good at, it's making plausible-looking artifacts. Then those artifacts get passed on and become your problem.
HBR is calling this the workslop era.
We must kill the logic underlying workslop: that anything going wrong after a handoff can be blamed on execution problems.

Derrick Ross from Shakespeare reckons there open web is in trouble because you got to be a dev to build a website.
He seems to think his app Shakespeare can make it easier to make a web app by using ai 😕
"Build me a Twitter like website" is the kind of instruction he thinks it will handle.
A local app running on your own machine, though calling the big ai model apis. Including if you have the power at home to run deep seek or open models.
I find myself suspecting it'd be hard for vibe coders who aren't devs to tell if they had vibe coded buggy insecure software or not.

I made the familiar point yesterday during a panel discussion that even if AI were approaching human intelligence, we're nowhere near human power efficiency (in "intelligence per watt")
But is that actually true anymore? We need huge power to train models, but once we have them trained, distilled and quantized, what do we have?
The human brain draws abt 20 Watts. An M4 doing local inference on a heavily quantized LLM won't draw more than 40 Watts.
