So very much this: Even if you think AI is net-positive, we have a duty to expand well, not on top of the most marginalized as always.
The way we do it now is the way of paving natural beauty, discarding entire communities, and taking what is often limited resources from those who need them to live.
It is possible to build data centers that do not have these problems. It is possible to power with solar, to cool with a refrigeration cycle instead of evaporating water.
It just costs more energy. And therefore is only viable if we invest in solar, heavily, and require it.
One of the fundamental tenets embedded in capitalism is that if you can't represent it in the market, it doesn't have to be taken into account. Community and ways of life are those things.

Energy efficiency is a cost savings. The real scam is the #47 administration's ideological opposition to any that reduces consumption of energy.
We have benefited in many ways from the new building codes and appliance efficiency standards: lower utility bills & safer buildings for occupants, not wasting scarce resources such as water reduces costs as well.
(And of course, the related environmental benefits)

Sometimes I get frustrated with the conversations around communism/socialism/capitalism. Did communism in the USSR work? No, because it concentrated all the resources with a privileged group that became corrupt. Did socialism work as practiced in many countries? Not if it concentrated all the resources with a privileged group.
Does capitalism work? Sometimes. If it's counterbalanced with regulation and social safety nets. Otherwise, capitalism runs into the same problems as socialism/communism. Market forces concentrate wealth with a privileged class that becomes corrupted. Because power corrupts. Even if that power belongs to a privileged group rather than one despotic ruler. When discussing scientific achievements made mostly or partly by AI systems, especially the headline-making ones, it's good to think about the resources being allotted to such projects, which are plausibly incomparable to previous investment. For instance, I suspect that no one had previously invested several millions of dollars to hire a team of mathematicians exclusively to tackle a single millennium problem.

"The thing that concerns me most is violence, the use of force and the threat or the implementation of damage to enforce an opinion. As I said at the beginning, I'm a scientist. I relish facts.
