Turned the Steam Machine to the beta stream, deleted all network config, turned a "Force Supplicant" mode off. Dunno what turned it on.
Lots of rebooting and retrying and re-configuring.
Was hoping this machine/VR-headset might be something I could recommend to non-techy family but this is far too shoddy.
I have successfully used the dongle to stream No Man's Sky a couple of times, and it seems to reboot now into a working state.
It's not really massively better than just streaming over the normal house wifi where the repeater is in line-of-sight anyway. Weird seeing mpeg compression artifacts in your peripheral vision isn't it.
Seems to crash within 30 minutes or so of No Man's Sky play so far. Might be the game's fault rather than the streaming combinations. Stays crashed somehow even after alt-f4 closing it. Have to reboot.
Anyway. Process but still feels shonky and no way I can recommend this to newbies or the less technically proficient.
Battery needs a recharge now anyway.

@hacksilon@infosec.exchangeUpdate on the #homeassistant restore - everything worked almost perfectly. Three gotchas I found so far:
- The “restoring” page would just keep displaying, since after the restore, the service no longer responded to homeassistant.local. Luckily I saw my soundbar turn on, which is always a good indicator that HA rebooted.
- The backup seemingly did not contain the sound files I had uploaded, so my improvised temporary doorbell is borked until I upload a new sound file.
- The most interesting one: The zigbee devices did not reconnect initially, except for a single one, and the reason was interesting - I learned something new about Zigbee today.
Apparently Zigbee has a frame counter, and the devices will remember the last frame counter they observed, and refuse messages with a lower count afterwards. The backup contained stale frame counters, since the machine died several hours after the last backup, hence, all devices were refusing messages from the coordinator. The solution was to power-cycle all mains-powered devices. The battery-powered devices came back automatically after that, except for two buttons which I had to re-pair manually. Credits to Claude for figuring this out based on the logs.
Other than that, quite happy with the “restore from backup” on Home Assistant for now. Now I only need to reconfigure my two wall tablets to point to the new local home assistant URL, as the RPi has a different hostname on my network now, and the wall tablets used the local alias of the old machine for the connection, as I did not want to route them via the internet ingress through Nabu Casa. But that’s not the fault of the backup, that’s just me configuring my stuff weird.

It shows to me how easy it is to develop a relationship to these voices I listen to, and reminds me that I need to continue to question my media and ensure I get my news from a variety of sources keeping an active and critical assessment of where they're getting their facts from going in my mind.

Finally, that thing isn't running of the portable games console, and is capable of doing actual work.
Haven't spent much time with Arch or KDE before, let alone this SteamOS variant in particular.

The work I got done is entirely just configuring this machine though 😆
Here's the bash script I now have which I can copy to a new steam machine, and maybe any Arch / KDE machine, to install Vim and set up keyboard shortcuts so you can move the windows around with ctrl-alt-J and the keys around that on the keyboard. Nine shortcuts for nine sides/corners/center.
