Health Stuff

Recovered somewhat from whatever that weird fit was at the end of last year.

NHS still has me on some sort of list I think, appointment might turn up next year. Last contact with them they were suggesting maybe November.
But the private treatment gave me the
MRI which
showed nothing weird and post-fit symptoms have been reducing.
Experimented with eating meat to see if that helped.
Tried eating meat for a month to see if it reduced the post-fit symptoms. Maybe it did? Tried vegetarian again and maybe it got worse?
Hard to tell with intermittent symptoms and a terrible memory.
Decided it's more likely to do good than harm (to me, entirely harm to the animals obviously), and eat meat till the end of the year.
While I'm better, I don't really feel fully recovered enough to want to change things so more meat next year I think.
One of those symptoms is that booze tolerance dropped to like zero. Very rarely had more than four pints in a day this year and very rarely more than one night a
week.
Much high number than the target there really.
Tripped over a guy-rope and fell onto the wrist.
Did two days of the festival and the drive home thinking it almost certainly wasn't broken and only confirmed it was when I got home and the hospital put it in a cast.

Hallowe'en, it's such a joyful celebration.

Three very strangely dressed people, all wearing weird hats. They look like either magicians or aliens. They are outside in a natural area.
This colour image has been around for quite a number of years, an early type of computer-assisted image by an artist who works consistently with strange, haunting figures, often wearing tribal-like costumes.

Any sufficiently advanced disaster preparedness is indistinguishable from revolutionary dual power. This essay is a bit of a transition between the theory I've written earlier, and more concrete plans.
Even though I only touched on my life on the commune, it was hard not to write more. These are such weird spaces, with so much invisible opportunity. But they're also just so unique and special. For all the stress and uncertainty of making sure you stayed on Lorean's (the head priestess), there were also those long summer nights with the whole community (except the old lady) gathered around a fire, talking and drinking. There was almost a child-like play to the whole time.
There were so Fridays I'd come home with a couple of gallons of beer from the real world, folks would bring things from the garden, someone would grill a steak, everyone who didn't cook would clean up, and we'd just hang out and have fun. So many evenings I'd go over to Miles place with a guitar, or with his guitar, and we'd pass it around over a few beers, talking about philosophy, Star Wars, or some book or other. It's hard not to write about the strange magic of that space.
My partner and I bonded over similar experiences, mine on a weird little religious commune in California and theirs as a temporary worker at Omega Institute. Both had exploitation, people on weird power trips, frustrating dynamics, but also a strange magic and freedom. Both were sort of fantasy worlds, but places that let us see through this one, let us imagine something that something else is possible behind the veil.
There are many such veils.
Perhaps it's fitting that this is more meandering, as a good wander can help the transition between lots of hard thinking and lots of hard working.

'writing is more than just the process by which you obtain a piece of text, right? it's also about finding out what you wanted to say in the first place, and how you wanted to say it. this post existed in my head first as a thought, then it started to gel into words, and then i tried pulling those words out to arrange them in a way that (hopefully) gets my point across. ... i alone can get the thought out and writing is how i do that.'

In hindsight, it was probably any direct fetch form instances with only ipv4 connectivity that failed. Posts that got sent on from or via elsewhere showed up, so it was not immediately obvious.

We had a surprise opportunity to go to the beach this weekend, near Southport NC. I have the weird preference to sling my hammock under the house, between the clotheslines, instead of sleeping indoors. Half camping? I use a big rubbermaid box as my "suitcase" and put my shoes on it overnight... It was cold at night, but an underquilt and reflecting bubble insulation in the hammock, with an inflatable mattress on top of my down sleeping bag, kept me cozy.
My wife and I went to …

Map showing lines indicating 57 Morse code ham radio contacts, throughout much of the US and one in Canada. All done on 5W or less of power; some were 2–3W.
Sunrise with a ham radio wire antenna dangling from a fiberglass push-up mast at one side. The picture doesn't do the sunrise justice.

Ran into a weird issue with macOS and iTerm 2 while experimenting with #talos over the weekend.
Short version: I had to quit iTerm, reset the local network security permission for it and restart it before I could run talosctl from my a session in iTerm. Maddeningly it was working from a session in Terminal.app
The long version is at #homelab #iterm2

Needed to build something quite weird that involves NFC tags and mainly Notion DB as storage and UI
Didn’t feel like learning Notion cos I am not a fan.
Worked with ChatGPT to make a spec and prompt this was useful while doing that totally changed my mind to something better
Gave it to codex and it one-shot built it perfectly in 20 minutes without interaction, worked first time once I fixed a mistake I made in Notion.
Lots of issues with AI but it’s certainly moving…

This week's #TuneTuesday is #SteppingStoneSongs.
I've talked about this one here before, maybe a year ago, but it's always a good time for a re-up. 'Baby Food' is a 12 minute long song by Coil that *really* got me deep into the rabbithole that is weird electronic music.

Huh, that's weird.
Watching a documentary set in a hospital ER and they're blurring some obvious things - patient names, computer screens not relevant to what's going on, faces of people without a media release, more graphic injuries, etc.
But they also blurred a *clock* in the background of one scene. I have to wonder what the story there is. Just a big 7-segment LED clock on the wall of one of the trauma bays.

I can understand maybe not being able to comprehend this due to age (he's 79).
But there's a lot of young people who don't have problems with images like these which show wrong things, make up stuff that's weird, look creepy and misspell text.
I wonder if perhaps repeated COVID infections contribute to people's mental decline that is similar to age-related mental issues.

Paint samples arrived today and it was obvious which was gonna work better so I ordered a full 2.5l can.
Only to get an email back saying they can't make that colour in that varnish. Weird. That was literally the only actually blue they said they'd do last time they said they couldn't deliver what the website let me order.
After some discussion they have referred it to the Tainting Supervisor and it's apparently going to be here Monday.
Similarly for the wood, failed to arrive again today. They reckon Monday this time really for reals. Fingers crossed coz the carpenter can't do more until the wood arrives really and he's going on holiday this time next week.
So assuming the wood comes, four days to build the doors and finish off the walls of the closet and stuff.
Hopefully it can all be done in that time. Or at least the hard bits leaving the easy stuff for the less carpentery builder.

Went for a visit over to BlueSky and after being there for less than five minutes, got attacked by a weird, seemingly coordinated group consisting of religious "feminists" (ie, they fight for the right to be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen) and Black people. What a weird coalition.
This was apparently for the crime of being on US-owned social media while progressive, European, female and under-pigmented.

Yea I can’t imagine why anyone thought this dipshit was defending rape…I mean aside from the over half a dozen posts where he defended rape as “not immoral”, literally said “No. In fact, the word "rape"…didn't even exist until the 1800s.” and arguing that being “owned”* wasn’t “horrific”
Complete mystery why people went after him, must be some weird BlueSky thing. 😂

Simply being "owned" isn't "horrific" (all wives were "owned"), or do you not believe providing
"safe haven" was a form of protection?
By that standard, the Van Daan family that hid the family of Anne Frank were subjecting them to "horrific mistreatment."

This week's #GrindayFriday is new 7" EP 'Flayed and Ready' by Boston, Massachusetts' ROTBUS. This is a really deathgrindy bunch of songs, with some great drums, actual riffs, and growly vocals.
