It’s possible that the recent court order about how they can’t target observers is functioning as sand in their gears — which right now I think is all the courts and the law can be, sand in the gears. They’ve been leaning really hard on harassing, intimidating, attacking, tear-gassing, and detaining observers; they need that to function in the city.
Noem responded to that court order with a snotty “well we’re not doing anything wrong so this doesn’t change anything” kind of statement, but it’s possible agents have been told not to push it until they can get another court to overturn the order. That would fit with them focusing on the suburbs: observers are less organized there, and homes are more spread out.

So, now ICE says that it can enter homes without a warrant.
The article below says "The change is almost certain to meet legal challenges and stiff criticism"
Gee, I would also expect "The change is almost certain to meet the barrel of a gun".
I fully anticipate that this is going to introduce ICE agents to the sensation of buckshot - or a bullet - at short range.
So yet another section of our Constitution dies at the hands of trump and his minions…

So in another dream I just woke up from, I was talking to someone about "the idea problem" (that it's becoming harder to monitize ideas, from a vox article written by an AI cooked reporter).
iheart.com/podcast/105-it-coul
Basically, I was arguing that the majority of inventions target men because patriarchy puts economic control in men's hands. As men have started to help more with childcare, there have been more inventions related to childcare. (I don't have any idea if this is true. Seems legit, but I'm just relating my dream. I think I was also oversimplifying a bit to "men" and "women" because of my audience, but anyway it was a dream.) There's actually more low-hanging fruit, I pointed out, related to making care work easier.
So I argued that the real problem was a failure to invest in research into solving that problem. Today there are all these boondoggles built around killing people. What if, instead of all this government research into killing people, we dumped a ton of money into making it easier to support a household? That would be great for the economy. (Being asleep, I seem to have forgotten that working people need money.)
In the blur of being just awake I started thinking about how you could kickstart the US economy by taking the money from the AI boondoggle and other autonomous murder bots and create something like a program to build robots for housekeepers. You'd still be funding tech with government money, so the same horrible people get paid, but you're now actually solving real problems. It wouldn't even matter if it was a boondoggle, honestly. Just dumping money into something other than murdering people is good enough.
I imagined first if there was a program to fund a robot housecleaner, like robot dog with AI some laundry pickup, that would be provided, free of charge, to help people with children. It would work the same as the military boondoggle where a private company makes the government buy a piece of hardware from them and then also pay them to service it for some number of years. But instead of that hardware sitting around waiting to kill someone, it would be getting brought to people's houses to help them.
Then I thought, hey, you could even boost the economy more if you just had government funding for doulas and housecleaners and paid them a living wage. Hey, you could really kickstart the economy by nationalizing healthcare and including doula support as part of all births. Oh, and you could also just include the optional household help for families with children until the kids turn 18.
None of this is perfect (I don't actually think most of this is possible from any state), but the point is that it's actually wildly easy to figure out all kinds of ways to invest in the economy and monitize ideas as long as you aren't entirely focused on the same old "make money from spying on people and killing them." Funny that. Like they said in the podcast, maybe "finding ideas" isn't the problem.
Hope you enjoyed the weird semi-awake brain dump/rant.

Before these bastard signs of fair were born,
Or durst inhabit on a living brow;
Before the golden tresses of the dead,
The right of sepulchres, were shorn away,
To live a second life on second head;
Ere beauty's dead fleece made another gay:

Added a zoom level to the Category page on the Exocortex-Log app. Can make the graphs look a lot cleaner now.
Looking back over the last 100 months here, we can see in general my social life is quite seasonal -- Festivals are a lot of social all weekend long and a couple of them in a month really bumps up the hours from my usual habit of sitting alone in a dark room pressing buttons.
The peak in 2019 is a summer filled with Glasto and Noisily and another festival or camping trip I don’t seem to have recorded the name of.
Then clearly visible is the drop-off in social activity as the COVID pandemic hit. Virtual-Social (IE zoom meetings and the like) picked up quite a bit around there but had died back to almost nothing way before the hours spent with actual people started to tick up.
Annoyingly, I have my biggest gap in data right on top of the pandemic there, where I failed to back up for months and then data became corrupted.
When the data-hole is over we see social life still not really returning until the middle of 2021 and not really getting back into stride until summer 2022.
It remains much lower now on average with lower peaks than before the pandemic too. Multiple reasons.
Work is pretty constant all the way though other than the data-hole. Dipping when I take time off for social mostly.
That data-hole is annoying. Back up your data kids.

Congestive softener
A congestion softener is a party whose network operator, on the basis of the most up-to-date data from Annex 14, paragraph 1, determines that the allocation of transport capacity to this party leads to an increase in the available transport capacity, as referred to in Article 9.5, paragraph 4, for other parties and does not lead to an increase in congestion in another network part of that network operator or in the network of another network operator.

When "self-driving" cars were first getting some hype back in ~2015 or so, I told people who asked me that I didn't think they'd be safe, and that I wished the same money were being invested in driver-assistance systems instead.
At the time, advocates were claiming that self-driving cars would be safer than human drivers.
We now have both self-driving cars and some nifty new driver assistance things, and it turns out that the self-driving cars are in fact being developed by corporations whose attention to the bottom line results in danger to others on the road pretty regularly. I don't actually have stats here for whether they're "safer than human drivers" or not, but the opportunity for one bad software update to make *all* self-driving cars dangerous at once kinda makes me doubt that.
Here's an example of Waymo cars getting "more aggressive" as they try to balance between being too timid and obstructing traffic (including emergency vehicles) and being too dangerous:
archive.ph/JJuGv
Here's another example of passing stopped schoolbusses leading to a software recall:
abcnews.go.com/GMA/News/waymo-
In the first article, Waymo claims 91% fewer serious accidents per mile. Obviously an independent audit would be actually trustworthy, but even if we take that claim at face value, it's meaningless if an update tomorrow causes 100,000 accidents.
Note that they could be using better engineering practices, and the fact that they aren't shows that they don't care enough about the risks. They could be deploying new software versions incrementally and slowly, letting new versions rack up lots of miles only on a few vehicles before pushing them to a fleet. The should also have the equivalent of a simulation unit test for "schoolbus is stopped, what do?" and if a software version fails that test, it doesn't make it to the fleet. Clearly they don't have that.
I feel pretty vindicated in my earlier prediction that this tech is a bad idea in the hands of the current advocates.

Here's the blogpost for my first #winter hike last weekend. It was good to start with a quick & small tour to refresh some of the basics. Now I feel prepared for some larger tours.
(I think I really want another plugin to display the photos. This one doesn't play well with the use of alt-texts *sigh*)

Good Morning #Canada
Overnight news of Trump attacking another country in a blatant attempt to seize their resources should be a wakeup call for Canada. Does anyone here think a strike on Ottawa to remove the current government couldn't happen? Could the U.S. find a stooge willing to become the interim leader? How much oil, aluminum, uranium, hydropower or other resources would be looted before Trump strokes out from too many big macs. Yesterday I would have laughed at this scenario but today it starts to be less of a fantasy.
I glossed over this article when it was first published back in November but now I'm leaning towards support of developing a volunteer force in Canada. Perhaps a 2-year voluntary military service for our youth to provide employment and training. I don't want a volunteer military force to ever be used and hopefully it becomes a deterrent. But unfortunately a serious discussion is needed.

What is it like to live here now?
A message comes through from a neighbor about a swarm of ICE agents in a home just a few blocks away — gone by the time I was there to check it out. Nobody knows whether ICE abducted anyone there.
A message comes through from another neighbor trying to find support for a pregnant woman whose husband was just abducted. She cannot even figure out what she wants to ask for; she is in shock. I have no way to verify this story.

Filibuster is a word that now tends to me endless "debate" in the US Senate.
But its older meaning is that of a person who privately (or pretense-privately) attacks another country.

Another evening of filter refactoring and optimization, a few more nice performance jumps.

Had Fun

Bought a car/micro-camper

Bought a van to do up as a micro-camper, and did a temporary rush job of that conversion myself while waiting in the list for the pro to do it.
Then the pro gave himself a health criss the week it was booked so I took apart my temp job and only got another temp kit-job in it's place.
Went out in it like four times during that and then broke my wrist and couldn't really use it or improve it.
Then had to take it apart even more to try
and figure out where the ad-blue hole was.
I will do a proper permanent job of the
floor and walls and ceiling and adjustments to the kit-job to make it the nicest it's been so far during the spring next year.
My assumption that the prior conversion
into a van and for wheelchair-access meant the microcamper conversion was half-done already turned out to be false.
If I buy a new one, it'll be one that has never been wheelchair adapted.
But it's going okay. Only scraped it once so far.
Fewer than aimed for or booked, but I broke my wrist and had to cancel the second half of the summer.
Went to a conference about money and computers and fringe decentralized social media and it wasn't as boring as you might expect and felt pretty much like a festival.
Exactly the target number! It's lovely.
Took 3 times longer than I'd hoped and
50% more money than I'd planned for really.
Still improvements to make but they will
be incremental and gradual over the coming year or two now.
It's been interest-only for 20 years so a big old lump sum payment that I never really expected to be able to make. Expected to have to sell and move at the end of the mortgage term.
But surprisingly the stocks ISA got high enough to pay it off after all, so I did that.
Cash-flow ruined by that and the bedroom but should start to feel a bit richer next year.

And in the middle of all of that, people were still out there watching for ICE, driving all over in the cold, trying to observe them and film them, trying to save just one person from being kidnapped, then another, then another.
If these fascists thought they were going to win by breaking us, they thought wrong. This fight may be on our doorstep for a long time yet, but I do now see anybody looking to fold.
Minneapolis and St. Paul will endure. ICE will melt in hell.

Until recently, I resisted using the F-word to describe President Trump.
For one thing, there were too many elements of classical fascism that didn’t seem to fit.
For another, the term has been overused to the point of meaninglessness, especially by left-leaning types who call you a fascist if you oppose abortion or affirmative action.
For yet another, the term is hazily defined, even by its adherents.
From the beginning, fascism has been an incoherent doctrine, and ev…

Mailbag: How did Super Bowl teams rebuild? dallascowboys.com/news/mailbag

The House passed this year’s final batch of spending bills on Thursday as lawmakers,
still smarting from last fall’s record 43-day shutdown,
worked to avoid another funding lapse for a broad swath of the federal government.
The four bills total about $1.2 trillion in spending
and now move to the Senate,
with final passage needed next week before a Jan. 30 deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown.
Three of the bills had broad, bipartisan support.

Donald Trump this week touted his administration’s dramatic cuts to the federal workforce,
as remaining workers steeled themselves for another potential government shutdown — and more possible cuts — in the new year.
“Big news for the USA!” Trump wrote in a post on his social media site, over a graph that showed plummeting federal employment.
The post cited jobs numbers from earlier this month showing federal employment at its lowest in more than a decade,
down 271,000…
