In the Netflix/Spotify/Amazon era,
many of us access copyrighted works purely in digital form
– and that means we rarely have the chance to buy them.
Instead, we are stuck renting them,
subject to all kinds of terms and conditions.
And because the content is digital,
reselling it,
lending it,
even preserving it for your own use
inevitably requires copying.
Unfortunately, when it comes to copying digital media,

It's possible that some of the conflicts are our own fault: it's easier to make mistakes in svn's model where you create a branch by copying into a folder and can operate on subfolders. Git is simpler in that way: you have a working copy and commands to switch branches. But I blame svn's merge metadata tracking being less robust that git…
If you want a roadmap of the UK's internet regulation, just look at Russia's.
The UK has been copying Russian internet policy for years, and then describing their own approach as "world leading".

Today, there’s a PR to address it:
A damning new study could put AI companies on the defensive.
In it, Stanford and Yale researchers found compelling evidence that AI models are actually copying all that data,
not “learning” from it.
Specifically, four prominent LLMs
— OpenAI’s GPT-4.1, Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro, xAI’s Grok 3, and Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet
— happily reproduced lengthy excerpts from popular
— and protected
— works, with a stunning degree of accuracy.

@… First up is changing the SD partition table to #GPT. It's more modern for a reason, I say. I dislike using anything called "msdos" in 2026.
So here I am breaking open the img file, copying the contents over and updating cmdline.txt and fstab. 🙈 Here's hoping it'll boot.

Win11 is filled with tiny little bugs.
This piss me out more than all the big stuff like Co-pilot that I can just not use or disable.
For example:
-Ctrl-C not copying.
-File that refuse to be dragged and dropped unless I close the file manager and restart it
-File that auto-revert to their old name
after I renamed them.
And all kind of other small weirdness that just make my day more painful.
99% of stakeholder "ideas" are just copying a feature they saw on a competitor's product. And the features they notice most are the ones that yell at their users the loudest.
Now all software (not just consumer apps, but also metrics dashboards) yells at you, and trains you to attend to its yelling. Strategy becomes dominated by the overriding need to make the good number go up.
I see somebody else is on this topic today! And yes, billionaires will use regulatory capture to the maximum extent they can get away with — so yes, I fully expect the AI lobby to advocate a tangled legal regime where LLM output is copyrighted but copying data to train an LLM is not a copyright violation.

Oh well, our upcoming client doesn't provide cc files for each shot. Instead, we need to extract the grading values from an EDL file. Fortunately I've already written a script to do that a few years ago for another show.
The time to write a script might be more than what it takes to do the task manually (here it would be copying values from a text file to an xml file). But it pays off if you have to repeat the task. Even if that is 7 years later.
The Beekeeper movie is a great action film but is also a mixed bag of values making it a bad movie. Ends up being not a good vigilante movie, not a good anti-hero movie, zero suspense, wasted conspiracy potential, unapologetic copying and badly done trope of the 'John Wick as the boogyman for bad guys'.
I understand movies that just try (and many times succeed) to be mindless action movies where the plot is not the priority. But the Beekeeper movie does try to have a moral mes…

this is exceedingly strange and the only obvious symptom is gtk-keystores failing to open, and a search on those can only suggest creating fresh accounts and copying over from all previous, which is far more work than blowing away #Ubuntu and starting over with #Debian13, but this SHOULDN"T be so mysterious and require such drastic measures! All that happened was perhaps an auto-update, but gdm3 rejects the first login then accepts none further, and gnome-shell --wayland will run, but highly crippled, hotkeys disabled, and many programs will not run.
Today's tech puzzle I did not ask for 😞

This is one of those days.
All regular things went excellent, which is the main thing anyway.
All technical things went and are going terribly.
From copying files, to downloading new and needed iso's, to starting appimages on musl, to window rules for applications: each and every one is a mess. Slackware, Gentoo, Alpine > out of the window, done. Getting really tired with all these hoops and no-go's.

They've mindlessly set it to be a password entry field so it can't be seen, but the 2FA app I'm copying the code from displays it in a nice large font.
They're checking the box for the sake of checking the box, not because it adds any security.
But at least it's inconvenient for all the users, so the policy has that going for it.
There is no shortage of information that needs to be preserved for very long periods of time.
But there is a problem:
current long-term storage of digital media
– including in datacentres that underpin the cloud
– relies on magnetic tape and hard disks, both of which have limited lifespans.
That means repeated cycles of copying on to new tapes and disks are required.
Now experts at Microsoft in Cambridge say they have refined a method for long-term data st…

Checking out SwiftGodot here! It’s cool! The tutorial has us copying the dylib manually from SwiftPM’s .build folder into the Godot project. Does this mean that we’d need to copy it every time we update the Swift code? Is there some build config step I’m missing?

So how you'd feel if you learned that the guy from whom you've been copying all your homework recently, has been not-so-secretly helping fascist governments commit genocide? And he's quite proud of it too.
Oh right, you'd just say "it's not like doing my own homework will change anything". And then you'll give him your lunch money.
