Took me a surprisingly long time to figure out, so in case you’re struggling as well: #SemanticScholar features its own PDF reader prominently, but makes it quite difficult to find the actual link to the original paper. Easiest way seems to be the DOI above the title, which is actually a clickable link. Once you know …

Annals of anthropology beefs:
Just received an email from the organizing committee (OC) of the WAU (World Anthropological Union) Congress, which was very confusing. Apparently some kind of beef between the WAU Steering Committee (SC) and the OC? Perhaps SC people are angry because their panel/paper proposals were not accepted? Anybody have the inside scoop on this?
Here's the OC's published letter about this: #anthropology #anthrodons

Hey @… I was just listening to the great literary olfactoloy episode with @allylouks.bsky.social€, but I feel that the existence/role of human pheromones has been a bit misrepresented.
I have worked on mammalian pheromones for my PhD, and I have encountered (at least) two major definitions of the term "pheromone", one based on the function of a substance, and the other, which I personally prefer, on the information flow involved in it (doi.org/10.1159/000096511).
Based on the Sbarbati & Osculati definition, a pheromone would be a component that conveys information between individuals of the same species.
There is also quite a bit of research that argues for the existence of human pheromones (e.g. doi.org/10.1002/ar.a.20125, doi.org/10.1002/ar.a.20125, doi.org/10.1126/science.119833)
However, the discussion on the existence of human pheromones is difficult, as it touches on the topic of free will as many reactions to odor are involuntary. During the International Symposium on Olfaction and Taste held in Iceland in 2024, there have been several session on human olfaction touching on sensitive aspects such as olfaction-mediated effects on mate choice and pregnancy, but none of the researchers dared utter the word pheromone, while colleagues working on other mammals where happily talking about pheromonal effects for very similar topics.
Long story short, I feel that saying there is no hard evidence for human pheromones is misrepresenting the current research.

did you know? teleost fish maintain neutral buoyancy with their swim bladder, which they pump with gas as they descend into depths. specifically, they can pump it with hyperbaric oxygen at partial pressures of *several hundred atmospheres*
they also pressurize their eyes in the same way

The swim bladder rete mirabile represents a very efficientcountercurrent exchanger. Oxygen and carbon dioxide mole-cules returning to the venous side of the rete mirabile will there-fore diffuse back to the arterial side, resulting in a countercur-rent multiplication of the initial increases in oxygen and carbondioxide partial pressures. The back diffusion of carbon dioxideagain is of crucial importance for the initiation of the Root effectwithin the swim bladder tissue because it results in an…

Oh, Hacker News…FFS. Something got lost in the sad game of Popular Press Telephone between the actual study and this snotty post.
The actual study is here:
acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/AN
It notes that:
1. Most research on air cleaning devices used air samples, not human health outcomes. (It’s far more difficult to conduct a study on the latter.)
2. Not many people are studying whether e.g. UV air purifiers create toxic byproducts.
3. The available studies sure do measure a whole bunch of different things, and wouldn’t it be nice if they had more consistent standards.
Their main recommendation is basically “scientists should do more studies where they measure infection in humans, not just germs in the air.” And that’s fair: It’s reasonable to •guess• that fewer germs in the air means less sickness, but it’s nice to actually •test• that!
However, AFAICT, nothing in the study warrants the “tinfoil hats” remark. Unlike a tinfoil hats, we have plenty good reason to think at least some of these devices actually work; the paper just wants the research to go deeper. It’s one giant “further study needed.” mastodon.social/@ngate/1150917
