Hey everyone,
You know Joy. We run Gaza Verified together. But while I’m safely tucked away in Ireland, Joy is in Gaza, being forced to endure Israel‘s ongoing genocide and the resulting famine.
Last week, we raised $40,200 for families in Gaza stuck under the bombs in the North to help them evacuate South.
Joy got $0 of that.
She and her family need your help too.
Please take some time to donate to her fundraiser.

I'm especially interested in a few things if anyone is willing to help...
1) missing words and simple typos - My ADHD brain skips words coming out and fulls them in when reading, so it's easy for me to make mistakes and hard for me to catch them.
2) questions - I tend to work from a lot of assumed knowledge, collected from all over, and I'm really trying to make my work more accessible. I assume I'm talking about a bunch of stuff most folks don't know, but I don't know which of them come from some rabbit hole I went down and which are more common knowledge.
3) challenges - I get bored when having things explained to me so I have a tendency to keep explanations light... Which can mean I leave out a bunch of critical context or logical steps.

I was downloading Neverwinter and wanted to know its file size. Luckily, I found the answer in a Reddit comment, which saved me a lot of trouble. Sharing this in case anyone on the fediverse happens to be downloading Neverwinter, you never know!

Dark fantasy scene from Neverwinter: Red Harvest. Four ominous figures stand on a platform with a glowing red symbol overhead. A giant, shadowy face looms in the stormy sky, creating a tense, foreboding atmosphere.

"An LLM helped me with some task" is not a good argument for these things increasing productivity. Did you also factor in all the cases where it made you slower? Where the output created extra work? And how much of your work/activity is that task?
All bigger studies we know (even those done by Google for example) show a total lack of meaningful productivity gains, especially when looking at a whole organization.

Just finished folding and hanging some laundry. It occured to me to wonder when was the button-buttonhole combo invented, and by whom? Based on the archeological finding of bone needles dated to many 10s of 1000s of years ago, fitted clothing in one form or another has been a thing for a very long time. Maybe even Neanderthals did it. So fasteners of some sort would exist, but what about the button-buttonhole combo as we know it today?

Today, using #GAFAM software is no longer a matter of needs or preferences. Today, it is a choice in the domain of ethics.
If someone gives me their personal data, be it their contact data, image, or anything else, it is my solemn duty to keep that data secure. If I give it away to an app that uses it for marketing purposes, to train models, to manipulate people, or simply sells it, I fail that trust.
So don't give apps unnecessary permissions, or simply don't use such apps. And if the whole system abuses your data — well, if you can't change it, there are always notebooks and pens, you know.

Just finished "Concrete Rose" by Angie Thomas (I haven't yet read "The Hate U Give" but that's now high on my list of things to find). It's excellent, and in particular, an excellent treatise on positive masculinity in fiction form. It's not a super easy book to read emotionally, but is excellently written and deeply immersive. I don't have the perspective to know how it might land among teens like those it portrays, but I have a feeling it's true enough to life, and it held a lot of great wisdom for me.
CW for the book include murder, hard drugs, and parental abandonment.
I caught myself in a racist/classist habit of thought while reading that others night appreciate hearing about: early on I was mentally comparing it to "All my Rage" by Sabaa Tahir and wondering if/when we'd see the human cost of the drug dealing to the junkies, thinking that it would weaken the book not to include that angle. Why is that racist/classist? Because I'm always expecting books with hard drug dealers in them to show the ugly side of their business since it's been drilled into me that they're evil for the harm they cause, yet I never expect the same of characters who are bankers, financial analysts, health insurance claims adjudicators, police officers, etc. (Okay, maybe I do now look for that in police narratives). The point is, our society includes many people who as part of their jobs directly immiserate others, so why and I only concerned about that misery being brought up when it's drug dealers?

Biblically accurate BGA footprint.
You know, for those times when you really need 6865 balls on your BGA package, which is 77mm on a side despite shrinking the ball pitch from the standard 1mm to 0.92mm so it wouldn't be even bigger.
I'm so glad I'm never going to have to design a board for this monster (it's a Versal so exactly zero chance of me ever wanting to use it even if I got one for free)

One of the biggest cultural issues we have is that no major media or journalistic institutions have been reinforcing norms of what things *should* look like. That corruption isn’t normal, that cronyism isn’t normal, that lies and scandals should be punished, that incompetence is disqualifying.
They’ve simply stopped pointing out that there are any standards at are, or that there used to be a bar of any sort. And now an entire generation doesn’t know this concept at all.

To me Toad the Wet Sprocket is one of those cool 1990s alternative rock bands and know them for their major hits like “All I Want” and “Fall Down”.
It was only in the last few years that I got to listen to some of their non-singles and “Windmills” from their 1994 album Dulcinea is one that really stood out to me with its laid-back melancholic vibe.

I'm not the target audience, but that second paragraph hit me in the gut

Picture of book page from Eloquent Rage:
I'm no therapist, but I'm a Black girl's Black girl, and I know Black-girl pain when I see it. Many of us who couldn't access pretty privilege, those of us who weren't popular or cool, those of us nerdy girls who stayed to ourselves, wrote stories and dreamed of lives as writers, grew up and found a home in feminism, a place where we were seen, a place where others were as mad about injustice as we were.

Have you had an "AI error in your favor" yet?
I just got done slogging through Amazon customer support chat, where while talking to the bot it promised an item was returnable within 90 days, even though it actually was only eligible for the normal 30 days policy. When I finally got through to a human, they were able to let me know why the return actually wasn't eligible, but when I quoted them what the bot had promised, they made an exception and let me do the return. I didn't even really try to push the bot to make any promises, though that should be easy.

And for that riches where is my deserving?

Some of you already know that after finishing TCR, something really tough happened — my blue fixed gear bike, the one that’s been with me since 2018, was stolen. That bike carried me through countless adventures, and losing it just a month before the start of TPR feels devastating.

Now I’m in a tricky spot: no bike, no extra funds, and the race I’ve been preparing for is almost here.

From personal experience this weekend, I now know that it's possible to drive over 500km on a single charge in a Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Google Maps' calculation of a 210km route from my location in London, Ontario to a house in Owen Sound. It claims to be the fastest route with the usual traffic, and saves 3% energy over two slightly shorter routes that would take more time.
My car's app showing a current charge of 15% this morning, with an estimate of 81km of range.

Back at the start of these Gists I said that Catherine Connolly was having a mare of a campaign. This, of course, was because I am an idiot. There is a giant mountain in the US carved with the faces of a couple of slavers, and two guys who tried to stop slavery. Now most Americans will stop right there and say, "wait, two? Lincoln did that though..." They'll say that because Americans don't know anything about their own history, including the fact that the practice of slavery remained central to the southern economy well through Roosevelt's administration. If this is not familiar to you (because, maybe, you were taught history in the US) and you'd like to actually learn about that, you might want to read "Slavery by Another Name."
But let's talk about half-slaver mountain for a minute. This mountain is functionally a sacred site for Americans, but it's literally a sacred site for Black Hills Sioux. Speaking of stolen land, did you know that JBLM (a military base in Washington state) is built on land promised the Puyallup in the Treaty of Medicine Creek before being stolen in 1918? I remember being taught that all the land was stolen a long time ago and now there's nothing we can do. Yeah, does anyone remember that DAPL was under Obama? In fact, unused federal lands are supposed to be returned to the tribes from which the land was taken but there's a whole site to auction off federal property... That's a whole section of the government dedicated to violating the Treaty of Fort Laramie.
They could just comply with the treaty, as they are legally obligated to do. These violations are ongoing. Slavery, again, is still legal. Slaves are still used by major corporations today, they just have to be tricked into confessing to a crime first. The sins that this country is built on remain fully active today... Because the system was built to preserve white supremacists patriarchy. How could the founding of the US not lead *directly* to Trump? How could this have been different, from the beginning?
But, please, tell me, how, exactly, are you going to fix that by voting harder in the mid terms. How?

Day 26: Emily Short
If you know who Short is, you know exactly why she's on this list. If you don't, you're probably in the majority. She's an absolutely legendary author within the interactive fiction (IF) community, which gets somewhat pigeonholed by stuff like Zork when there's actually a huge range of stuff in the medium some of which isn't even puzzle-focused, and Short has been writing & coding on the bleeding edge of things for decades.
I was lucky enough to be introduced to Short's work in graduate school, where we played "Galatea" as part of an interactive fiction class. Short uses a lot of clever parser tricks to make your conversation with a statue feel very fluid and conversational, giving to contemporary audiences a great example of how vibrant interaction with a well-designed agent can be in contrast to an LLM, if you're willing to put in some work on bespoke parsing & responses (although the user does need to know basic IF conventions). While I didn't explore the full range of Galatea's many possible outcomes, it left a strong impression on me as a vision for what IF could be besides dorky puzzles, and I think that "visionary" is a great term to describe Short.
If you'd like you get a feel for her (very early) work, you can play Galatea here: #30AuthorsNoMen
