I don’t think we know how to do this. There’s a vast spectrum of schemes for fixing this, ranging from capitalist versions of “intellectual property” to Marxist “just end capitalism” notions to various versions of “easy, society should just be different.” I find them all lacking, both in theory and in practice. This is a problem that’s existed for millennia, not decades, and I’m not convinced we have a clear solution.

As a belated public service announcement, here is some fairly bland reporting on snow removal tools. If you live in Toronto, where 50 cm of the white just fell, all shovels and snow blowers will be sold out in every store by 8:42 am. Pro tip - salt doesn't work on 2 feet of snow. Here in Belle Ewart, where we received 20ish cm from #MotherNature, I will be using 2 regular shovels, one with an ergonomic sexy curve, and my handy single stage battery blower. The electric blower struggles with the chunky heavy stuff the evil plow operator dumps at the end of my driveway but so far it hasn't been defeated. Remember to lift with your legs, which I've never seen anyone do.

Then I had to clear in front of the garage doors from the first snowstorm. Snow drifts with frozen rain on top had turned them into glaciers.
After some trial and error, I found that using the maul would break the ice into boulders. Then it was a function of breaking the boulders to the point where I could lift them and toss them clear.
They were not light and I am very tired.

Abstract: The Cartesian tree of a sequence captures the relative order of the sequence's elements. In recent years, Cartesian tree matching has attracted considerable attention, particularly due to its applications in time series analysis. Consider a text $T$ of length $n$ and a pattern $P$ of length $m$. In the exact Cartesian tree matching problem, the task is to find all length-$m$ fragments of $T$ whose Cartesian tree coincides with the Cartesian tree $CT(P)$ of the pattern. Although the exact version of the problem can be solved in linear time [Park et al., TCS 2020], it remains rather restrictive; for example, it is not robust to outliers in the pattern.
To overcome this limitation, we consider the approximate setting, where the goal is to identify all fragments of $T$ that are close to some string whose Cartesian tree matches $CT(P)$. In this work, we quantify closeness via the widely used Hamming distance metric. For a given integer parameter $k>0$, we present an algorithm that computes all fragments of $T$ that are at Hamming distance at most $k$ from a string whose Cartesian tree matches $CT(P)$. Our algorithm runs in time $\mathcal O(n \sqrt{m} \cdot k^{2.5})$ for $k \leq m^{1/5}$ and in time $\mathcal O(nk^5)$ for $k \geq m^{1/5}$, thereby improving upon the state-of-the-art $\mathcal O(nmk)$-time algorithm of Kim and Han [TCS 2025] in the regime $k = o(m^{1/4})$.
On the way to our solution, we develop a toolbox of independent interest. First, we introduce a new notion of periodicity in Cartesian trees. Then, we lift multiple well-known combinatorial and algorithmic results for string matching and periodicity in strings to Cartesian tree matching and periodicity in Cartesian trees.

Some of the people are software uploads or implants in other people's brains, or infectious biological agents and things.
The story is galactic in scale across time and space with good world building, a good tale weaving of elements together.
I liked the scene where the woman falling to her death in a lift-shaft remembered she was on a space-ship which only had gravity coz of engine thrust, so saved herself turning the engines off with a wrist controller.
Trouble is I came to it infrequently with long gaps and so struggled to keep track of what's going on quite a bit. Lots of different elements to keep track of.
My fault, should try and concentrate harder and remember things.
