If there was a moment when the absence of a US strategy on Iran was exposed, then this was it.
Donald Trump demanded on Saturday that the UK, China, France, Japan and others participate in a naval escort for oil tankers through the strait of Hormuz.
Despite launching the attack on Iran, with Israel, the White House does not seem to have fully anticipated what was likely to follow.
Iran had few good military options for fighting back, but attacking US bases, US allies and m…

It was a terrible mistake or maybe even a warcrime, but there are no excuses in these days of relative precise weaponry, satellite images, other intelligence. The USA killed innocent children and it could have been prevented.

Really glad the US just decommissioned the four mine sweepers we’d had covering the Strait of Hormuz, and glad we live in such a peaceful world that we no longer need them there as they had been for the last 35 years. Phew.

Russia, Iran hold naval drills as tensions rise over potential US strikes: benborges.xyz/2026/02/19/russi

Fears about the global economic fallout from the war in Iran grew on Sunday
as the U.S. energy secretary acknowledged in a televised interview that there were
“no guarantees” that oil prices would fall in the coming weeks.
A day after President Trump called on other countries to send warships to the region to end the de facto Iranian blockade of the economically vital Strait of Hormuz,
foreign governments responded with caution— if at all

In hindsight, this January 13 announcement was significant:
«The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72 conducted a live fire Close In Weapon System exercise on 8 January 2026, according to information published by the U.S. Department of War. The drill confirmed the carrier’s ability to defeat close-range aerial and surface threats while operating in a strategically sensitive region.»

Also finished reading "Neptune's Fortune" by Julian Sancton.
In 1708, the San José — loaded with a billion dollars in gold and silver bound for the Spanish crown — was sunk by the English off Cartagena. Cuban-American diver Roger Dooley spent decades trying to find it.
Strongest in the naval history and Dooley's Cuba years. The Big Five treasure hunter section drags, and the discovery itself feels anticlimactic.
Still a compelling read.

If a convoy came under attack from Iranian missiles or drones, the escorting warship would have only seconds to respond.
Similar escort and air defence efforts have already been seen in the Red Sea against Houthi attacks, so there is a working model.
The problem is that such operations consume major resources and are extremely costly if they are to be sustained for every transit.
The danger would not come only from the air or the shore.
Iran could also rely on swarms…

who dominated the Pentagon and the White House after 9/11
believed the US could use force to remake the Middle East,
and their project left us with two enduring concepts that still shape American military power and politics today:
creative chaos and strategic deception.

Japan, the Philippines and the United States held joint military drills near the Bashi Channel -- the waterway between the Philippines and Taiwan, for the first time earlier this week.
The naval and aerial exercises were conducted under the framework of the Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA), and ran from Feb. 20 through Thursday.
On Tuesday, the Maritime Self-Defense Force took part in the drills, deploying a P-3C patrol aircraft for flight training alongside the…

On a hazy afternoon in the Persian Gulf nearly 40 years ago,
the captain of a U.S. Navy frigate summoned Lt. Gordan Van Hook to the bridge and handed him a pair of binoculars.
Through them, Lieutenant Van Hook, the ship’s chief engineer, saw the danger that lay ahead
— three Iranian mines.
The frigate, part of an American force sent to escort oil tankers, came to a stop well ahead of the mines.
But some 10 minutes later, an undetected mine exploded under the shi…

“The classic line of everybody, including myself, up to this point, was always,
‘it’s too big to fail,’ it will never close,”
said Neil Crosby, head of oil research at Sparta, an energy market analysis firm.
“Western or allied naval powers will never allow this to happen.”
At around 35 miles wide, maybe it was actually too small to fail — or just small enough that it could.
