The Trump administration recently dropped its
National Security Strategy
and, like all things Trump,
it’s equal parts nonsense and vitriol.
It signals a self-defeating retreat from any sort of global leadership
and the regime’s open promotion of white nationalism at home and abroad.
The document is extremely light on the “strategy” part,
but is chock full of naked racism and Great Replacement rhetoric.
If you fed a low-rent knockoff version o…

Submitting to an academic conference and once more am completely amazed that people who call themselves academic technologists use LaTeX to make PDFs to communicate their research. This is by far the worst widely-adopted software I've ever used, and I really hope I don't ever use it again. Awful nonsense, which I think is only still in use for the purposes of gatekeeping other disciplines away from interacting with computer science.

Content warning: open source whinging

Ugh why is this always the way. I evaluated like 25 authentication servers for a small scale web project — I do want to support things like OIDC and Passkeys, so this is not something I really want to make myself like the old days of “use crypt() on the passwords and just make a simple database”.
5 of them are just dev mode garbage that will never see the light of day as a thing people use.
2 of them are home network nonsense for people who want enterprise login for their family, but where One Nerd controls the whole user-list.
15 of them are freemium "open source" where they withhold features for their enterprise tier and make them so unfortunately difficult to deploy, all requiring postgresql databases and a complex containerization setup and helm charts and oh so much.
and then there's kanidm, which is great except its opinions make it completely unusable for a community project, it's really more trying to fit the ‘enterprise unix authentication' space. Kudos to them for communicating it but it's the wrong tool, even if it is really good.
And then there's rauthy. Which is exactly what I want, well built and delightful, uses a lightweight embedded database, and even has a peer-to-peer sync for scalability. But customizing it is going to be a lesson in building it from source repeatedly, and its configuration is just a bit strange, and its frontend is extremely Backend Developer Wrote A Web UI. I guess I got a second project. And maybe a third to make debian packages of it.
Yet it really is the best of the options _by far_.
NLNet supported projects continue to punch above their weight class.

I don't think I'm ever going to enjoy gifts.
I can get why people would give them to children. After all, children don't have their own budget. However, I'm talking about occasional gifts, not a new toy every second week, because "we must outcompete the other grandparents". But to adults?
Once I've heard that you should gift people with what they won't buy themselves. Well, that's won't work for me. I'm a minimalist. If I don't need something, I don't want to have it. Unnecessary junk is only emotional burden to me.
I can get why you'd enjoy something handmade. But something people bought? If I need something, I can buy it myself, when I need it. And I definitely don't need people to prove to me that they never cared to learn who I am, and just buy whatever they like or whatever is "fashionable"; which usually means exactly the opposite of what I'd prefer (i.e. something minimalistic). Or even worse, I don't need people manipulating me through gifts.
Sweets? Besides my diabetes, I don't really enjoy expensive shit that people generally buy because it's what's advertised. For the money they waste on it, I'd buy three times as much sweets I'd actually enjoy.
Gift cards? Oh yes, "you aren't supposed to give money, so let's just give the equivalent of money that's actually worth less than money". Actual money? And here we reach the true nonsense; we exchange the same amount of money, so it's just pointless gesture. Unless one of us gives less money…
What I'd really like, as a gift? Maybe that people would finally bother accepting me as who I am. The absolute minimum of caring that I hate consumerism, and not fueling it "for me".

Starfleet computers are nonsense but my headcanon that it's all just 2025-style AI and everything is a tower of vibes makes it make sense.

By now you’ve seen Trump’s big speech at Davos.
The slurring,
the confusing of Greenland and Iceland,
the nonsense about wind power,
and the racist smearing of Somalis before the whole world
—it was an unmitigated disaster.
But things got worse when Trump’s propagandists spun it all as a world-historical triumph:
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt unleashed an extraordinary stream of obsequious praise,
absurdly declaring that

Over and over, DHS goons descend on areas where immigrants congregate,
grab every non-white person they encounter,
and drag them away with little regard for their citizenship status.
Then they send out indignant liars like DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin to spew nonsense about how this is all perfectly legal.

explaining the standard federal law enforcement officers use to detain…

I’ve been researching #Italian #immigration to the #US for my #novel and every other primary source I open from 1890-1915 gives me major DéjŠ vu to how the #Republicans talk about immigration today.
“They aren’t white enough”, “they are a drain on our resources”, “deported because they would be a public charge”, “uneducated”, “barbaric”, “increasing crime”.
All the arguments are the same. Some of the laws are the same. And yet people in 1890 were arguing about the lack of race purity and “dirty blood” of people from Europe who the current conservatives would wholeheartedly consider white Christians and part of the great West or whatever.
Really makes you see as clear as day how BS and arbitrary all of this racist and anti-immigration rhetoric is. It’s nonsense. Always was. Always will be.
People deserve dignity and respect. Immigrants deserve to be welcomed in and accommodated.

We had our kitchen done last year. The first design that the kitchen company produced for us had two ovens.
"There's only the two of us" we said, "and with the air fryer & the microwave we hardly make use of one oven. We definitely don't need two."
"Oh but it's very fashionable at the moment" they told us, "and it looks better".
Suffice to say we didn't stand for any of that nonsense (or extra expense!) and ended up with just one oven.
Now today Mrs LT has pointed to a house she's seen for sale just down the road from us that has three ovens. THREE!
And it's not even Downton Abbey, just a 4-bed suburban house. When on earth will they ever make use of all that cooking capability?
