Almost done with RAM testing, the third box is underway. Still need to Clonezilla it, but figure I can just enjoy a few beers and watch some YT videos.

So, might've gotten a few things in the mail today...MUHAHAHA. The Minisforum MS-A2s have arrived and I've started getting the RAM upgraded and tested.

The first MS-A2 node is up and it only took the entire day. After fixing a ton of networking issues across the homelab I've got all the VMs running on the new node. The old nodes have been decomissioned which kinda marks a milestone. Still need to get the other two new nodes into the cluster, but should be fairly straightforward and can wait until tomorrow.

So, in order, I have to:
* Back up all my LXC's
* Install RAM in a Mac mini
* Reinstall ProxMox with #ZFS

My JS Krups is resisting netbooting. I see it doing a DHCP discover, and I see Kea responding with an offer, but then it just sends another Discover. Hmph. I can get to the serial console and doing boot net from there doesn't help; none of the keyboard shortcuts for network diag etc seem to work (except the one that displays the help for it...). So I took the flash SIM out and now it boots to Net rather than flash by default; alas with the same DHCP behaviour. Time to try isc-dhcp.…

A serial console photo, showing a Javastation openbootprom 'ok' prompt and help and 'show-devs' output. It's a boring white on black text.
The mainboard of a Javastation Krups, to the left are various connectors, just above middle is a speaker and below that the Microsparc, to the right are two RAM dimms and a flash SIMM.
A horribly hacky serial setup; between two keyboards sits a serial breakout box, various wires and crock clip leads. It's working by good luck rather than physics, The lights for RX/TX are green and the next LED is red.

Initial default PCB layout for the switch engine board.
Surprisingly simple, the UltraRAM means I should be able to keep the entire switch's buffering on chip and not need any external RAM. So most of the HP I/Os are completely unused.

In one of the more painful purchases I've done in a bit: just ordered 3 kits of Crucial DDR5 RAM for the MS-A2 servers. This will take them from 32GB -> 96GB which should work out a bit better for Proxmox. Unfortunately, my wallet is crying. If everything goes well, the RAM should get here just before the servers do.

I'm setting up a new device for someone who wants to try out Linux. What distro would you recommend?
Some information about the user:
- uses MacOS currently
- wants stuff to work (minimal tinkering after setup)
- quick to boot
The device will probs be quite an old device (~3-5 years old, 8gb RAM though) and is mostly to run OBS. I'll check system requirements when I know the device ofc, just wondering what you people think is a good distro for them.
