Quotes from @… : “Plan the learning. Not the solution. Not less planning. Different planning.
The question isn’t “How do we plan less?”, but “What are we actually trying to plan?”
Plan the learning: decide upfront what you need to understand, how you’ll find out, and what you’ll do with what you discover.”

We’ve been doing Q2 planning, and folks want estimates on when projects can be completed while we don’t even know yet what our options might be, let alone what an appropriate solution is.
I’ve been trying to focus on what to do next that will move us forward, and only give estimates for that.
But I can only estimate what I’ve done before, or can abstract from previous similar activities. Doing work breakdowns for very near horizons helps, but that develops over time. I can’t estimate past what’s visible to me now.

Multi-Sensor Trajectory Reconstruction of the 24 April 2025 Alaska #Fireball and Implications for Planetary Defense: arxiv.org/abs/2603.22630 -> "On 24 April 2025 at 18:30:57 UTC, a bright daytime fireball over Southcentral Alaska was detected by 37 seismic stations, 16 single infrasound sensors, and four infrasound arrays, yielding 30 ballistic and multiple fragmentation arrivals. The unprecedented density of seismoacoustic coverage enabled detailed reconstruction of the event using acoustic signals, with fragmentation source locations further guiding the identification of Doppler weather radar signatures of a meteorite fall. Incorporation of a radar-derived terminal point yielded a final trajectory solution, which agreed closely with an independent optical trajectory solution from video analysis. [...] This uniquely well-recorded event demonstrates the capability of dense seismoacoustic networks to constrain bolide trajectories, energetics, and fragmentation, with radar and optical data providing critical confirmation and complementary perspectives."

None of the "code generation" stuff is new by the way.
The tech industry has tried to speed up coding and increase software output for the last 3 to 4 decades, by various means; e.g. Rapid Application Development, Expert Systems, Object-Oriented Programming, thousands of different frameworks all the way to trying to off-shore development and exploit third-world labor.
The problem with this is: there is no software scarcity. Pretending that "we can't make software fast enough" is a red herring to hide the fact that making (good) software is 90% painstaking research, design, planning, marketing and talking to and supporting customers.
And 10% writing the actual code—the C-suite is doing ye olde "trying to find a technical solution to a social problem".

But no one has stopped to think about what any of that actually means. Before designing a "solution," you need a good, *shared* problem definition. If the beautiful clarity within the design team shatters on contact with any handoff, you didn't finish the job.

And people keep being suprised by the regular genocides that *keep fucking happening*. And yes, call what ICE is doing what it is. It is a gencoide. Even if it's not killing millions of people (yet), the "genocide" doesn't mean "killing logs of people" it means "trying to wipe out a specific ethnic, racial, or religious group." What the fuck is ICE trying to do? They're carrying out ethnic cleansing. It's genocide.
Genocide in Gaza, genocide in Syria, genocide in Turkey, China, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Serbia... why the fuck does it keep happening? I'll tell you why. It's states.
People like to think of countries and ethnic reagions as the same thing, but they aren't. They never have been. There's never been clear divisions between ethnic groups. But the existence of the state depends on a shared identity. When the truth is more complicated, the state must find a way to fix that. The solution is genocide. You can't separate the two. There can be no state without genocide. The mechanism to carry ou the kind of mass murder and the incentive to do so are really not easy to put together without the state. The state makes genocide viable, and the state demands genocide to protect it's own existence.
Every election is a dice roll. Every state is on a clock, waiting for the luck to run out. And the worst people possible are just waiting for their chance to win and carry out those genocides in order to lock in their power.
Never again means nothing unless you are attacking the root of genocide: the state.

Complementary Eigen-Zundel Interpretation Reconciles Thermodynamics and Spectroscopy of Excess Protons in Aqueous HF Solutions

arxiv.org/abs/2603.25371 arxiv.org/pdf/2603.25371 arxiv.org/html/2603.25371
arXiv:2603.25371v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Aqueous solutions of HF and HCl behave very differently at intermediate concentrations: HCl dissociates completely, whereas HF remains only partially dissociated and forms bifluoride (HF$_2^-$). This should lead to different excess-proton spectra in HF and HCl solutions, in contrast to experimental reports. Using ab initio molecular dynamics, we show that in HF the proton is not firmly bound to F$^-$, as suggested by textbook chemistry, but dynamically shared with a hydrating water molecule. This is rationalized by a modified Eigen-state description which also explains the formation of HF$_2^-$. The similar vibrational spectra of HF and HCl solutions are explained by a complementary Zundel picture in terms of almost identical excess proton transfer free-energy profiles for HF and HCl. These results reconcile thermodynamic and spectroscopic observations and provide a unified microscopic picture of excess protons in aqueous solution.

From synthetic turbulence to true solutions: A deep diffusion model for discovering periodic orbits in the Navier-Stokes equations
Jeremy P Parker, Tobias M Schneider
arxiv.org/abs/2602.23181 arxiv.org/pdf/2602.23181 arxiv.org/html/2602.23181
arXiv:2602.23181v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Generative artificial intelligence has shown remarkable success in synthesizing data that mimic complex real-world systems, but its potential role in the discovery of mathematically meaningful structures in physical models remains underexplored. In this work, we demonstrate how a generative diffusion model can be used to uncover previously unknown solutions of a nonlinear partial differential equation: the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in a turbulent regime. Trained on data from a direct numerical simulation of turbulence, the model learns to generate time series that resemble physically plausible trajectories. By carefully modifying the temporal structure of the model and enforcing the symmetries of the governing equations, we produce synthetic trajectories that are periodic in time, despite the fact that the training data did not contain periodic trajectories. These synthetic trajectories are then refined into true solutions using an iterative solver, yielding 111 new periodic orbits (POs) with very short periods. Our results reveal a previously unobserved richness in the PO structure of this system and suggest a broader role for generative AI: not as replacements for simulation and existing solvers, but as a complementary tool for navigating the complex solution spaces of nonlinear dynamical systems.

Abstract: We study the cone $\mathscr{P}_{\text{J}}$ of positive J-Hermitian matrices associated with an indefinite signature matrix J = $\text{Id}_{p,q}$. We show that the J-exponential map is bijective and use it to analyze the algebraic and geometric structure of $\mathscr{P}_{\text{J}}$. Through a canonical identification with the cone of positive definite matrices, we endow $\mathscr{P}_{\text{J}}$ with a natural Riemannian structure. In this setting, we define a J-geometric mean as the midpoint of geodesics and prove that it is uniquely characterized as the solution of a Riccati-type equation.

I've seen a bunch of "the CA age verification law is the best way to do a bad thing and so we shouldn't oppose compliance" takes, which others are rightly pointing out is a bad stance because it's blindingly obvious that compliance now sets the stage for compliance later and the clearly set up later is mandatory verification of age data. Even if you think that, for example, California's current "progressive" government won't go there, we're all currently seeing just how easy it is for a new government to pick up the oppressive tools the "good" government was using "restraint" with and put them to worse ends.
On the other hand, I'll freely admit that distros *do* need a way to shield themselves from liability right now. The clear (to me; IANAL) correct solution is to say on your website "don't download this OS if you're in a jurisdiction where it's not legal for us to provide it."). Assuming this does put you in the clear liability-wise, it has several positive effects:
- Stops zero people from downloading it.
- Makes it clear that your project will not collaborate with fascists/oppressive regime enjoyers.
- Means that when the next law makes verifying user ages mandatory (and/or explicitly requires using Palantir-adjacent services to do so) you've already got a strategy in place and there's no need for a "debate" in your "community" about compliance.
- Gets users more practice with "the law is malicious/needlessly bureaucratic/oppressive; let's ignore it" which to be honest people in general clearly desperately need at this point.
- Is the most effective political move if you want to resist the way things are going. Forcing the other side to explain why "California bans Linux" is good rhetorical strategy. Make *them* try to explain "well it's actually not so harmful since we let users set it themselves" and answer your follow-up "but what if next year the requirements change; I just refuse to go along with this slippery slope stuff and I'm not bothered if that means you want to *ban* me."

Abstract: The rapid growth of dockless bike-sharing systems has generated massive spatio-temporal datasets useful for fleet allocation, congestion reduction, and sustainable mobility. Bike demand, however, depends on several external factors, making traditional time-series models insufficient. Centralized Machine Learning (CML) yields high-accuracy forecasts but raises privacy and bandwidth issues when data are distributed across edge devices. To overcome these limitations, we propose Bikelution, an efficient Federated Learning (FL) solution based on gradient-boosted trees that preserves privacy while delivering accurate mid-term demand forecasts up to six hours ahead. Experiments on three real-world BSS datasets show that Bikelution is comparable to its CML-based variant and outperforms the current state-of-the-art. The results highlight the feasibility of privacy-aware demand forecasting and outline the trade-offs between FL and CML approaches.

The idea behind this comes from the intro to Ostrom's Governing the Commons. She points out that the Tragedy of the Commons happens when actors can be modeled as prisoners with no coordination. By increasing communication, we can create opportunities to shift away from the tragedy. Today, the climate crisis is very much a grand Tragedy of the Commons problem. A solution would be to build a (bottom up) coordinated carbon budget, and a community like described could be a low effort first step towards that.

Made new test prints on some off-cuts, using a slightly stronger developer solution than usual to see impact on max. depth. The main image (Eagle Creek, Oregon) is using 18% sodium acetate (curve corrected negative), the test strips are of 20% and 15% solutions (both uncorrected). The phone capture doesn't really show the differences too well, but I think I will go for the 18-20% from now on...

A Novel Explicit Filter for the Approximate Deconvolution in Large-Eddy Simulation on General Unstructured Grids: A posteriori tests on highly stretched grids

Abstract: Explicit filters play a pivotal role in the scale separation and numerical stability of advanced Large Eddy Simulation (LES) closures, such as dynamic eddy-viscosity or Approximate Deconvolution (AD) methods. In the present study, it is demonstrated that the performance of commonly used explicit filters applicable to general unstructured grids highly depends on the grid configuration, specifically the cell aspect ratio, which can result in poor filter spectral properties, ultimately leading to large errors and even solution divergence. This study introduces a novel, efficient explicit filter for general unstructured grids, addressing this shortcoming through a combination of a face-averaging technique and recursive filtering. The filter parameters are then determined through a constrained multi-objective optimization, ensuring desirable spectral properties, including high-wavenumber attenuation, filter-width precision, filter stability and positivity, and minimized dispersion and commutation errors. The AD-LES of turbulent channel flow benchmarks using the new filter demonstrate a noticeable improvement in turbulent flow predictions on highly stretched boundary-layer-type grids, particularly in reducing the log-layer mean velocity profile mismatch, compared to simulations using conventional filters. The analyses show that this enhancement is mainly attributed to the sufficient level of attenuation near the Nyquist wavenumber achieved by the new filter in all spatial directions across various grid configurations, among others. The new filter was also successfully tested on unstructured prism grids for the 3D Taylor-Green vortex benchmark.
