The evening train between Malaga and Madrid derailed and hit a train coming from Madrid to Huelva, another southern Spanish city, according to Adif.

Continuing in the process of measuring the speed of my turntable in the oddest way; here is the FFT before and after oiling & replacing it's belt. Hmm, it's clearly a bit fast before and a bit slow after; it's not got any speed adjustment mechanism, it's a belt on an AC driven motor.
This FFT and plot was done using #labplot using the waveforms gathered by

A set of 4 graphs, labelled Pre oil 1, Pre oil2, Post Oil1, Post oil2, with a horizontal axis of frequency, peaking at about 35Hz, a marker line at 35.55 Hz shows the pre are just faster, and the post a bit slower.

PCIe any% speedrun, day 6: Almost at minimum-viable-baseline-happy-path status!
It's still 2.5 GT/s only, I haven't implemented up-negotiation to 5 GT/s speed yet (or tested that on the SoC side for that matter).
Configuration reads and writes work; they're translated to APB bus transactions and bridged to an APB register block that reports a bunch of hard coded default values and lets you change a few things like BARs.

We won't know the causes for weeks yet. However, it's a reminder that all risks do increase with speed. The derailment of the first train, into the path of the second, seems to have happened very shortly before arrival of the second, with no time for even the most sophisticated system to stop it.

Seeing the discussion, I’d like to clarify:
This post is not a statement on #nuclear energy. I was responding to the specific article that I shared, where @… reported that tech companies are “using AI to speed up the construction of new nuclear power plants.”
My point is - cutting corners and trying to “speed up” the construction or operation of nuclear power plants can have CATASTROPHIC effects.
Chernobyl was a disaster of mismanagement, cost cutting, and insufficient safety procedures.
I do not trust AI, a technology that is notoriously probabilistic and inconsistent in outputs (and with famously high error rates) to be reliable and competent for a use case where the risks are this high.
I also do not support the mindset of wanting to “speed up” ANY regulatory processes and safety checks when it comes to constructing nuclear power infrastructure.
Licensing is not a “bottleneck” here. It’s a safety prerogative.
(Thanks @… for bringing this to my attention!)

There's a word at the beginning and end of Dawn of Everything that feels self-referential right now: Kairos.
> We began this book with a quote which refers to the Greek notion of kairos as one of those occasional moments in a society’s history when its frames of reference undergo a shift – a metamorphosis of the fundamental principles and symbols, when the lines between myth and history, science and magic become blurred – and, therefore, real change is possible. Philosophers sometimes like to speak of ‘the Event’ – a political revolution, a scientific discovery, an artistic masterpiece – that is, a breakthrough which reveals aspects of reality that had previously been unimaginable but, once seen, can never be unseen. If so, kairos is the kind of time in which Events are prone to happen.
> Societies around the world appear to be cascading towards such a point. This is particularly true of those which, since the First World War, have been in the habit of calling themselves ‘Western’. On the one hand, fundamental breakthroughs in the physical sciences, or even artistic expression, no longer seem to occur with anything like the regularity people came to expect in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yet at the same time, our scientific means of understanding the past, not just our species’ past but that of our planet, has been advancing with dizzying speed. Scientists in 2020 are not (as readers of mid-twentieth-century science fiction might have hoped) encountering alien civilizations in distant star systems; but they are encountering radically different forms of society under their own feet, some forgotten and newly rediscovered, others more familiar, but now understood in entirely new ways.
Reading this as I write something very inspired by this work feels especially serendipitous, especially at this time. When they wrote the book, I think that kairos felt more serendipitous itself. But as the frequency of opportunity increases, the veil between realities feels more malleable... that perhaps we can poke a finger through and open a portal to a completely different future than the one we've felt locked into for such a long time.

Many years ago I was working with a friend to find a bug in a Makefile generator. We had a megabyte or so of Makefile we needed to examine. He was an emacs user. It took him minutes just to open the file. I was using sam. It took about a second for sam to load, and I found the problem before he'd even finished loading the file.
The speed of tools matters, and big files are common nowadays. Things should stay fast as their workload grows. That goes double for interactive tools.
By the way, it still takes me 30 seconds to log in to my bank. I wonder how long it will take when it's an LLM-generated landing page.

I bought a fan with a speed controller. It seem to use 5V PWM. Sending my own PWM, ~8% is the lowest speed. Below that it shuts off. But I want slower still.
I'm surprised this isn't a brushed DC motor or universal motor - it uses a BLDC motor.
I suspect the easiest route will be replacing with a

I'm a fan of holding people (and companies) accountable so today when a company truck sped around me when I dared to actually drive within the speed limit I made a point to contact the company and complain.
Sure, there's a chance nothing will happen but it won't stop me from trying. If I see bad behavior I will call it out.

With astonishing speed, the administration has toppled the most cherished pillars of a free society.
And as you know: It’s all going to get much, much worse.

In keeping with a brief return to my telecom/cable/satellite/media analysis roots, my latest piece commissioned by TechTarget takes a look at how AI is being integrated into 5G, mostly to push more compute power down to more devices.
Many thanks to Scott Lawrence of Verizon Business, Joe Madden of Mobile Experts, and the utterly delightful Ray Liu of Origin AI for their insights.

Egypt is building three lines of high speed railways over 2000km. Meanwhile, in Canada, we are still ‘thinking' about building our first 1000km line. Maybe. If we talk nice to the rail tycoons.

VILA: Breaking into transport museums. When the Federation banned all leisure transport, they went in for stealing anything on wheels or could fly. They were speed crazy, and I do mean crazy.
AVON: Speed is the key. Find the Space Rats and we find Dr. Plaxton. That's exactly what we're going to do.

"5 Tricks to Make Your Run Faster, Healthier and More Fun"
The grumpy old man in me hates the clickbait-y title, but it's an otherwise nice overview of different types of runs (tempo, strides, progression, etc.) and their intent. I wish I had something like this when I was starting out.

The biggest surprise of Donald Trump’s first year back in office is 🆘 how quickly America’s institutions capitulated to
“the bully”,
said Michael Steele, a former chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) turned arch critic.
But with the midterm elections for Congress looming, Steele predicts a resounding Democratic victory
amid a hunger among voters to hold the president and his allies accountable for threatening democracy.
Steele, 67, was the first Blac…

New York City has imposed a 15mph speed limit on ebikes.
I'm not worried though, because where I live I bike on a street with a 25mph speed limit and cars routinely go 30mph or faster.
I know this because I bike on the road at 25mph and cars go flying past me.
So if they don't enforce it for cars are they really gonna enforce it for bikes?

Can somebody explain why MLC/TLC/QLC flash is apparently slower to write than SLC?
it seems to me that if you're PAM4/PAM8/PAM16-ing the same amount of data across less bitcells you should get *higher* write speed. Why is MLC not double the write throughput of SLC?

a badly led and mostly destroyed intelligence infrastructure
fails to prevent a major terrorist attack
and that attack is then used as justification to speed up the fascism.
