Last year global temperatures were 1.6°C over the pre-industrial average, the first year to breach the 1.5° goal.
"One or two years that exceed 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level does not imply that the Paris Agreement has been breached. However, with the current rate of warming at more than 0.2°C per decade, the probability of breaching the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement within the 2030s is highly likely."

This month, the Network Performing Arts Production Workshop (NPAPW) 2025 brought together performing artists, technologists, educators, and students from around the world.
A joint initiative of GÉANT and Internet2, NPAPW25 explored what happens when creativity meets advanced networks.
From history of network-enabled performances to MVTP uses cases, and the distributed concert linking New York & Miami, it was a success.

These are the photos for my 2026 calendar. Got the proofs today. Should have the hard copies in 2 weeks. Always agonizing to pick 13 of my photos for the next one. The last few years I’ve had to use older ones too. I don’t get out to shoot as much anymore. I’m hoping that will improve. I’ve volunteered to be a photographer for the city park dept. I’ll take pics of people engaged in the parks and activities, and whatever else I see.

Composite of 12 photos I’ve selected for my 2026 calendar. In order the pictures are:
January - a house finch in a tree
February - a coyote standing looking at the photographer (me)
March - sunrise over mountains
April - 3 days-old goslings in weeds
May - a catbird in a tree
June - scenic view of mountains, clouds, rain, and sunlight
July - closeup of a Mariposa Lily
August - closeup of a prickly poppy
September - head and shoulders of an elk cow
October - a blue heron taking flight
November - …

Work on the approximately $26.45 million
San Jose Creek Multipurpose Path Project in Goleta began last week.
The 3-mile path will serve as a direct link from Calle Real to Old Town businesses, and the Atascadero Creek Bikeway that also allows access to Goleta Beach Park, UC Santa Barbara and the city of Santa Barbara.
The path is set to be completed by spring 2027

San Franciscans! Here's a petition you can sign asking Mayor Lurie and the board of supervisors to fund social housing. You might have seen the flyers around the city.
We voted to fund it with 2020's Prop I, but for obscure reasons of state law, the use of the revenue wasn't legally binding, only intended. And then-Mayor Breed refused to do it. But we can fund it now!

It's frustrating to see such high turnover in the city planning office. I encourage the city to take the complaints of its exiting planners more seriously and put greater effort into their retention. It shouldn't be taking this long to get form-based zoning in place. We could have hundreds more units in place by now if our planners were allowed to simply do their jobs.

PS: "Banoie" in Basque means "I'm leaving" in the dialect of Bizkaia.

Vista creada con IA
“Banoie" is not a Basque word; the most likely intended word is baino, which means "than" in comparative sentences, or it could be a misspelling of the French city of Bayonne, known in Basque as Baiona.

"Baino" (Basque)
* Meaning: "than"
* Usage: Used in comparative phrases, for example, "bigger than" or "better

I've been thinking about the idea of building a new house instead of buying a new house in a few year. A lot of the homes in the neighborhood are at the back of the lot (right up against the alley). You keep the old house where it is, get the city to call in an Accessory Dwelling Unit, and then build a new house in the front of the lot.

German has a unique problem: the default noun for any job is male. Every effort to include the female or neutral form is fought tooth and nail by conservative parties. So when a mayor was forced to remove the mention of both genders in the statute for firefighters.... he kept just the female form of every job title 😈
"That's not what we meant!" the city council is now crying. "Not every person is female, after all!" they lament without noticing the irony.

Good Morning #Canada
In 1882, Lieutenant-Governor Dewdney acquired land adjacent to the route of the future CPR line at a site known as Pile-of-Bones. He then announced that this featureless site, distinguished only by collections of bison bones, would be the new capital of the North West Territories in western Canada. Thus, Regina was born out of a national scandal and conflict of interest. It became the provincial capital when Saskatchewan officially joined Canada in 1905. The North West Mounted Police were headquartered in Regina, starting in 1885, and the city remains as a training centre for the RCMP. Regina survived a cyclone in 1916 and a great depression riot in 1935. Recently, they recovered from a marketing faux pas when they canceled their tourism slogan, "Regina: The City That Rhymes With Fun."

Good Morning #Canada
In July 1871, the City of Victoria officially became the capital of British Columbia, when the province joined the rest of Canada. At the time, the city was larger than Vancouver and had served as the most important settlement in the area for decades. The Colony of Vancouver Island also stamped their little feet and demanded that Victoria be designated as the capital in return for the island to join with the mainland to become part of Canada. Captain James Cook was the first British person to set foot on Vancouver Island in 1778, and in 1843, Fort Victoria was established by the Hudson's Bay Company. There is a long history of Vancouver Island serving as a naval base, and today, Victoria is the home of Canada’s Pacific Coast naval and military headquarters in nearby Esquimalt. Victoria is a top tourist destination and is regularly rated top 5 worldwide as an awesome place to live.

Good Morning #Canada
#HappyBirthday to Bat Masterson, the famous American gunslinger who was born near Henryville Quebec in 1853. He's our segue to another #CanadianCapitals post, naturally about Quebec City. Explorer Samuel de Champlain founded the French settlement in 1608 and adopted the Algonquin name, which means "where the river narrows." Quebec City is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. The ramparts surrounding Old Quebec (Vieux-Québec) are the only fortified city walls remaining in the Americas north of Mexico. Those walls were put to good use as Québec spent the next 170 years fighting off invaders, mostly by the British but also by Americans. The city was established as the capital of Canada under British rule in 1792 and was named the provincial capital in 1867 when Canada East became Quebec.

Sutro Nursery Plant Sale. Hand-drawn propped cardboard sign with art of orange and yellow flowers, one with a purple butterfly resting on top.
Two gallon pots of wallflower and several thin deep pots of buckwheat in a bike bag. None are in bloom currently, it’s just green leaves.

I'm currently reading The Long Heat by Wim Carton and Andreas Malm and highly recommend it. Do not be daunted by the page count of 704 pages. It has so many notes at the back, without back matter it's only ~420 pages. Hard to read emotionally, though. It paints a stark picture of earth's near future and the massive destruction of human and other-than-human life ahead, and the insane brinkmanship of elite consensus.

Nice new accessible trail in #McLarenPark from Mansell Promenade to John F. Shelley Promenade. No more need to loop around up a steep hill on Shelley to get to the part with the great views west.

Paved path branching off the Mansell Promenade, itself a wide paved path with designated areas for walking and for biking in each direction.
Path continues, curving around higher ground on the left. Cut tree branches lie in a barren area to the right of the path, a tree is off to the left.
Path continues and meets up with another paved path, turning right to the road (Shelley Promenade).
Path ends onto Shelley Promenade with a curb ramp. To the right, Shelley descends a steep hill.
