Why is everything on the cloud these days?
I’m kind of getting tired of every piece of professional and business software being a SaaS or cloud-based solution these days.
I have a good computer, it can run a lot of complex programs on it locally. I wish I had the option to do so.
Not everything needs to be synced 24/7. And I’d much rather have some tools include a cloud sync functionality that backs up changes with some kind of regular frequency for version control and cross-device access, but otherwise runs on my device.
These days, when I’m trying to go work somewhere without an internet connection or am traveling and have spotty data - I can’t access 90% of my work. Files don’t back up locally even when there’s a native desktop client app. Why?
It feels wasteful, sending so much data to the internet and back with constantly required online sync and web apps.
I feel nostalgic now, remembering the days of software that would require buying a license every couple of years, that would run on your device and could be accessed even from the top of a remote mountain if you wished, and that didn’t log you out every other week.

The short version of my larger soapbox here is that a lot of the hand-wringing and hair-pulling about e-bikes, novel UPS delivery thingers, Those Darned Kids tearing down the sidewalk on scooters, etc. is at its root not about the vehicles, but about infrastructure.
We need vastly more and better infrastructure — physical, legal, and social — for vehicles that are:
- zero-emission (which currently means human- and electric-powered)
- of limited mass (just how much could it harm a pedestrian?)
- traveling in the 10-20mph range

Honestly we should invent a system of notifications that works good but that isn’t invasive enough to make you unwilling open a notification that arrives while your finger is just traveling to the screen to press a button on the top of an app.

SMS verifications while traveling internationally are painful. Whatever happened to email?

I've been trying to explain to somewhat car-brained people that honest to gosh, people on bikes are actually good at not running into things, most of them DO wait for green lights, etc, and every so often I manage to collect some illustrative video. This one is notable because in the space of 5 seconds 4 bikes pass through the same not-wide space, traveling in different directions, and it just happens, no big deal, but I fear they could not get past the "chaos!"

I watched Multiple Maniacs last night for the first time (I don't recommend it 😂). Although I love John Waters films and I've seen most/all of them at this point, Multiple Maniacs' plot was kinda everywhere alongside its clear shock intentions. Pink Flamingos came out just two years later in 1972, was in color, features basically all the same actors, and unbelievably, Pink Flamingos is the more coherent and cohesive film 😂🤣

I haven't visited the U.S. since January 2020 (business travel prior to retirement), but my social media commentary, like the example above, means I won't be traveling there anytime soon. I'm likely to be "disappeared" once they get access to my phone.
Thankfully, I'm not remotely interested in going there.
