But how can I possibly excise what I learned from a single paper, during the process of reading across many papers to build my mental understanding of a field? That’s not how people work – we don’t keep track of the provenance of each bit of information that gets consolidated into our knowledge. It may well be that every word I read/learned was correct – I just have no way of verifying that.

Even worse, now I have to try to “forget” what I might have learned and already incorporated into my knowledge base from this paper, which (let’s be honest here) was refreshingly easier to read than most of everything else I’ve been finding so far. It’s one thing to look at what AI-generated text cites and confirm that it’s true (or not) from a citation.

I’ve already done my complaining about the theoretical harms of AI-generated papers in the literature, but this one felt personal. This is my time that’s been wasted now, because I can’t cite this paper as a source. I have to go find some other literature that describes the science I was trying to explain, and it has to be something that I (a person with general expertise but not deep subject knowledge) and a similar audience can understand without having to work too hard.
