Welp, that’s a first: I had to actually break the glass in case of fire.
This evening, I used a fire extinguisher on a brush fire that had started near a house just three doors down from our beach rental. The owners weren’t home, and if it hadn’t been stopped, it easily could’ve taken the house with it.
Neighbors came running, the kids were thrilled by the whole thing, and I’m still kind of buzzing.

"The administration’s claims to monarchical power are a real threat to America’s constitutional order. But its executive orders and policy feints are so haphazard and poorly articulated that they amount to a kind of autocratic takeover written in smudge-able crayon: terrifying, cartoonish, and vulnerable to erasure, all at once.
This is not to say that Americans should ignore Trump’s efforts to make confetti of the Constitution. Rather, when evaluating any one Trump policy, one has to keep front of mind the possibility that it simply won’t exist by the end of the week. Despite an energetic effort by some right-wing intellectuals to make Trump out to be some kind of 14-dimensional-chess player, his approach doesn’t resemble chess so much as a denial-of-service attack on a functioning government."

So farewell then to Nchuti. He has been great, sad to see him go. Probably he left because who knows if there'll even be a show next year. Actors can't be refusing work to be on a series that might not even happen.
Except Billie I guess? Maybe she's not otherwise busy.
No more episodes till maybe xmas 2026 they say? Or maybe some specials next year? Please god we don't have to wait until spring 2027 to know what's happening here?!
Meanwhile the fans are all like, "oh it says 'and introducing' instead of 'as the doctor'". Heh. They want it to be a switcheroo of some kind and she's not really The Doctor, but I want to see Billie's Tennant impression for at least a three year stretch.
She's likely just be staring in a couple of specials in the gap to a proper new season I'd expect. Probably regenerate again before there's a full series. Excited to see her David Tenant impression though. 😆

To give some examples:
When police get vastly differential results at investigating crimes against some groups (e.g., Black women) vs. others (e.g., white men), that's malcompetence. Probably plenty of simple malice involved too, and probably the whole gamut of mechanisms I mentioned in the last post are involved here.
Another example, from my own experience: when I stumble over the names of my non-white students but pronounce my white students' names flawlessly, that's malcompetence on my part, because the net effect of my selective incompetence is to make some students feel less welcome in my classroom, which hurts their learning. I'm my case, the reasons for the incompetence are not conscious nor (I think) unconscious malice, but instead a differential capability picked up from a certain kind of upbringing and then (sometimes) insufficiently mitigated by capability-building effort. Because of how I grew up, my ability to pronounce different names is biased (this is true of everyone in the world; most people don't have a classroom instructor position that causes it to matter so much). When I'm successful at mitigating my malcompetence, I use practice time with student intro videos to pare down my competence gap for the specific students in my class. This is time consuming (several hours per week for the first few weeks of classes) and I'm sad to admit that I don't always invest that time. But it's a great example of malcompetence because I have a introspective access to it.

Krugman outlines a constellation of possible causes around a core theme: extreme uncertainty.
“What does a business do in the face of this kind of uncertainty? It tries to avoid making commitments that it may soon regret.”
Krugman tries to tie it all to Trump’s recent actions, which is dubious: the post-college job market has been crap since 2022 or 2023; Krugman’s own graph suggests it started worsening circa 2018. The larger theme of uncertainty, however, fits that timeframe.
