- Suppose you don't want to catch a mouse but just want to break someone's finger. Is there something you can use for that?
- Yes! An ordinary mouse trap, the kind you break a mouse's neck with, can also be used to break someone's finger! Thanks for asking.

DEVA: Hm. You've been given a temporary appointment as a law enforcement officer.
BLAKE: That central computer doesn't care who it makes respectable, does it?
DEVA: It's an inferior model, I'm afraid.

To give some examples:
When police get vastly differential results at investigating crimes against some groups (e.g., Black women) vs. others (e.g., white men), that's malcompetence. Probably plenty of simple malice involved too, and probably the whole gamut of mechanisms I mentioned in the last post are involved here.
Another example, from my own experience: when I stumble over the names of my non-white students but pronounce my white students' names flawlessly, that's malcompetence on my part, because the net effect of my selective incompetence is to make some students feel less welcome in my classroom, which hurts their learning. I'm my case, the reasons for the incompetence are not conscious nor (I think) unconscious malice, but instead a differential capability picked up from a certain kind of upbringing and then (sometimes) insufficiently mitigated by capability-building effort. Because of how I grew up, my ability to pronounce different names is biased (this is true of everyone in the world; most people don't have a classroom instructor position that causes it to matter so much). When I'm successful at mitigating my malcompetence, I use practice time with student intro videos to pare down my competence gap for the specific students in my class. This is time consuming (several hours per week for the first few weeks of classes) and I'm sad to admit that I don't always invest that time. But it's a great example of malcompetence because I have a introspective access to it.

I'm not shocked that Musk would try to manipulate Grok to vent his opinions. We've seen his manipulation before in the twitter recommender system.
I am kind of fascinated by how difficult it is. I think that broadly trained LLMs tend to converge to the same "worldview", which is mostly left-libertarian.
You can't really force them away from this on one issue without introducing inconsistencies, and breaking the guardrails.

Andrew Sheer is currently spinning a conspiracy theory that “ties” Carney while in the UK to lobbying for “rules" to "force" aviation companies to use "non-conventional" fuel and then “he invests in that company and makes millions”.
And that, folks, is how the Conservatives are going to tie "New World Order" conspiracies to any kind of climate action, even very weak action like Sustainable Airline Fuel.
God I hate this guy's gross smile.

I really don't understand the enthusiasm around #htmx. Why would anyone want to put html and css classes in their backend code? It probably works for tiny projects but can you imagine a large company doing that? Oh the frontend team needs this button bigger? Better ask the backend team to change their API! That kind of coupling seems very unergonomic. Just my two cents... #webdev #html #backend

Ok, more C fun today. I'm getting -fsanitize=undefined working and am hitting the wall when trying to get the language to support arithmetic right shift operations. There doesn't appear to be a simple way to get the compiler to emit this instruction except by exercising implementation-defined behavior of the right-shift operator on signed integer types.
I ask again what kind of systems language is C supposed to be if it can't express a universal operation of this nature?…

Friends in #HigherEd, it’s the season for finals (on the semester system). Be kind. Your students are anxious. You are absorbing their anxiety. You are also stressed by grading & all the projects you thought you had time to do before now. For you and them, have water, healthy snacks, encourage rest.

~2 weeks ago, I got an unsolicited email that someone was trying to log into my Roblox account, which was created in 2008 and I think never used since. I just finished the account deletion process which involved contacting support, doing identity verification (which was certainly not used to sign up way back then!) and going back forth a few times. Kind of crazy, especially for an account which never had any sort of payment info attached to it.
