I generally hate buying new computing devices and try to make them last as long as possible. I bought a used/refurb iPad 5th Gen in 2022 for $199 and got 2 years of solid use before I upgraded to a 6th Gen in 2024 (for $170) so I could use an Apple Pencil.
I then put the old 5th Gen on my trainer bike as a video player and it still works great.
But sadly, two years in the 6th Gen now has dead spots on the screen. I may need to replace it.

Found an old power bill while cleaning up. In the end of 2018 I was paying 9.05 c/kWh for the first 600 kWh and 10.94 above.
Now it's 15.1 and 17.0.
The rate of increase was very much nonlinear though: from October 2018 to October 2024 (six years) the tier 1 rate only climbed by 27%.
It went up 10.5% in 2024 and 20.7% in 2025 alone.

Bansal, Cheriyan, Grout, and Ibrahimpur (arXiv:2209.11209, Algorithmica 2024) showed that the WGMV primal-dual algorithm, due to Williamson, Goemans, Mihail, and Vazirani (Combinatorica, 1995), achieves approximation ratio $16$ for the Cover Small Cuts problem; their analysis uses the notion of a pliable family of sets that satisfies a combinatorial property.
