This type of reasoning is always baffling to me. When climate change is discussed these people always say that there is some magical technological solution that will pop up to save us (usually handed to us by the AI gods).
Why then, in the the several decades that it takes to scale up nuclear, can we not account for the possibility that AI could become more energy efficient?
That sounds like something you could solve for the cost of a few power plants...

One aspect of copyright is you may be licensed to have a copy of a file, but that doesn't grant the right to sub-license. So, technically, you can't use a service to transfer that file or (often) store it on cloud services - because they usually require you grant a perpetual license.
In practice this has been ignored as nobody expected it to be an issue.
Maybe until the question of AI training?

A little tip to all those folks using Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud: you're paying ~ 20x more than you need to be paying. If you claim you're using 'special services only provided by __insert name of ripoff cloud provider here__' then you've got your organisation locked into a single provider with the inability to move to a better one. Consider your options very carefully & build vendor-agnostic systems. Dependence on

Cloud-Based Interoperability in Residential Energy Systems
Darren Leniston, David Ryan, Ammar Malik, Jack Jackman, Terence O'Donnell
arxiv.org/abs/2506.05076

The move to Windows 11 isn’t just about security updates.
It increases dependence on Microsoft through aggressive cloud integration,
forcing users to adopt Microsoft accounts and services.
It also leads to higher costs due to subscription and licensing models,
and reduces control over how your computer works and how your data is managed.
Furthermore, new hardware requirements will render millions of perfectly good PCs obsolete.
This is a turning point.

In Europe and other regions we have laws mandating that electronic devices must be properly labelled with information about their energy consumption and some other externalities...
We should demand equivalent or at least similar measures for commercially distributed software, same for cloud services.
It would be a fun experience for us, software devs, being forced to acknowledge how terribly bad is the software we create.
We should be held accountable.
