The BBC (and other news orgs) claim they are respectable journalism organizations. Yet they put this crap on the top of their frontpages *above* the news.
Like... do they not go to their own webpage and wonder if this might reflect poorly or is the 0.02c/click worth it?

A screenshot from www.bbc.com/news shows the BBC logo at the top, with two layers of menu bars below. Immediately below the menus is a large banner ad with a clickbait picture of the actor Owen Wilson with the headline: “From Stardom to Struggle: The downfall of once-mighty celebrities.”

Below that is the word “NEWS” with the day’s headlines and articles.

I am loving the story of Road & Track taking down a fantastic article on Formula 1 and failing to provide any suitable explanation for doing so. The article is a wonderful piece of sports journalism, and if the aim is to expand the audience for F1, it achieves its goal. Road & Track is now experiencing the Streisand Effect in full. Anyway, I recommend reading the article (which is on the Internet Archive of course):

There are commercial reasons why some newsrooms focus on spectacle and confrontation
– the old journalism adage of “if it bleeds, it leads” still prevails in many newsroom decisions.
For the initial weeks of the campus protests, this penchant for sensationalism has shown up in the focus on chaos, clashes and arrests.
But it is a decision that delegitimizes protest aims.
