“They embody all of us – all of Ukraine.” – Zelensky's address on Armed Forces Day: benborges.xyz/2025/12/06/they-

Stock market hits all-time high as Dow closes above 50,000
The U.S. stock market ended a bumpy week with a bang,
as the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 50,000 for the first time.

The Dow crossed the threshold
— an important psychological barrier
— earlier Friday before retreating
and then surging again to close at 50,115.67.

That was a jump of 2.47 percent, more than 1,200 points for the day.

The rally extended to the S&P 500 and the …

I applied the three finger salute to the two pieces of software that is not responsive after two hours. We used to have semi-decent software, but lately the piss-poor upgrades and AI SLOP has infected the "productivity" software. I could update 5 documents, generate PDF for each and rebuild the release folder index in one day or a day and a half if the VPN was slow. All I got done (day 2 of frustration) was three of the smallest documents, on the midsize document it choked and I…

Beautiful night in the woods. It didn't rain at all and we woke up to an awesome sunrise instead of the pouring rain we usually get. I'm not used to packing up my shelter and having it be dry.
Should be a good day of training.

Full moon lighting up a cloudy sky at night. A line of tall evergreens form the horizon to the left, with a tall 3-phase transmission tower silhouetted against the sky above the trees
Wispy pink morning clouds above a tree line in an evergreen forest, seen just before sunrise
Two parallel rows of 3-phase transmission towers, one of single poles and one of large steel trusses, disappearing into the distance from a viewpoint on a gravel road roughly in line with the left row.

Nor my beloved as an idol show,
Since all alike my songs and praises be

Still constant in a wondrous excellence;
Therefore my verse to constancy confined,
One thing expressing, leaves out difference.

A one minute first person video of a person walking on a narrow path along the edge (approx. 100 meters above) of a stunning, narrow canyon, surrounded by 3000+ meter tall mountains. The path is partially bridged by short boardwalk sections and secured via steel ropes running along the rocks. The slopes down are covered in dense grass and bush vegetation and some Swiss pines. This one took a smidge more thought as I can't abuse `zip` to rotate 2D sequences. However, just rewrote the rotation as a proc and used that. Instead of `reduce`, it was all `foldl`, and I fought with `char` vs `string` due to some of the processing operations between the normal and cephalopod problem processing.
Overall, definitely a fun solve.

Totally normal problems.
So one day I had trouble zipping my winter jacket; around the final teeth, the zipper would stop catching. And when I tried again, I couldn't zip anything at all. Finally, at nth careful attempt it finally worked, and I had no more trouble that day. When I've turned, we looked at it, and decided that a loose thread must have gotten into it while zipping. Cut the thread off.
Next day, the zipper worked just fine in the morning. However, when I was about to leave the train, it suddenly stopped working. It seemed that I'm up for a cold day in unzipped jacket, but it finally caught a few minutes later, on the road. This time, I suspected the zipper. Tightened it, it started working again.
Today, I've tried zipping it three times to make sure it really works. And of course, as soon as I arrived at the destination, it refused to zip. I've tried again while walking, and it fell apart completely. Fortunately, the wind stopped blowing, and walking on snow was hard enough to jumpstart my metabolism fast. Finally, I've replaced the zipper and now everything works.
I wonder what tomorrow holds…

Finished "The Memory Collectors" by Dete Meserve.
A company has developed technology to transport your consciousness into your past, but only for one hour and without any precision as to when. Some go to see a lost loved one. Others to briefly escape the pain of future traumas.
Four strangers find themselves marooned on the same day and begin to discover a connection.
Strong start but devolves into an all too neat saccharine finish.

today was a totally grey day. Very low hanging clouds. Actually a superb inversion -- if I would have had the time for a walk to the mountains. Yet other topics were on my schedule for today.
But hey, this is what photos are for: having memories about good time, right? I wrote more about it here:

A stunning panoramic view unfolds under a bright, clear sky, where the sun shines brilliantly, casting a warm glow over a picturesque valley. The sun's rays create a starburst effect, adding a magical touch to the scene. Below, a lush valley stretches out, filled with a patchwork of green fields, dense forests, and scattered clusters of buildings, all bathed in soft morning or late afternoon light.

In the distance, a range of majestic mountains rises, their peaks partially shrouded in a light …

Once I pulled my head out of my ass this wasn't horrible. Part 1 was straightforward, decided to do some set stuff and managed to get it right the first time. Part 2 made my brain hurt a bit because all of the ideas that came to me were very, very slow and memory intensive. Then decided to scrap it and just do what the directions told me to do: count the paths...so I replaced the dumb with a dictionary which was so much better as an idea.

I think the root of the “AI” evil is when AI researchers in the 1960s recognized that they outrageously underestimated the complexity of the human mind.
They became humiliated by their promises that AGI was just a few years away—and then went full goblin mode that’s lasting to this day.
Some of the OG researchers took it quite badly that they stalled and weren’t in the limelight anymore.
‣ Marvin Minsky (co-founder of MIT AI lab and arguably the most important early AI bro) went on to visit Epstein’s island multiple times.
‣ Karl Steinbuch, who came up with the German term for computer science ("Informatik")—who also was a literal Nazi (and likely war criminal) in World War II—later wrote articles in ultra-right magazines about things like “equal rights rob women of their children”.
‣ John McCarthy (inventor of Lisp, co-authored document that coined the term “Artificial Intelligence”) was a staunch Republican who years later claimed (in a serious article) that “thermostats have beliefs”.
[one moment, I am receiving more information]
‣ There’s a second Epstein Island AI pioneer? Who also was Chief Learning Officer at… Trump University? That would be Roger Schank (founded one of the first AI companies in the 1980s AI boom, it even had an IPO. Of course the 1980s AI bubble burst).
Obviously all of the above received all the awards in computer science and are very revered people.

Managed charging of EVs (called 'smart charging' in Europe) could save California $5 - 18 billion on distribution grid upgrades by 2040. Increased electrification (transport, buildings) offsets increased infrastructure costs by -0.2-4.5¢/kWh for all.

Graphs show load profiles throughout the day. The text states that in a managed EV charging behaviour scenario, 50% of light-duty and 20% of medium and heavy-duty EVs participate.
Various graphs showing the distribution upgrade costs for 2025-2040 for the three utilities plus combined for different scenarios. The difference in 2040 between the highest scenario and the lowest scenario (managed charging) is approximately 18 billion.

Rule of thumb: End-to-end encryption is meaningless unless you know and control exactly who the ends are. (Let’s call this the Waltz principle.)
Same goes unless the context your encrypted messenger is running in is secure. Signal can encrypt your messages all day long but you’re still screwed if the custom keyboard app you installed on your phone is sending them off to someone else before they even reach Signal.

Living in a capitalist society makes me simultaneously hate and understand some things.
Back when the Sunday shopping ban was set in Poland by one of the right-wing parties (with some exceptions for petty capitalists, of course), I was outraged. Why are they forcing their religious customs on me?! But nowadays, I do realize that in a capitalist society, where employment laws are full of loopholes and employers explicitly punish employees for taking a day off, an obligatory no-business day is the only way.
On top of that, after living next to a supermarket for a few years… this is literally the only way to have a quiet day, without cars driving, and car doors slamming all the time. And of course night time deliveries, because you obviously can't lose day's business over such things.
And what I hate even more are these multi-day holidays and long weekends, where suddenly all my routine falls apart, and I can't really enjoy holidays while the train timetable is randomly punctuated. But then, I do realize that obligatory multi-day holidays are the only way for many people to simultaneously have a day off and be able to meet their families and friends.
I'm not really compatible with the world I'm living in.

Anybody trying to stay #sober, you already know there’s nothing that can’t be made worse by taking a drink. Thanksgiving can be hard, for all the usual reasons, plus the extra ones too. I remind myself, as long as I want to be sober more than I want to be drunk, I’ll be ok. One more day, all I need.🫂

Some of the nation’s top health officials and Donald Trump have cast doubt on a vaccine that doctors call lifesaving.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has repeatedly questioned whether babies should continue to receive the vaccine on their first day of life,
arguing that the disease is mainly transmitted through sexual contact and sharing needles.
But the virus can also pass from mother to child at birth.
In September, Mr. Trump said that he thought children …

…everyone there was white. •Everyone•. This particular park would usually be more white than not, but…this was weird.
There’s officially a city prohibition on ICE setting foot in city parks, but who knows what that’s worth? Those bastards will do anything if they think they can get away with it. And they’ll grab people right off the streets if they’re falling behind quota for the day. Who’d risk that?
ICE had apparently succeeded turning the park into all-white world they dreamed of. It was…creepy.

All the windowed doors up now, though some adjustment of hinges is still needed. Lots of the trim to fake the panels painted. There's struts everywhere.
No work being done tomorrow, two men in on Wednesday and Friday.
He still seems to think it might be finished by the end of the week. I still find myself doubting it.
Very glad to have a day off building and off work and off having to get up in the mornings tomorrow. I can lie in bed until noon if I want for the first time since October I think.

My wife has one of the strangest dietary sensitivities I've ever heard of: dairy *but* only if not freshly opened.
Individually wrapped cheese slices? Fine.
Brick of the same cheese from the same dairy? Fine if eaten immediately after opening the sealed wrapper. The next day an identical serving will make her sick.
Frozen stuff usually seems OK. It doesn't appear to discriminate between types of dairy (cow, goat, sheeps milk all are fine when fresh and not a day lat…

All worry is laid to waste.
The endorphins rushing wild from the freezing water,
the music pounding through my body,
the caffeine,
the fucking ducks and the God-roiling sky
– no what-ifs,
no yeah-buts,
no what-abouts,
no caveats, at all.
I am made happy,
and that happiness is entire and incontestable.
And all the way home, I go
— to my beautiful waking wife
– on this, the best day ever.
Love, Nick Cave

Ha ha — but also note that the 21% figure is itself •generated by an automated tool•:
❝The next day, he got a response from Max Spero, chief executive of Pangram Labs in New York City, which develops tools to detect AI-generated text. Pangram screened all 19,490 studies and 75,800 peer reviews.…Pangram’s analysis revealed that around 21% of the ICLR peer reviews were fully AI-generated, and more than half contained signs of AI use.❞
The word “revealed” is doing way too much work there.
