Russia had previously announced a two-day unilateral ceasefire to mark its 9 May second world war Victory Day on Saturday.
Ukraine previously said that it too had offered a truce but that this had been ignored by Moscow.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, confirmed Trump’s announcement and the prisoner swap on Friday night, writing on Telegram:
“We received Russia’s agreement to conduct a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire regime must also…

Is there a Morgan Freeman GPS voice? I would just drive around all day punching in hard to find places.

I’m sat on a bench in Lincoln Square, Manchester, surrounded by a buzz of expectation.
The Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, is in town for his first day at Number 10 North
-- the government’s new northern base inside Heron House, immediately in front of me.
Police officers are stationed around the square, keeping watch on all the entrances.
In the middle of it all, Abraham Lincoln stands looking out across the square with the weary air of somebody who has seen it all

Apparently it’s National Lighthouse Day, which we learned at the bottom of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. May serendipity always conceal our ignorance.
The lighthouse’s 1 million bricks are being repointed, but you could still climb the 220 steps of this 151 year old tower.

The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, an all brick edifice standing 162’ above ground. Construction is underway to repoint the one million bricks.
Close-up view of a lighthouse lantern house against a clear blue sky. The structure features glass panels and a black metal railing.
Looking up from the base of a spiral metal staircase towards the distant top of the lighthouse. The outer circular walls are made of brick.
Looking east towards the Atlantic, across some marshy weedy low lying areas. The sky is bright blue with white puffy clouds here and there.

I appreciate that content creators need to crank out slop daily to keep Lord Algo from consuming the Earth in fire, but this meme of building washing machines to clean your skunk striped jorts in the Boogaloo has to die. Wind ups, old gas engines, a regular washer with the drum run by a stationary bike, and now this bucket? Just use your fucking hands, dude. Think of all the hours you got back from dumping your shitty commute and your day job. Gotta do something with the time.

Today we have mostly been butchering the bull we killed a fortnight ago.
A long, hard day, but it's done. That's all my meat for a year.
#TheJoyOfCrofting (unironically)

Start of the day — before the rain. The mincer is set up on the table nearer to the camera, most of the other equipment is on the big stainless steel table further away.
Deboning a leg. My friend Phil uses a knife to cut the meat off the bone.
Making mince. There is a tray of steaks to the right. Behind, other parts of the carcass are being dismantled. The rain has started so we have moved everything on to the main table and erected an awning over it.
At the end of the day, everything has been cleaned up and cleared away, but the awning is still over the stainless steel table.

Since it's the 4th of July and also the 250th anniversary of the founding of the USA, a great occasion to remind people that this country has been an especially bad one from start to the present day. Worst atrocities you can imagine, throughout history? The US has participated in all of them. Slavery, genocide and colonialism, systematic war crimes, mass incarceration and concentration camps; you name it the US has done it not just once but multiple times. Now is a great time to rid yourself of patriotism and nationalism if you still have any remaining. That whole spiel about "striving for a more perfect Union"? It's a trap designed to keep you complacent and loyal-enough. Anything good you think was achieved was achieved by *people*, in spite of the nation, not because of it, and *way* too much of that shit is being knocked right back down again at the moment.

I tried to write something up to talk about an idea, but it didn't quite work. I have a lot more I need to put into it. But I want to get an idea out, and, after talking with a person who pointed out some of the flaws in what I wrote, I think I can maybe write down the kernel of the idea here.
An acquaintance of mine did a deep dive on Operational Art and wrote his thesis (which prompted an earlier set of posts and an article I wrote for my professional-ish blog) on the intersection of the OODA loop and critical philosophy. I've been spending a lot of time thinking about Kilcullen's Three Pillars model (after watching Andrewism's wonderful video) and Beer's VSM. The TL;DR of it is that there's a much better insurgency model. Of course, the insurgency model also works for a bunch of other things, because cybernetics lets you do all kinds of cool abstraction like that.
So as I was reading the essay of a comrade the other day, that model popped back into my head and I'm going to try to share what I can of it.
When colonizers came to the Salish region, they saw what they believed to be an untouched wilderness. They failed to see the ways in which Salish people tended the land. Indigenous fire practices were common on the northwest coast, and the suppression of those practices remains a problem. There is an interrelationship between an environment and the systems within it. Systems, like people, animals, and cultures, adapt to the environment. In doing so, those systems will also change the environment.
Social technology was invisible, so colonizers defaulted to either some kind of Rousseauvian or Malthusian model of these people. They were not, for the colonizers, people who had developed advanced social technologies to live in harmony with their world. They were, rather, people in "a state of nature."
The European influenced left continues to draw this Rousseauvian model, which continues through a lot of Anarchist revolutionary thought. European anarchists were heavily influenced by observations and theories around the behavior of indigenous people. The remnants of this thought still exist in the idea that the system must only be destroyed for us to be free.
This is the same obliviousness to social technology, that social technology actually exists, often informs both early colonizers and modern radicals.
It is through this obliviousness that we fail to recognize how capitalism is a social technology that is managed into existence and maintained, and how changes in the environment can threaten institutions that have become over-adapted to a specific version of that environment.
We can extend Kilcullen's metaphor of a "conflict ecosystem" through cybernetics into a much more rich model, populated by viable systems. The ecosystem itself has a fitness function, which drives adaptation within the environment. But all actors in the environment also affect it. Some try to manage the environment. Revolutions are often over who manages a social ecosystem, over who controls the social technology and what it does.
Once we see this dynamic at play, calls of "riot" and "revolution" make a whole lot less sense. Rather, the question becomes, "how do we change the ecosystem in such a way that it cannot be 'managed' at all?"
Graeber/Wengrow talked about Turtle Island indigenous social technologies in Dawn of Everything, such as the system of moieties and clans described in the book. So I have a good reading list as I think through this model, but I hope the "ecosystem" model is helpful (if not completely fleshed out).
I'd be interested in any critiques or thoughts to help develop this idea more.

Another tale of the closed web: a common thing on Instagram is that it doesn't send out Co-Post requests when you do it too often or they don't like you. It's one of the aspects or levels of being “shadowbanned”.
I often work with various kinds of accounts to publish my essays on Instagram to get more exposure. For example, pages dedicated to criticizing the police (useless.cops) or accounts showcasing ICE activity in Minnesota (MNicewatch) for my essay on Renée Good…

A screenshot showing the Instagram info page below a post only shown to its creator reading “useless.cops and 3 others were invited to be collaborators but haven't accepted yet.”
An Instagram conversation between “mypunksdead” where I wrote:

They responded: “No IG notification btw, just so you know.

I responded: “Yeah, I saw. Since that day, no Co post request gets send.”

My takeaways:
1. Don’t even try me with your “both parties are the same” BS.
2. Don’t even try me with your “support all Democrats all the time no matter what” BS.
3. We need to make Democrats a •lot• more afraid of getting primaried.
4. Above all, we need to stop imagining the politicians are the leaders of social change. We need to fight every day, in every place we are, to create a reality where trans people are safe and politicians are scared of casting votes like this before we even target them.

You know those Nazis people were living next to in Germany, back in the day? You’re living next to them right now. And they have those lovely families and the house next door and every day they go to work at corporations that are complicit in genocide. And if you’re wondering what you would have done about it back then… well, you’re doing it now. And, more than likely, it’s exactly what most folks did in Nazi Germany. Which is absolutely fuck all.

From May 4th up until June 28th I had some sort of softball activity every single day, with the exception of something like five days. My oldest daughter made the all-stars for her league, and that was one hell of an experience. Two hours of practice every day Monday through Friday and then playing tournaments Saturday/Sunday. I always wondered how did parents do these things and there we were :) It's a lot, but man, the kids learn and play so much, I think it was worth it.

Erik Uden on Instagram: "Babe, wake up. New man-made horrors beyond comprehension dropped!! In the end of the day, these companies probably realized that, just like with AI, they can somehow use scare tactics to attract venture capital. It's still a horrifying thing to think of, but possibly overblown to get money. The headline of the Science article reads: Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing By restoring some functions to intact brains from deceased donors, the startup Bexorg hopes to create a better drug development test bed for neurodegenerative diseases, written by Sara Reardon, published on the 20th of May 2026. Though, reading this Science article made me think: aren't we the brain? Am I missing something here? Now, of course the devil lies in the detail and the article makes it clear that this startup only restores “some functions”, which is certainly more complex in action than it is in theory written here, but certain language of the article makes me question the author's understanding of what is a human. The article writes: “Just a day ago, the brain was in a living person. Now, hours after its owner died, it sits on a cart draped in tubes [...]” What do you mean “it's owner” — isn't the brain it's owner? Isn't that where it's owner is? I mean, certainly the brain had no more activity, the person must've been declared brain dead by all standards before being sent to this startup, still it's odd hearing someone donated their brain instead of saying they've donated... themselves? Also “using a set of proprietary brain-sustaining machines” is a terrible sentence I always thought the people who don't donate their full body to hospitals are religious lunatics, but this is the first time I wrote something on my organ donor card. They can take my brain, but not as one piece."

Coffee consumption has been linked to a number of health benefits, such as reduced risks of dementia, head and neck cancer, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.
According to data from the U.K. Biobank, a higher intake of coffee was associated with lower risks of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-related mortality.
These associations persisted for both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, and for unsweetened and sweetened coffee.
