Two years ago, I was in South Korea—definitely the highlight of that year. The food was amazing, the winter vibes were perfect, and everything was so affordable.
But for a long time, I’d had Japan on my list. I’ve been checking plane tickets now and then, only to watch the prices climb higher by the minute. Even though flying to Tokyo is just an hour or two longer than flying to Seoul, it’s nearly twice as expensive. So, I decided to go back to South Korea instead.

Imagine ChatGPT but instead of predicting text it just linked you to the to 3 documents most-influential on the probabilities that would have been used to predict that text.
Could even generate some info about which parts of each would have been combined how.
There would still be issues with how training data is sourced and filtered, but these could be solved by crawling normally respecting robots.txt and by paying filterers a fair wage with a more relaxed work schedule and mental health support.
The energy issues are mainly about wild future investment and wasteful query spam, not optimized present-day per-query usage.
Is this "just search?"
Yes, but it would have some advantages for a lot of use cases, mainly in synthesizing results across multiple documents and in leveraging a language model more fully to find relevant stuff.
When we talk about the harms of current corporate LLMs, the opportunity cost of NOT building things like this is part of that.
The equivalent for art would have been so amazing too! "Here are some artists that can do what you want, with examples pulled from their portfolios."
It would be a really cool coding assistant that I'd actually encourage my students to use (with some guidelines).

And this is working, but it's slow progress.
Mastodon in particular has UX problems that will be very hard to overcome that prevent mass adoption, foremost is that actual conversations (aka replies) are unreliable and slow due to the way posts are distributed. Quote post support was a huge first step to remedy this. I hope we'll see more updates on it.
Bluesky got a big chunk of former Twitter users, especially in some niches like for scientists and activists; they have great performance, reliable threading and replies and really amazing featuers like fully custom feeds—but suffer from intransparent moderation and frankly insufferable leadership (still leagues better than Twitter or Facebook though).

The term “yada kenarji” is part of our private family lexicon, and I want it to become general English.
It’s a based on my kid mishearing “chaotic energy” when they were very young, and that’s what it means: something adjacent to “unhinged” and “the zoomies,” fun but also alarming, with both a physical and mental component.

'rr' is a very odd debugger - it can run backwards (kind of). Normally when debugging a program you get to a crash and find that a variable has a bad value - your challenge is now to find out how it got that way. With 'rr' you can watch the variable and tell it to 'reverse-cont' backwards until it found what wrote it! It's not that often you need it, but when you do it's amazing - it's also great for helping understand a code base you don't know.

Imagine they'd come up with this concept in the 1970s and 1980s! What amazing computers we could have had if we'd only put it all in the keyboard! 🤦‍♂️

From reporting about last night's World Series Game 6: This is the kind of amazing act that makes someone a professional. Not only the sensory ability but also the ability to act on it in a fraction of a second. And it completely changed the game's outcome.

"I was just anticipating him hitting the ball like to the left side of the field and just playing shallow, trying to keep the runner at second base from scoring," Hernandez said. "But for a split second, as Glasnow threw the ball, the crowd got quiet, and I was able to hear that the bat broke. So I just got a really good jump on the ball, and I came in."

Content warning: Stranger Things

it ended really good. great pacing and emotional moments.
After season 1 I stopped watching due to bad reviews but after season 4 ended I caught up and while season 2 wasn't my fav I really did come back strong and tell a really amazing story.

I’d never have such amazing insight myself, it can only be done with trillion-dollar investments in sandcastles (data centers)

I wish the Milwaukee Recreation web site was easier to use / better designed but then I guess I wish for a lot of things...
Like, also it's amazing that 30 years into the World Wide Web thing there are so many terrible and crappy and difficult to use web sites.

I grew up in a large city in a western democracy, with a socialist city government and it was fine.
There was basically no crime. People didn’t go hungry. Housing was affordable. Rent was regulated. Public transport was amazing. Education was free. Everyone had healthcare. Taxes were practically the same as in the US.
It was also much, much easier to start a business there than in the US. (Literally took an hour!)
People who wanted to get rich still could do it (there’s a few Austrian billionaires even).
I don’t understand how Americans got themselves so brainwashed that “socialism” is used as a term that sort of means “iworse than death”.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Congrats to them on the 32 years, but also look at how amazing GUIs used to look like before the "flat design" shit destroyed them.

It’s amazing how much of Wendy’s music isn’t available on streaming platforms. Vinyl it is!
