My amazing niece flying solo. I took this still* from a video of her getting ATC clearance, taking off, and flying. Solo. She’s not yet 20.
I rly don’t have the words to describe my feelings as I watched the video. I cried like a baby—I can say that much.
Yesterday, I bought her a pair of Ray-Ban aviator shades for Xmas. Because she’s an aviator. ❤️

Just finished "Tall Water" written by SJ Sindu and illustrated by Dion MBD. An excellent semi-autobiographical graphic novel about the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the Sri Lankan civil war, and parental estrangement.
Absolutely beautiful illustrations and a gripping plot had me tear through it in just an hour or so, though it's by no means short for a graphic novel. If my list of authors I deeply respect grows too fast, I'll just have to keep posting in my other thread indefinitely.

I was lucky to get invited on a tour of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) on a recent trip - apparently the 14th oldest university in Europe (1290), and the highlight was definitely the Joanine Library (Biblioteca Joanina). Photography is not permitted in the main library but we were allowed to take snaps in the 19th century vault. A truly remarkable piece of design combining function with beautiful decoration.

We had a surprise opportunity to go to the beach this weekend, near Southport NC. I have the weird preference to sling my hammock under the house, between the clotheslines, instead of sleeping indoors. Half camping? I use a big rubbermaid box as my "suitcase" and put my shoes on it overnight... It was cold at night, but an underquilt and reflecting bubble insulation in the hammock, with an inflatable mattress on top of my down sleeping bag, kept me cozy.
