(Made the most of the last warm weather yesterday afternoon to hike/climb along this beautiful long ridge with many cliffs, roped sections, some cute chamois and hardly any people — temporarily felt like late August, yet in two days supposedly snow starting...)

A narrow path along a very narrow ridge of light gray rocks, steep slopes dropping off on either side. The south-facing right side is mostly forested, illuminated by the warm afternoon sun. Blue sky with some streaky clouds.

Just finished "Kirby's Lessons for Falling (In Love)" by Laura Gao. I'd previously read her autobiographical graphic novel "Messy Roots" which was excellent, and this book continues that trend. Yet another complicated look at a Chinese-American immigrant experience, wrapped into a queer romance with a dose of spirituality in there as well. I think the background metaphor of falling is really strong, and gets used in so many senses it's beautiful.

Gabriel, 18 lbs at birth, his unwed Amish mother shunned for refusing to name the father, dies in labor. Gabriel lives w/ family & friends, liminally between English & Amish communities.
Exceptionally kind, incredibly athletic (a giant at over 8' tall), Gabriel attracts a lot of attention from the world. His exceptional kindness is life-altering for so many.

When I was walking down from the mountains recently I noticed the frost on the trees and branches -- and some single leafs that were still around.

Pleasant-sounding words are easier to remember, pseudoword experiment shows
Which words do we find beautiful? And do beautifully sounding words stick better in memory? A new study led by linguist Theresa Matzinger from the University of Vienna suggests that the phonemic composition of words influences how beautiful we perceive them to be, and how well we remember them. The findings are published in the journal PLOS One.
