Early in his second term, Trump wanted Canada so entwined with the United States that he even set out to make it the 51st state.
Instead, he has driven Canada into the arms of the European Union,
after antagonizing the Canadians for months, taunting the country’s prime minister and waging a relentless trade war.
The invitation by the European Unionon Wednesday for Canada to become an “associate member” is a sign of the knock-on effects of Trump’s brand of diplomacy,

Tomorrow, Andy Burnham will become the next UK Prime Minister.  He has set out his vision for his premiership, under the title 'Manchesterism'.  Much ink has already been spilled in scrutinising it.  Our sister site, Steady State Manchester, carried this article following his speech at the city's People's History Museum.  Steady State Manchester has been witness to the emergence of the supposed 'Manchester model…

“Do you think emojis will ever become part of formal language? Are we going to see emojis in laws or letters from the pension fund?” - Emojis are mainly used in informal language, because (or that’s why?) one of their main functions is to signal closeness, familiarity and a lack of hierarchy between the conversation participants. This is also the reason why a lack of emojis from a personal chat message may trigger questions like “what have I done?!”, because it could signal that the friendly relationship is disturbed. So I think emojis wouldn’t be used in legal code. But in official letters, maybe! I once received an email from a university administrator with a ☺️ and I appreciated it a lot.

This is showing one thing that I think should become general principle: Using an LLM for someone else _is rude and bad_. Presenting something untranslated that _they_ can have an LLM translate is better than doing it yourself, and not showing that input — the prompt here is not included and is a key piece of context, and the results are also bad _with no recourse_.
Information has been destroyed. Trust has been broken (or in the case of commerce, failed to be established). Even if the total amount of LLM-use were the same, this is worse than the reader using it.
PROMPTING AN LLM FOR SOMEONE ELSE IS RUDE.

I sat near a student on the train into Toronto last night who went on an expletive-ridden, 10-minute tear about the government of Ontario and its massive transfer of student grants to loans. Condensed to its essence: this is a bait and switch and students like her, who began their studies in the expectation that education would remain affordable (or at least wouldn't become massively more expensive over night), are "so cooked."

Is emoji interpretation just a "fun" summer topic, or does emoji misinterpretation ever become serious, like in court discussions? - In face there have been several cases both in North America and Europe where emoji meanings were negotiated in court! I keep a collection of them because it's a nice intersection with my alter ego, the "forensic" linguist. For example, in cases from Canada and Bavaria, judges had to decide whether a thumbs-up 👍 in a chat was meant as a signal of agreement (to a contract or contract amendment), or whether (like the senders argued) it constituted only an acknowledgement of receipt of the message. In both cases, the context was super important - how did the parties interact before, what else was said in the chat, etc. Interesting! #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

The hallway started the day this meh grey-lilac colour, which had become very grubby and marked, and has ended it a nice invisible shade of mangolia. Next step is the stairwell and upstairs landing, maybe tomorrow otherwise next weekend. We'll be changing the pictures to show a few that have been in storage for years. All this because we needed to make good after having the new radiators fitted as part of the #HeatPump

A busy hallway painted in a sickly shade of lilacy-grey with white doors and skirting boards. There is a coat rack on the left corner between the front door and the loo, pictures on the wall and blue curtains in front of the door. There's a reddish shield on the wall that has no monetary value but did appear on Antiques Roadshow *checks notes* 42 years ago 😧
A hallway in a sickly shade of lilacy-grey with white doors, skirting boards and bannisters. The stairs go up on the left, carpeted in a deeply unexciting hard wearing oatmeal coloured material.
The same hallway now a nice clean shade of vanilla. I love it so uncluttered but some different pictures will go up, as will the curtains over the front door and the coat rack. The utility room is now a startlingly bright shade of green and the dining room is going to be a sage shade to complement my fabulous orange dining chairs, so I can live with a Dad-pleasing neutral shade in the hallway, up the stairs and on the landing.

@… "Can emojis be removed from Unicode? Or are they there forever once they are in?" - As of now, once they're in, they're in. The code point in Unicode is then reserved for this symbol. This can be a problem because emojis are kind of open-ended (other than alphabets and many other symbol lists). And it's possible that some emojis turn out to be rarely used. I could imagine that eventually some platforms just stop supporting a certain emoji - but it's really useful to have an international encoding standard which is fully supported by most technology (as anyone who has programmed or written online text in the early 2000s can attest). That's why getting a new emoji approved has become so hard - we're basically creating a kind of tech debt for a potentially long time.
Funny story - you could try creating a post now with a Unicode character from an "empty" code point in the emoji range, in the hope that it will get assigned in a later round. I've seen such a post on the old Twitter, which later was filled with all kinds of random emojis, when you look at it in a few years. #linguistics #emojis #WorldEmojiDay

The state of #Python ecosystem right now: almost everything is slop. Some projects are complete vibe-coded slop (autobahn, chardet, cryptography). Some projects are disguised slop ("Coding agents shouldn't co-author themselves.")
There is only a handful of human projects left (Flask being one bright example). And they're being killed. They're being killed by the neverending slew of slop pull requests. They're being killed by all their dependencies becoming slop. They're being killed because this whole ecosystem has became such a complete cesspit that you have zero motivation to do anything.
EDIT: and honestly, this is only going to get worse. When you kill the incentive to work on projects, you only get more slop. Maintainers give in, and more projects become slop. Or they give up, and projects get forked unto slop.

But I would warn anyone circumventing anti-LLM protections that, as the tide turns against #LLM usage and "#AI" as a whole, that it may become politically useful for some state AGs to score political points. Those political points may come by putting you in prison, or, at the very least, dumping lawyers on you and ruining your life. An AG doesn't need to win to score points for their political party or to virtue signal. All they need to do is build a case against you. Because the CFAA is *so vague* it's easy to make something plausible enough that it won't get thrown out immediately.
So if the gentile "please don't do that" isn't enough, maybe consider this.

On Monday, two days before the Senate hearing to consider Todd Blanche’s nomination to become the nation’s chief law enforcement official,
a federal judge strongly suggested that he may not even be fit to practice law.
Of all the powers Americans give their government,
none can curtail personal liberty like those of the Department of Justice,
and this editorial board has listed the ways Mr. Blanche has abused that authority.
He has celebrated the Jan. 6 rioters…

Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cell therapy is an immunotherapy technique that involves taking a patient's immune cells and genetically engineering them to become potent cancer-hunting predators.
The treatment has shown huge promise in helping patients treat cancer, although its effectiveness has mostly been limited to treating blood cancers, not solid tumors.
But an inspirational real-life success story involving a three-year-old patient shows scientists are making big prog…

Jay Clayton, the US attorney for the southern district of New York,
refused to say that Joe Biden won the 2020 election during his Wednesday confirmation hearing to become the country’s next intelligence chief.
Clayton opted instead to say that Biden was “certified” as president.
Clayton also skirted questions about his previous election integrity claims and whether or not a White House official asked him to subpoena a group of New York Times journalists as part of an alleg…

Congress’ marquee housing legislation
aimed at increasing the country’s housing supply
is set to become law at midnight
— without Donald Trump’s signature.
“I will not sign the Housing Bill, which has been fully approved by Congress and sent to the White House,

Trump, who could still change his mind and sign the legislation, posted on Friday.

Tech Goliaths are scrambling to build as much AI computing capacity as they possibly can, come hell or low water.
One of the dominant players in the space, Amazon Web Services, has its heart set on an AI data center so enormous that it could easily become 💥the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States.
According to the New York Times, Amazon has confirmed its investment in a massive gas-burning power plant in Texas, meant to supply up to 7.65 gigawatts of ene…

PG&E’s plans to surrender and decommission the Potter Valley Project
— a defunct hydroelectric system that diverts water from the Upper Eel River to the headwaters of the Russian River
— have become something of a political football in recent months.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins seems determined to blow up the

developed under U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman.
The prospects for that historic agreement have been threat…

"More and more people are dying.
So the question arises:
wouldn't it be better to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine
rather than, perhaps later, over Poland?
This is a subject for a very serious discussion,
one that should not become a hostage to party-political rivalry,"
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said.

With most of the votes counted, Sweden’s national election remained too close to call on Sunday night,
with left-wing parties holding a lead of just a single seat according to a partial tally by the election authority.

Some students are directing AI agents to “take” entire online courses for them,
letting the software run in the background while they focus on better uses of their time,
--like doomscrolling on their phone or gaming.
The New York Times unpacked the trend in a recent story,
and it’s a testament to how extreme AI-enabled cheating has become,
but also of the perils of getting an education in a virtual environment instead of a physical one.

A civically minded voter in Houston, Texas, may already have voted six times this year.
When voters in California cast their ballots in November, they will weigh in on a wealth tax from three different angles.
In Idaho, home to just 2m people, voters will elect 49 judges, a slew of county coroners and decide which of six firearms should become the state’s official gun.
No other rich democracy hands as many decisions directly to its voters
