This is both appalling and utterly unsurprising.
Given how Google search results have been an ad-driven dark pattern for years, and the mostly-wrong stolen results of its LLM answers, my fear is people have been inured to it.

We present a novel image reconstruction method, MORSE-PI, designed to produce high-SNR, artefact-free, and singularity-free phase images for both structural and functional phase-based brain imaging. MORSE-PI extends our previous approach, MORSE, by introducing a Virtual Reference Coil (VRC). The VRC is constructed as a linear combination of coil sensitivity maps, with correlations enhanced between coil elements using the noise covariance matrix. Such a VRC ensures robust signal support across the entire brain and is used to correct phase offsets in the MORSE-derived coil sensitivity estimates, resulting in artefact-free, high SNR phase. Compared to GRAPPA with ASPIRE phase correction, MORSE-PI demonstrates greater robustness to artefacts such as noise amplification and aliasing, and shows improved reproducibility in structural imaging at both 3T and 7T. Unlike ESPIRiT and GRAPPA combined with adaptive coil combination methods, MORSE-PI yields singularity-free phase maps. MORSE-PI enables high-SNR reconstructions even for the most challenging scenarios, such as single-echo EPI at 7T. Its efficient, containerised implementation using the Gadgetron framework supports deployment on the MRI scanner console during measurements. MORSE-PI offers a flexible and computationally efficient solution for generating high-SNR, artefact- and singularity-free phase images in both single- and multi-echo GRE and EPI acquisitions. This makes it particularly well-suited for structural and functional QSM, as well as other phase-based MRI applications. Its robustness and rapid computational time facilitate efficient deployment on scanners across field strengths.

Dropped the wee one off at preschool in Charnwood this morning and then we drove to Fyshwick for a major shopping excursion to the EOFY sales. Bunk beds and some storage for the wee one's stuff, plus new mattresses for us all. Two different shops, two different deliveries (hopefully both next week). The mattresses were, by far, the most expensive part but I guess that's fair. We're gonna need all the rest we can possibly get. 😁

Just finished "Fustuk" by Robert Mgrdich Apelian. Without exaggeration, it is a true masterpiece, an absolutely stunning graphic novel about food, family, and magical contracts that reminds me of both Witch Hat Atelier and Young Bride's Stories. The truly impressive part is that Apelian is every bit as good an illustrator and storyteller as both Kamome Shirahama and Kaoru Mori.
In the author's note, Apelian says "So I asked to make the story I always craved growing up: a tale of Middle Eastern joy and magic that speaks to diasporic culture and how those of us within it relate to our two worlds." He succeeded at that goal abundantly, as far as I can tell, and has produced a truly impressive work.
Images are rough pictures of a few example pages showing very cool panel construction, lots of detail, and both dynamic action and expressive faces. I'm not going to spoil anything, but the second image here is one of the most powerful pages I've read in a while and the way it uses gutters demonstrates a beautiful mastery of the comics medium.

One last example:
The first LLM code example that really made my eyes pop was early after the release of GPT, when somebody got it to combine Breakout with Conway’s Game of Life (a truly delightful idea). It worked!
Funny thing: the Breakout code and the Life code had a •completely• different style and flavor. Red flag. In about 15 minutes of web searching, I was able to find one of the projects (can’t remember if it was the Breakout or the Life half) which it had copied wholesale, with just a few variable renames. And the other half? It was in Python, but it used dictionaries where it really should have used objects — tons of `thing["prop"]` where it should have said `thing.prop`, and lots of other un-Pythonic stuff besides. It was a machine translate of code from another language, very likely Javascript.
The entire thing was a plagiarized Breakout and a plagiarized Game of Life, one transpiled, and all stuck together in a single run loop. To be fair, figuring out how to (1) run both halves of the logic from a single loop and (2) count the Life cells as Breakout bricks is work I'd cheer on from a second-semester intro CS student! It's not, however, quite what's being sold by these companies.

As a small trial, I’m giving a joint timeline and posting app for Bluesky and mastodon a go. This means I will see both places and post in both places in the one feed. Immensely satisfying to get both tasks 2 and 3, which have stubbornly remained on my to-do list, both ticked off today.

So, I'm still experimenting with locally run LLMs (powered by solar cells!) for writing some inconsequential data mangling stuff for my "vintage cameras" hobby; it's quite interesting how the development cycle with these LLMs sort of drives home that LLMs are completely useless for almost anything they're advertised for, like writing (for humans).
The thing is: coding is the use case that LLMs are by far most suitable for and they still largely suck at it.
There's immense amounts of training data of correctly functioning code, there's tons of documentation, a lot of code is in repositories that include the full history of its development including why stuff was changed in small bits, code itself is the simplest of "human" languages and mathematically non-ambiguous, code can be checked in small bits for correctness by just running it, in many languages simple code snippets can be written to introspect on the code (e.g. find out what methods an object supports, so an LLM can query the language or libraries themselves in addition to the user) and perhaps most importantly: code is always and has always been very similar to other, existing code as most software serves the ever same repetitive use cases, both in detail and on a high level.
YET… using LLMs to code requires countless iterations to get there, both internally in the LLM (to get the code even running in the first place) and together with the user to make it do the right thing. And even when it's "there" the code is mediocre at best, and often veering into appalling.

Abstract: A kV dual tube system has been disseminated as a commercial research platform for preclinical FLASH radiotherapy (RT). Because the tubes are arranged in a parallel opposed geometry, both output symmetry and time resolved tube synchronization are critical for achieving sufficiently high dose rates (DR) and reproducible study results. We quantified tube output asymmetry observed in depth dose measurements as well as tube synchronization and evaluated their impact on FLASH studies. The dual-tube system defines dose per pulse as the combined single pulse output from both tubes, with DR given by dose per pulse/pulse length. 3D dose distributions were reconstructed from film measurements to assess the impact of output discrepancies. Pulse synchronization between tubes was characterized using a scintillator with 1 ms resolution. We showed >20% discrepancies in output at nominally equal mA/ms settings. After we compensated such discrepancy by decreasing the current of the tube with higher output, the inter tube output difference was reduced to <1%, restoring symmetrical depth dose. We further simulated an in vivo intestinal irradiation in which naive tube settings resulted in >22% of the organ volume receiving >102% of the prescribed dose, compared with <7% when output compensation was applied. We identified a 10.2 /- 7.0ms synchronization jitter between tubes, which disproportionately impacts the DR at low dose-per-pulse settings, particularly relevant for fractionated studies. Corresponding quality assurance (QA) was designed to monitor tube synchronization over time. We quantified the dosimetric impact of asymmetric output and synchronization and demonstrated implications for preclinical studies. The proposed methodology and QA would mitigate and monitor these effects, ensuring study reproducibility.

Finally finished Hardspace: Shipbreaker just now, and while it's a really great game, the ending is, as expected, disappointing. Not the gameplay part of it, that was great, but the failure to gesture towards anything beyond capitalism in these kinds of games/stories is especially galling when they set themselves up to tackle the issue head on. The high doses of rugged individualism in the ending cinematic are especially jarring. Like, isn't the whole point of the game that the workers deserve rights and freedom? But then you let us know that we specifically have earned our freedom through hard work... It can't be both.
Still a very good game overall, with a completely novel set of mechanics and overall world setup that doesn't center violent conflict as the main mechanic (even though violent conflict does play a part), which is a rarity these days.
