Just finished "Fustuk" by Robert Mgrdich Apelian. Without exaggeration, it is a true masterpiece, an absolutely stunning graphic novel about food, family, and magical contracts that reminds me of both Witch Hat Atelier and Young Bride's Stories. The truly impressive part is that Apelian is every bit as good an illustrator and storyteller as both Kamome Shirahama and Kaoru Mori.
In the author's note, Apelian says "So I asked to make the story I always craved growing up: a tale of Middle Eastern joy and magic that speaks to diasporic culture and how those of us within it relate to our two worlds." He succeeded at that goal abundantly, as far as I can tell, and has produced a truly impressive work.
Images are rough pictures of a few example pages showing very cool panel construction, lots of detail, and both dynamic action and expressive faces. I'm not going to spoil anything, but the second image here is one of the most powerful pages I've read in a while and the way it uses gutters demonstrates a beautiful mastery of the comics medium.

It's worth nothing that oil, the dominant funder of both political parties, the industry that ultimately maintains veto power over both parties political platforms, is not profitable without massive state investment. Roads, parking, and infrastructure grants, all put money in the pockets of the industry that is destroying the planet. That money then comes right back into the political sphere to control the frame of debate around climate change and how to address it.

Is emoji interpretation just a "fun" summer topic, or does emoji misinterpretation ever become serious, like in court discussions? - In face there have been several cases both in North America and Europe where emoji meanings were negotiated in court! I keep a collection of them because it's a nice intersection with my alter ego, the "forensic" linguist. For example, in cases from Canada and Bavaria, judges had to decide whether a thumbs-up 👍 in a chat was meant as a signal of agreement (to a contract or contract amendment), or whether (like the senders argued) it constituted only an acknowledgement of receipt of the message. In both cases, the context was super important - how did the parties interact before, what else was said in the chat, etc. Interesting! #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

So, I'm still experimenting with locally run LLMs (powered by solar cells!) for writing some inconsequential data mangling stuff for my "vintage cameras" hobby; it's quite interesting how the development cycle with these LLMs sort of drives home that LLMs are completely useless for almost anything they're advertised for, like writing (for humans).
The thing is: coding is the use case that LLMs are by far most suitable for and they still largely suck at it.
There's immense amounts of training data of correctly functioning code, there's tons of documentation, a lot of code is in repositories that include the full history of its development including why stuff was changed in small bits, code itself is the simplest of "human" languages and mathematically non-ambiguous, code can be checked in small bits for correctness by just running it, in many languages simple code snippets can be written to introspect on the code (e.g. find out what methods an object supports, so an LLM can query the language or libraries themselves in addition to the user) and perhaps most importantly: code is always and has always been very similar to other, existing code as most software serves the ever same repetitive use cases, both in detail and on a high level.
YET… using LLMs to code requires countless iterations to get there, both internally in the LLM (to get the code even running in the first place) and together with the user to make it do the right thing. And even when it's "there" the code is mediocre at best, and often veering into appalling.
And this is expected to just work on the first try on much more complex issues like writing for humans? Transcribing doctors? Having legal opinions? Identifying fraud? lol, sure

Finally finished Hardspace: Shipbreaker just now, and while it's a really great game, the ending is, as expected, disappointing. Not the gameplay part of it, that was great, but the failure to gesture towards anything beyond capitalism in these kinds of games/stories is especially galling when they set themselves up to tackle the issue head on. The high doses of rugged individualism in the ending cinematic are especially jarring. Like, isn't the whole point of the game that the workers deserve rights and freedom? But then you let us know that we specifically have earned our freedom through hard work... It can't be both.
Still a very good game overall, with a completely novel set of mechanics and overall world setup that doesn't center violent conflict as the main mechanic (even though violent conflict does play a part), which is a rarity these days.

webkb: WebKB graphs (1998)
Web graphs crawled from four Computer Science departments in 1998, with each page manually classified into one of 7 categories: course, department, faculty, project, staff, student, or other. All graphs included in a single .zip; also included are 'co-citation' graphs, which links i and j if they both point to some k. Edge weights count the number of links from i to j.
This network has 300 nodes and 1155 edges.

There is both where you draw a line on spectrum and how you judge people on either side of the line.
If where you draw the line is much stricter then where other draw it then folks who do better then average but worse then what you expect become a group of people you have to make a decision about.
do you treat them the same as those who are below everyone's line? Or do you address them separately?

Prior to 1865, many Afro-Texans reclaimed their sovereignty and autonomy
-- well before the federal government acknowledged their basic humanity,
though there’s a dearth of centralized information about Black placemaking in Texas from this time.
This reclamation was called “marronage”
—a term borrowed from French for this act of antebellum self-emancipation.
The word most often refers specifically to runaway slaves, or “maroons,”
who broke free to set up…

Full video with narration and a lot more field solver eye candy coming soon but here's a quick animation showing a 35 GHz wavefront moving through a curved differential pair, accumulating a phase shift due to the unequal path lengths, then being re-aligned by a meander.
Transmission line behavior is so much easier to understand and debug when you can see it like this.

Sonnet EM solver animated current density view showing a differential pair.

The wavefronts in both halves of the pair leaves the BGA balls aligned but as the traces curve around corners, the outer path is slightly longer so the signal is delayed relative to the inner leg. A meandering trace then adds an equivalent path delay to the other leg bringing them back into alignment

And he has offered conflicting accounts on one of the key issues in the conflict

Manchester United are playing extremely well under Carrick. Fernandes is deservedly the player of the season and he’s lifted them to a top 3 finish. Transcendent season from him.
But it’s also true that in their last three results (W-D-W), both wins were by a single goal and both game winning goals were handballs waved away by VAR. The goal against LFC I could understand. You could see the spin change, but it was less definitive. Today’s decision? Smells bad. Really bad.

Actually, should the plural be "emoji" or "emojis" ?? 😵‍💫 - Both are used frequently! I think "emoji" reminds us of other loan words that end in "-i" in the plural, like "celli" or "radii" or "tori" or all the pastas. That's why many people feel that "emoji" is plural enough 😅 . But the word is from Japanese, and is called "emoji" in the singular, from "e" = picture and "moji" = character. (In contrast to "emot-icon", the word "emoji" doesn't have anything to do with emotion!) So my vote is for the regular English plural "-s", yielding "emojis" ✅ #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

At least within the Republican party, Trump approval rating remains at 82%, according to a New York Times newspaper/ Siena poll released on Monday.
But the same poll showed Trump’s overall approval rating down to 37%, the lowest of either term. Nearly two in three voters disapprove both of his handling of the economy and decision to wage war on Iran. Democrats lead Republicans 50%-39% on the generic congressional ballot.
This suggests the Republican party is ever more out of whack …

Surfing Ability Summit page at 200% with my keyboard (as one does) and came across this weird control.
Turns out it’s a roled-up button that launches Microsoft Immersive reader. Which is crap at 200%, it turns out.
Anyway, use native HTML buttons and let users rely on their browser’s reader mode.

A book / speaker icon overflowing its container with dev tools showing it’s a div with a button role, an icon from a CSS glyph in an I element that has presentation role, and the button has both aria-label and title of “10:15 AM–11:15 AM | BRK010 - Building NeuroInclusive Employee Experiences | Room: McKinley Immersive Reader”.
The new view where the bottom half of the “Immersive Reader” is clipped, the lines of text run out of the viewport to the right with no scrollbar, the Play and Voice Settings buttons overlap one another, and the circle defining the bounds of Voice Settings is itself offset above the icon and mostly over the Play button.

Which one of these BGA fanouts is better?
Both are the same nominal trace/space, both are skew matched by the time you get to the vertical "home run" area heading towards the connector.
But TDR of the first one wasn't that great. Let's see if the second one is any better when the simulation finishes...

BGA fanout of a diffpair coming off a pair of vertically stacked BGA lands so the trace running to the upper one is longer than the lower until a bunch of meanders straighten them back out
Alternate layout with the track coming left from the balls and tightly coupled the whole way but taking a bit more space and needing much less meanders
