Dang it all. The dryer at our holiday accommodation appears to have, bizarrely, melted the zip (just a small section, but enough) on my Cactus shorts... and now I'm perpetually flying low. These are my 90% of days-type clothing in summer. Sigh. Luckily, I'll be able to take them in for repairs shortly... assuming I can find something to wear while they're at the shop.

If you've got something dark you want to photograph, like a black cat or article of clothing, you can achieve better definition by having some white paper or styrofoam outside the frame,…
I'm wondering if 4°C is warm enough for short. I mean, they ARE long shorts, so I should be ok with equally long socks.
These are the lengths (no pun intended) that I will go to, to not wear full length jeans.

Just finished folding and hanging some laundry. It occured to me to wonder when was the button-buttonhole combo invented, and by whom? Based on the archeological finding of bone needles dated to many 10s of 1000s of years ago, fitted clothing in one form or another has been a thing for a very long time. Maybe even Neanderthals did it. So fasteners of some sort would exist, but what about the button-buttonhole combo as we know it today?

I'm not at all versed in medieval Jewish clothing culture or the attention paid to such in Weimar Germany film productions. Are the fashions depicted here accurate for a sixteenth century Prague ghetto?

Today at VU Amsterdam for the PhD defense of Shuai Wang. I really liked the traditional and formal procedure in the Netherlands how they conduct a PhD defense and the subsequent investiture of the new PhD.

Finally, arriving at our our 10th province, Manitoba, and putting this series to rest means no more nightmares. Friendly Manitoba, it says so right on their license plates, also has hundreds of abandoned towns, but today we'll focus on Scarf. Named for William Scarf, not for winter clothing or the more recent term for eating quickly, the settlement began in the 1880s, started to flourish after train service arrived in 1907, and died slowly after train service stopped, with the last residents leaving in the 1980s. But in 2013, the regional mayor decided to sell parcels of land in the ghost town for $10. I wasn't able to find out if this plan to bring Scarf back from the dead was successful, but perhaps the area is cursed. In 2020, a tornado touched down near Scarf, killing two teenagers when their vehicle was swept off the road.

This video essay about the look of Sinners (which was shot on 70mm IMAX and Ultra Panavision) brought up something I hadn't realised until now: the large format gives you a wide field of view with the look of a telephoto lens! What that means is that you get shallow depth of field like in closeup shots with the framing of a wider angle lens.
Personal observation: there's also very little barrel lens distortion that usually comes with wide shots on 35mm.
Today at Pyöräpaja someone brought some green tea candy from China. Delicious. It is imported to the EU by a company in #Prato, Italy. I knew the businesses in Prato Chinatown for the clothing sector, I was not aware of the food importers. Such a blessing!

Whimpering here. I am going through a large envelope of negatives with a few prints. From what I see they go back to the early 60s. Almost no information about when, where or who. For some of them I can make an educated guess based on clothing styles and cars.

- don't dump multiple rolls of negatives into one sleeve.

Good Morning #Canada
Prior to #Retirement, my last decade in business was spent in #ReverseLogistics managing major retail and manufacturer clients. Reverse logistics is the process of managing customer returns with the objective of recapturing value or ensure proper disposal. It covers activities like processing, restocking where possible, repairs, recycling, refurbishing, and resale. This company in Mississauga is relatively small in comparison to a Costco or Walmart reverse logistics warehouse but it provides a glimpse at a little known industry that deals with $880B USD in annual returns worldwide. The industry is about to enter its busiest period as consumers will return over 10% of Christmas purchases, close to 30% for clothing. In the 1st 3 months of 2026 some remarketing B2B auction sites (representing Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, Target, etc) will be liquidating 100 tractor trailer loads per day, including stuff you're about to unwrap in a few days.
