Error chaining in JavaScript: cleaner debugging with Error.cause
Error handling in JavaScript has always felt a bit chaotic. Throwing errors is easy, but tracing them back to the root cause? Not so much. That’s where the cause property comes in.

Q&A with D‑Wave CEO Alan Baratz on the Quantum Circuits acquisition, error-correcting quantum systems, its Davidson and Anduril defense collaboration, and more (Luke Kawa/Sherwood News)

Cleared off the driveway from the second snow. It was nice and powdery, so no big deal.
Then I had to clear in front of the garage doors from the first snowstorm. Snow drifts with frozen rain on top had turned them into glaciers.
After some trial and error, I found that using the maul would break the ice into boulders. Then it was a function of breaking the boulders to the point where I could lift them and toss them clear.
They were not light and I am very tired.
A good day is when I learn something new. Today I learned a small thing in AWK for IF statements. It makes the life of the team easier now as I can allow for multiple year checks on an input file. This coming December I can set it up to handle 2026/2027 dates without causing an error message like we received today. I knew how to do it in APL, BASIC, C, dBase, PASCAL, PL/1, COBOL, FORTRAN, REXX, RUST, SQL and BASH. Never did it in AWK.

Was there a massive leak of a dangerous greenhouse gas in Iceland🇮🇸 in 2011 - or was it just a data📈 reporting error? European emission databases show that the Norðuršl aluminium factory🏭 in Iceland released 60 tons of SF₆ in 2011 — but no such emissions in any other year. It's so much that it is hard to believe this really happened. And that is not the only odd thing I found in emission databases.

The error message automatically spawns, docked to the south side of the filter graph editor, when an error appears and disappears when the last error is resolved.
Successfully switched an old Chromebox to running Ubuntu Server last night. This one will probably wind up at my parents' place, and I'll grab another mini PC for here, so I'll have geo-redundant, ISP-redundant backups that don't require a cloud, on hardware low-power enough that electricity use is a rounding error.

The unwrap thing is the equivalent of ignoring the return value of C functions that can fail.
I still prefer the Rust syntax for this, at least ignoring the error is explicit text in code.
In C ignoring a possible error is silent. To spot the error one would need to know the function signature and documentation in advance.
Side note: exceptions are even worse in my humble opinion. They have the advantage of giving more information about an error than just a null or a negativ…

When I attempt to login to elk.mstdn.ca, I get a 502 error. (see screenshot attached). So for the past couple of months, I have been unable to access Elk on my Win 11 Desktop.
However I WAS able to continue to access Elk on my Macbook Pro laptop until a couple of weeks ago, but now I get the same error there.
When I investigate this at cloudflare, I am advised:
There are two possible causes:
502/504 errors from your origin web server (most common).
I also have noticed that my security program, BitDefender has notified me of this several times:
firefox.exe attempted to establish a connection relying on an unmatching security certificate to cdn.signalayer.com. We blocked the connection to keep your data safe since the used certificate was issued for a different web address than the targeted one
Is this possibly related to my difficulties?
I have attached a screenshot of the CloudFlare error
I would very much appreciate any assistance or advice anyone can provide.

There is someone who has taken a lot of old films and used AI to colorize them badly and "boosted" the frame rate from 24 to 60fps and then uploaded this trash to the Internet Archive.
I hate this. Films shot in b&w have an aesthetic that is destroyed by colorizing them. Video games might look better with more frames per second but movies don't. We didn't accidentally settle on 24fps, it was trial and error. A film shot in 60fps looks bad. A movie that has been ar…

It was an error to describe the 3 branches of government as "co-equal." They are not. The first three words of the Constitution are "We the people." The people are sovereign. We rule through Congress, and thereby have power to depose a president or a judge. A president is not a ruler, nor is a justice of the Supreme Court, nor a general, nor an admiral. They are servants of the people.

When you fail from no disk space, the output file is usually modified but empty. So you'll catch the error before deleting their save. Rename is usually atomic, so safe.

Dispersion-Aware Modeling Framework for Parallel Optical Computing

Abstract: Optical computing represents a groundbreaking technology that leverages the unique properties of photons, with innate parallelism standing as its most compelling advantage. Parallel optical computing like cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) based offers powerful computational capabilities but also introduces new challenges, particularly concerning dispersion due to the introduction of new frequencies. In this work, we extend existing theories of cascaded MZI systems to develop a generalized model tailored for wavelength-multiplexed parallel optical computing. Our comprehensive model incorporates component dispersion characteristics into a wavelength-dependent transfer matrix framework and is experimentally validated. We propose a computationally efficient compensation strategy that reduces global dispersion error within a 40 nm range from 0.22 to 0.039 using edge-spectrum calibration. This work establishes a fundamental framework for dispersion-aware model and error correction in MZI-based parallel optical computing chips, advancing the reliability of multi-wavelength photonic processors.
