Selected a #hiking route for tomorrow.
Just reminded myself to check the avalanche status... Selected another route...
Maybe overcautios - but my route would go over a larger alpine meadow. Even though I'd go via a south flank that is mentioned with less risk - when I'm going alone, I prefer zero risk.

Spend my day in Slackware Flatbrew, a one-off from my mate in Motown. Synced KDE dots, brew installs and installed flatpaks between Aurorix and Slackware, to achieve that at-home feeling, anywhere i go. It worked out great. Tomorrow it'll be Larry and dwm. Can't go wrong with that one either.

Heading South
But not for the warmth.. Tomorrow I'm taking the first stage of the journey to Antarctica, ironically enough though, I'm heading south by first heading north, to Oslo, where the Norwegian Polar Institute have organised an almost direct flight from Oslo to Troll station with a short stopover in Cape Town. Bags almost packed and ready to go... I'm super excited and also suffering a little trepidation.

Minneapolis Public Schools closed schools because they deemed it too dangerous for students to be there on Thu and Fri.
Tomorrow morning, students go back to school. My question: what’s changed? Is it not still dangerous?

#today various bits of admin including starting things for this year's sustainability hackathon at uni, and very slowly and carefully* fetching and processing the extra 2025 house heating data set again (I'll do most tomorrow).
*Automation, I've heard of it! But it didn't work out so well last time, so I'm eyeballing probably millions of data points as I go this time...<…

A little bit of left over wood. I figure best used as spare shelves in the closet and the alcove. A couple of steady boards upon which to rest the treadmill. Extra spare steady board for unknown purposes currently but might as well.
So some bits actually cut and painted myself.
Gotta spin them and do the other side tomorrow.
Then a varnish each side the next two days.
Then the bed arrives. Decided to order it and go overdraft if needed. Ordered in untreated pine so I can paint it to match the cupboards.
So a few days painting that before assembling.
Don't worry, I didn't cut them wrong, they're supposed to not all be square 😆

When "self-driving" cars were first getting some hype back in ~2015 or so, I told people who asked me that I didn't think they'd be safe, and that I wished the same money were being invested in driver-assistance systems instead.
At the time, advocates were claiming that self-driving cars would be safer than human drivers.
We now have both self-driving cars and some nifty new driver assistance things, and it turns out that the self-driving cars are in fact being developed by corporations whose attention to the bottom line results in danger to others on the road pretty regularly. I don't actually have stats here for whether they're "safer than human drivers" or not, but the opportunity for one bad software update to make *all* self-driving cars dangerous at once kinda makes me doubt that.
Here's an example of Waymo cars getting "more aggressive" as they try to balance between being too timid and obstructing traffic (including emergency vehicles) and being too dangerous:
archive.ph/JJuGv
Here's another example of passing stopped schoolbusses leading to a software recall:
abcnews.go.com/GMA/News/waymo-
In the first article, Waymo claims 91% fewer serious accidents per mile. Obviously an independent audit would be actually trustworthy, but even if we take that claim at face value, it's meaningless if an update tomorrow causes 100,000 accidents.
Note that they could be using better engineering practices, and the fact that they aren't shows that they don't care enough about the risks. They could be deploying new software versions incrementally and slowly, letting new versions rack up lots of miles only on a few vehicles before pushing them to a fleet. The should also have the equivalent of a simulation unit test for "schoolbus is stopped, what do?" and if a software version fails that test, it doesn't make it to the fleet. Clearly they don't have that.
I feel pretty vindicated in my earlier prediction that this tech is a bad idea in the hands of the current advocates.

First gudgin of the season. We'll have kilos of them this year but the first are always a treat. They're mouth puckeringly sour but so deep in flavour (and extremely good forvyou). I'll make jam and sauce and dried powder later but these first 4 go in the fridge (seeds taken out) with a sprinkle of sugar overnight and onto my yoghurt tomorrow. #fromthegarden

Last night's run: a decent one, but my night vision is not what it used to be, so a little slower than I would like.
Looking like outdoor #running tomorrow and Friday too with great weather. Today was a treadmill day, though, partially because that's all I had time for.
We shall see how long I can go with outdoor running this winter.

Series C, Episode 03 - Volcano
HOWER: You somehow overcame your peaceful conditioning. When you were a child the therapists said that you were at risk. I welcomed this possibility, because I needed, I thought, one man who could think aggressively like my enemies.
BERSHAR: I have not renounced the theory of peace. Servalan is more powerful than these people. Tomorrow or the next day they will go, and Servalan will be back with her battle fleet.

This image appears to be from a period drama or historical film, set in an ornate interior with rich gold-patterned wallpaper visible in the background. The setting suggests a formal, aristocratic environment, likely from a European palace or grand manor.

Bedroom is done! Well. Builders are finished anyway. I still have to buy a bed and stuff to put in it, and since I've spent all my money that'll have to wait until payday. And then it's nearly xmas so probably better to wait until January.
There's a clasp missing to hold the window shutters shut. The one we had was too big. Should be able to screw one in myself tomorrow.
Doing all the lights and stuff will takes months and months probably.
But I can go back to sleeping in late instead of getting up to let the builders in every day.

There's a lot going on at the moment including Mum being on palliative care in a nursing home and my uncle dying recently, someone I really loved. He's the first of that generation to go and it feels huge. My hair has started falling out due to stress though fortunately it's not noticable. They've been cutting doors into shape all day. Some have hinges on them, but none are hung onto the cupboards so no point in any photos.
None have any panels yet either.
Oh, or the holes I need for all the cables that'll have to go everywhere for speakers and lights. Will have to remember to ask about that tomorrow.
