Bronze Venus statuette with gold jewellery from Pompeii. The goddess is touching the golden anklet on her left foot, maybe about to put it on or take it off. She also wears golden arm rings on both arms. Her lips have been painted red or given a layer of copper. She wears her hair in a top bow updo. Below her anklets, there are finely crafted sandals on her feet.

When I was walking down from the mountains recently I noticed the frost on the trees and branches -- and some single leafs that were still around.
I really liked this extra touch of color in the grey surrounding. And that it's just a little detail on the huge mountain.
#photography #winter

This image captures a delicate and serene winter scene in a forest. The branches of the trees are coated with a thin layer of frost, creating a beautiful, crystalline effect. The frost highlights the intricate patterns of the branches, giving them a magical, almost fairy-tale-like appearance.

A few brown leaves still cling to the branches, adding a touch of autumnal color to the otherwise monochromatic scene. The background is softly blurred, emphasizing the frosted branches in the foreground …

arXiv:2511.09925v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Gradient descent dynamics on the deep matrix factorization problem is extensively studied as a simplified theoretical model for deep neural networks. Although the convergence theory for two-layer matrix factorization is well-established, no global convergence guarantee for general deep matrix factorization under random initialization has been established to date. To address this gap, we provide a polynomial-time global convergence guarantee for randomly initialized gradient descent on four-layer matrix factorization, given certain conditions on the target matrix and a standard balanced regularization term. Our analysis employs new techniques to show saddle-avoidance properties of gradient decent dynamics, and extends previous theories to characterize the change in eigenvalues of layer weights.

This image portrays a tranquil winter scene in a forest. Tall, leafless trees stand on either side of a narrow, snow-covered path that winds its way through the woods. The ground is blanketed in a layer of fresh snow, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

A light mist or fog fills the forest, softening the outlines of the trees and adding a sense of mystery and calm. The bare branches of the trees reach upward, their dark trunks contrasting sharply with the white snow. The path, partially…

I think today's worker is the owner of the company, he certainly is the assessor.
He worked a lot later than those without the vested interest there. 😆 I finished work at my job before he did! 🤭
All the wood was sanded down and remaining nude wood given some paint. We have a test plank in the foreground of the first picture here which is painted with a second coat of paint. Seems likely we lose all the wood grain when doing that, and so will prefer the paler look where it's obviously made of wood not paint.
Won't really know for sure till it's dry. Prefer the colour a bit darker like that but if we're hiding the wood grain we might as well have used MDF instead of pine. We're after something clearly made of wood.
Another area is test-painted with just the clearcoat top varnish as a second layer. That's likely to be right, just a bit more shiny and protected.
The carpenter proper is back from holiday and starts tomorrow. He has a lot of drawers and doors to build and edging to attach to make the door panels. Still hoping at least the carpentry will be pretty much all done by the end of the week but likely some painting and touching up still to do next week. Hopefully by the end of Tuesday because I'm not really able to be here all day each day for most of the two weeks after that.

Content warning: Advent of Code Day 11

Day 11 of #AdventOfCode is a classical graph problem like we're used to from previous years.
Unlike previously, I immediately thought of checking what the graph looked like with a visualization tool. Luckily, `petgraph` allows to export a graphviz file which can be then used to visualize the nodes and edges.
From that, it was clear that a few nodes were acting as "bridges" between largers subnets of nodes with no particular arrangement besides being directed towards the next "bridge" layer. Those bridge layers comprised 4 to 5 nodes in my input, and were the only ones with more than 6 incoming edges, so I used that as my filter criterion.
To gather them, I sorted the graph in topological order and chunked them by their position offset compared to the previous node. When doing this, all the nodes from a bridge layer end up being at most 20 positions away from the previous node in the sorted list.
Finally, I progressed through each subnet, collecting information about how many paths lead to each one of the end layer's nodes. By multiplying with all the paths leading to each start layer's node, we get the overall total number of paths.

paris_transportation: Paris Transportation (2016)
A multiplex transportation network of Ile-de-France, jointly representing the road network, train network, and subway network. Nodes are intersections, rail stations or metro stations. Different modes of transportation are given by different layers. Within-layer edges represent direct transference by a particular mode of transportation, and between-layer edges represent the conjunction of those layers at that node.
This network ha…

A sea of soft, billowing clouds stretches out beneath a dramatic mountain landscape, their fluffy white peaks gently undulating like waves. The mountains rise majestically from the cloud cover, their rugged silhouettes softened by the misty atmosphere. Layer upon layer of forested ridges and peaks fade into the distance, creating a sense of depth and scale that feels almost infinite.

The scene is serene and ethereal, with the clouds obscuring the lower slopes and adding an air of mystery to th…

PIC12F683 full die image after wet chemical delayer to (approximately) polysilicon layer. There's a few areas in the right and bottom right that are overetched to substrate and a few spots in the analog and power rings that still have some M1 and even M2 remaining.
These are both full resolution scans with 20x/0.42 and 100x/0.90 objectives.
It's interesting to note how some features (most notably the silicon substrate in the overetched areas) are *more* visible in the low…

Two curious cows stand side by side on a gentle, grassy slope, their coats a mix of rich brown and white patches. Their eyes are bright and inquisitive, reflecting a sense of calm and gentle curiosity as they face the camera. The cows, adorned with yellow ear tags, seem at ease in their natural surroundings, their breath visible in the cool, crisp air.

The landscape around them is a blend of open pasture and rolling hills, dotted with a few scattered trees and framed by a dense forest in the b…
A breathtaking panoramic view unfolds under a vast, clear blue sky, where rolling hills and dense forests stretch out toward the horizon. The foreground is a gentle, sunlit slope covered in golden grass, leading the eye toward clusters of evergreen trees that dot the landscape. Their deep green needles contrast beautifully with the warm tones of the grass and the vibrant blue of the sky.

In the distance, layer upon layer of forested hills and mountains rise, their peaks softened by a delicate …
