What actually is the mastodon upgrade path across minor releases, like v4.3.18 -> v4.5.6? The release notes generally mention only upgrades from the most recent patch release in the same minor (vA.B.n-1 -> vA.B.n). Are huge jumps safe, assuming the new minimum requirements are met? Are backwards-time forward-version (eg v4.3.18 -> v4.4.0) upgrades invalid? Are all intervening database migrations handled automatically at service startup? Any gotchas?

Welp, that was non-trivial, but I've just managed to upgrade one of my Peertube instances from 7.3.0 -> 8.0.2 (includes an upgrade from PostgreSQL 13 -> 17)! Very impressive bit of kit, this! Well done Framasoft and friends!

I've just checked out a #Clojure project I last worked on thirteen years ago, compiled it, ran its unit tests, and they all passed. I then ran `lein ancient upgrade :check-clojure` to upgrade all the dependencies to their latest versions, ran the unit tests again, and they all passed.
I did get one 'deprecated' warning. I can live with that!

Ahhh. I've 'downgraded' to a (dell) laptop with physical touchpad buttons and dedicated pgup/pgdn keys, and it's sooooo much nicer.
When I finally need to upgrade from this laptop (a latitude 5410 which was originally released in 2020), hopefully lenovo will have continued their trend of going back to non-soldered ram in their t14 laptops.

• Reduces minimum Bash version requirement for installing Kitten to Bash 3.2 (was previously Bash 5 ). This removes the requirement for people on macOS to upgrade the ancient version of Bash that Apple ships with their desktop operating system. (If you’re on Linux none of this was ever an issue for you.)¹

Information from my (Dutch) grid operator Stedin: if you would like to upgrade your 1x25A (one-phase) connection to a 3x25A (three-phase) connection, that'll be €495.59.
And then "Oh wait, if we need to replace the connection cable we may add €1,786.82 to the bill"...

just looking at my archive of postgresql backups over the past 2 years of my mastodon instance.
In December 2023 just shy of 1 year since spinning it up, the compressed gz file of the database was 600MB.
By Aug 2024 it was 988MB
In April 2025 it was 1500MB
Today it is 1800MB.
That is a 2 user instance. Not small!
