Why do some Americans seem to prefer "upwards of" or even "north/south of ...", when talking about numbers/amounts?
To me, a non-native speaker, a number/amount can be greater/more, or smaller/less than another number/amount. I can probably guess that 11 is "upward" of 10, but that really depends on what your visual picture is of the list of numbers. In a text file, e.g., line 11 is clearly downward of line 10? I'm guessing that's my overthinkin…

Anyone good in statistics who can quickly answer a question? Assume I have an n-digit random binary number (for IT people: a bitstring). I calculate the number of 1s vs. 0s ("Hamming weight"). Expected to be usually ~0.5/50%. How does one calculate the probability for a given length n that it's above or below a certain value, i.e. <=40% or >=60%? And how many inputs would one on average need to get at least one such outlier?

American cities languish badly compared with transit leaders such as Sydney, Hong Kong and Barcelona,
based on the number of transit vehicles per 100,000 residents,
according to the Transportation for America study.
The gap is now so large that for major American cities to bring their public transit up to “world-class” status,
it would cost an enormous
$4.6trillion, involving 7,500 miles of new dedicated infrastructure for trains and buses, over the next 20 years…

The Web I grew up with and that grew up with me was already slowly fading. The Web of many people and organizations having their own small website. Capitalism and convenience lead to a concentration onto a small number of platforms and apps, but mostly these platforms let the rest be. People and small organizations and groups could still have their little website.

When I got in to tech, things felt fragile. After years of trying to fix things, I spent more years feeling as though the information apocalypse was immanent. Everywhere I turned, something was broken horribly. I can't even count the number of times I've just had to be like, "oh fuck. That's really bad. I knew it was bad, but like... oh fuck."
We have *all* had our identity stolen. I don't even know how many times my social security number has been in a data breach. How many of my medical records are on the market? But yeah, sure, let's accelerate that.
The problem was never that we couldn't find problems. The problem has always been "leadership" being unwilling to invest in fixing them. The problem has always been this mind-set of growth-at-any-cost.
I tuck these things away in my brain, and they sit there gnawing on my sanity, like little RFK worms.

Over the past couple of days I had the pleasure of chatting with a number of sharp undergrads who've applied to work on my project next year as part of the university's research opportunity program. It's been a real pleasure working with the group of four others I already have this academic year (their projects are really coming together!). I'm already looking forward to next year.

For some borrowers, moving abroad and out of reach of debt collectors can be tempting.
In interviews, people who made this decision cited relieving the psychological burden of student debt as a motivator,
as well as having a higher quality of life,
even on a lower salary,
outside the United States.

Start with the number of your birth month (January is 1, February is 2, and so on), add 9 squared, add 12 minus your birthday month number, multiply the value you have by itself, subtract 2.

Is there anything better than watching some poor dude flailing as he's hitting on some random woman? "I really like your shirt, it's such a cool vibe" "it's my work uniform."
I either winced or laughed at that, I can't remember.

Two multiplex networks of coauthorships among the Pierre Auger Collaboration of physicists (2010-2012) and among researchers who have posted preprints on arXiv.org (all papers up to May 2014). Layers represent different categories of publication, and an edge's weight indicates the number of reports written by the authors. These layers are one-mode projections from the underlying author-paper bipartite network.
