I've been thinking about getting a new action camera since my 14 year old GoPro died. I know people love the Insta360 cams but I'm not a fan of proprietary file formats.
I'm still pissed at GoPro for hardware that stopped working, but I do have a ton of GoPro mounts already and they just use MP4 for their video files.
The Insta360 can shoot in non-360 mode, though I don't know if that still uses the proprietary format.
I guess I gotta go read some reviews.

Unpopular urbanist opinion: Low density explains far less of U.S. car dependence than most urbanists think. It's much more about underfunding of bus service, missing sidewalks, lack of safe bike lanes, and other things that are less sexy than gleaming new highrises, which will in fact fail to achieve much mode shift on their own.

thinking of writing a cli tool with an interactive prompt and/or tui, and I'm questioning the need for non-tui interactive mode, it feels like an artifact of the teletype era.
weak justification: tui removes information from screen, which you might need. this is not a big deal in window systems, but console ttys are still useful.

Content warning: open source whinging

Ugh why is this always the way. I evaluated like 25 authentication servers for a small scale web project — I do want to support things like OIDC and Passkeys, so this is not something I really want to make myself like the old days of “use crypt() on the passwords and just make a simple database”.
5 of them are just dev mode garbage that will never see the light of day as a thing people use.
2 of them are home network nonsense for people who want enterprise login for their family, but where One Nerd controls the whole user-list.
15 of them are freemium "open source" where they withhold features for their enterprise tier and make them so unfortunately difficult to deploy, all requiring postgresql databases and a complex containerization setup and helm charts and oh so much.
and then there's kanidm, which is great except its opinions make it completely unusable for a community project, it's really more trying to fit the ‘enterprise unix authentication' space. Kudos to them for communicating it but it's the wrong tool, even if it is really good.
And then there's rauthy. Which is exactly what I want, well built and delightful, uses a lightweight embedded database, and even has a peer-to-peer sync for scalability. But customizing it is going to be a lesson in building it from source repeatedly, and its configuration is just a bit strange, and its frontend is extremely Backend Developer Wrote A Web UI. I guess I got a second project. And maybe a third to make debian packages of it.
Yet it really is the best of the options _by far_.
NLNet supported projects continue to punch above their weight class.

Anybody have recommendations for a solidly built duffel/gym bag that's going to last a long time? I typically see cloth tears as a secondary failure mode and zippers going bad as the primary problem.
Weight is not a consideration, this is for a car breakdown/emergency kit so it's gonna sit in the back of the car holding jumper cables, a first aid kit, some snacks and water bottles, etc. for years and hopefully not be used too often.

'mtr' is a TUI traceroute with a bunch of extra features (which I occasionally find more of) - in it's default mode it shows all the network hops between you and your destination - and shows packet loss on each link, which is great for finding who is to blame for a *partially* dodgy connection. Hitting 'Z' shows you the ASN for each hop, which lets you find who owns it; Hitting D gets a scrolling display so you can see where momentary blips happen.

It seems like GNOME Shell on Wayland doesn't like it if a GPU gets removed during runtime. At least on Bazzite, it threw me back into Gaming Mode and I had to switch to the desktop again, losing all my open windows.
Well, I expected worse, so I had saved my work before. 😄

Topological interface modes in aperiodic subwavelength resonator chains
Habib Ammari, Jiayu Qiu, Alexander Uhlmann
arxiv.org/abs/2511.18363 arxiv.org/pdf/2511.18363 arxiv.org/html/2511.18363
arXiv:2511.18363v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: We consider interface modes in block disordered subwavelength resonator chains in one dimension. Based on the capacitance operator formulation, which provides a first-order approximation of the spectral properties of dimer-type block resonator systems in the subwavelength regime, we show that a two-fold topological characterization of a block disordered resonator chain is available if it is of dominated type. The topological index used for the characterization is a generalization of the Zak phase associated with one-dimensional chiral-symmetric Hamiltonians. As a manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence principle, we prove that a localized interface mode occurs whenever the system consists of two semi-infinite chains with different topological characters. We also illustrate our results from a dynamic perspective, which provides an explicit geometric picture of the interface modes, and finally present a variety of numerical results to complement the theoretical results.

They say a change is as good as being arrested, or something like that, and being reckless (and retired) I upgraded my vintage laptop to #Ubuntu 25.10 because why not, it was already broken from a few upgrades ago, and it was already clear #plasma on #x11 with my Radeon 570 was, well, not fun.
So down the list I go. Those of you on Mac or that other O/S ("little&soft"?) won't understand, but I went through each of the various desktops, just to see, not expecting a lot given my hardware.
Well, Ubuntu on Wayland works now, but, egad, it is ugly. Gnome and its Classic look, well, almost the same. One of the others is just a blank screen, but remember, my machine was already broken.
I ended up in #xfce which I hadn't used in, omg, never mind, only I'm thinking, hey old man, learn some new tricks! Need to add panel and some widgets and…

Per replies, something I need to clarify:
We often use the word “neurotypical” to mean “neither autistic nor ADHD.” That might be useful as a shorthand, I guess, but it’s that mode of thought I’m specifically arguing against here: creating a single catch-all category defined as a negative, calling it “normal,” and assuming that it fits most people.
That doesn’t stand up to empirical scrutiny, and I don’t think it’s particularly healthy or helpful.

It's been quite a time since I went to a new location with the clear intent of location scouting. - It took me a while until I was able to "see" something as I was so much in walking/hiking-mode.
But it was a good experience to do it again.

This black-and-white image captures a serene and somewhat mysterious winter scene. A large, leafless tree stands prominently in the foreground, its intricate branches reaching out in all directions. The tree is surrounded by a light layer of frost, adding a delicate texture to the scene.

The background is shrouded in a thick fog, creating a sense of depth and obscuring the landscape beyond the tree. The fog gives the image an ethereal and tranquil quality, evoking a sense of calm and solitude.…

Abstract: In order to transport information with topological protection, we explore experimentally the fast transport time using edge states in one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. The transport time is investigated in both one- and two-dimensional models with topological non-trivial band structures. The fast transport is inherited with the wavefunction localization, giving a stronger effective coupling strength between the mode and the measurement leads. Also the transport time in one-dimension is independent of the system size. To verify the asertion, we implement a chain of split-ring resonators and their complementary ones with controllable hopping strengths. By performing the measurements on the group delay of non-trivially topological edge states with pulse excitations, the transport time between two edge states is directly observed with the chain length up to $20$. Along the route to harness topology to protect optical information, our experimental demonstrations provide a crucial guideline for utilizing photonic topological devices.

#Immich's search functionality is so dang powerful. It can search file metadata, OCR'd text, face recognition, and even by textual descriptions (”black cat on green grass”).
BUT you have to manually select the search mode. It is apparently not possible to "just search via every way". I think this should even be the default.

Abstract: The discovery of optical frequency combs (OFCs) has revolutionised science and technology by bridging electronics and photonics, driving major advances in precision measurements, atomic clocks, spectroscopy, telecommunications, and astronomy. However, current OFC systems still require further development to enable broader adoption in fields such as communication, aerospace, defence, and healthcare. There is a growing need for compact, portable OFCs that deliver high output power, robust self-referencing, and application-specific spectral coverage. On the conceptual side, progress toward such systems is hindered by an incomplete understanding of the fundamental principles governing OFC generation in emerging devices and materials, as well as evolving insights into the interplay between soliton and mode-locking effects. This roadmap presents the vision of a diverse group of academic and industry researchers and educators from Europe, along with their collaborators, on the current status and future directions of OFC science. It highlights a multidisciplinary approach that integrates novel physics, engineering innovation, and advanced researcher training. Topics include advances in soliton science as it relates to OFCs, the extension of OFC spectra into the visible and mid-infrared ranges, metrology applications and noise performance of integrated OFC sources, new fibre-based OFC modules, OFC lasers and OFC applications in astronomy.
