this *sounds* like SFMTA agreed to painting full 20-foot red curbs at every intersection, rather than the mere 10 feet at stop-controlled intersections that has been traffic engineer Ricardo Olea's policy. if so, good! parent organizing worked!

This week's #MythologyMonday theme is #sexwork! Acca Larentia was a mythical woman in Roman mythology. She was a beautiful prostitute (scortum) of roughly the same age as Romulus and Remus. She was awarded to Hercules as a prize in a game of dice by the guardian of his temple, and locked…

I couldn’t sleep. My brain kept spinning: I brush my teeth at night. Then I don’t eat, I don’t drink, I just sleep. Nothing goes in my mouth. So why, when I wake up, do I brush my teeth again? I already did it! Nothing changed. It’s like someone decided mornings need a repeat, but my mouth is just as clean as before.
Sometimes I wonder, who decided this? Why do we all just do it, like it’s written in the sky or something? I like the feeling of brushing but not the taste of toothpaste, …
Speaking of "Adhesiveness" in 1960 David Hockney made a painting titled Adhesiveness. Which arguably depicts Walt Whitman fucking David Hockney, the labels 23 23 and 4 8 being a basic numeric code. Along with We Two Boys Together Clinging these two early works are Hockney referencing Whitman and being explicit about being gay. More info in this article and this one.
Finished “My Friends” by Fredrik Backman and adored it. It’s not a perfect book, as there are a few moments that seem a little too saccharine, but where it excels, it REALLY excels.
The story of a painting, the friends depicted within it, and their friendship that made it all possible. A love letter to art and friendship, contrasted with the neglect, abuse, and mourning they would need each other to overcome.

"Silicon Valley’s era of innovation is over. This is their villain era. The era of the con. Having bled themselves dry of ideas, and all sense of moral decency, they’re now attempting to bleed us dry of our own humanity."

Last year, we bought a collection of 17 Georgia paintings by 19th- and 20th-century artists, many of whom are lesser known. Even the ones who are better known, like #NellChoateJones, aren't exactly _well_ known. We're excited to start studying these works and learning about the Georgia scenes many of them show.

This weekend I listened to the 'How to Age Up' podcast on climate change. A lot of good observations for how parents can help their children process the daily news cycle and manage their anxiety about the future.
Turns out one effective strategy is one I keep hearing from so many different sources - you build community. Building community makes communities more resilient. Building community makes you feel less alone - so you can help do the work to combat climate change/racism/…

As a Mass Effect aficionado It seems unfair to me that Shepard has a cabin full of cool ship models but I can't have any. Until now. Martin at printables.com posted an SR-1 3d model. My printer is single filament and low-resolution, so I had to do more work than him to pull it together. Plus painting PLA is a bit of a struggle. But now I have a model, however rough.
I'd still rather have what Shepard has.

"There was a recent 2024 study that showed us that individuals who survive an acute COVID-19 infection (...) on average will lose somewhere in the neighbourhood of two to six IQ points per infection."
"although your immune system can take on [a COVID] infection, you want to avoid testing it as much as possible because your body is sustaining damage with each infection that it survives."

Was just reading about Matilda Emmerich having her artwork declined by the Hawkesbury Agricultural Show because of its content. Am I the only one concerned about the censorship of artists in Australia these days?

This painting by Jacque-Louis David, depicts Romulus' bum in the "Intervention of the Sabine Women". The Sabines, neighbours of early Rome, attack the Romans to take back the women they abducted. The women intervene, pleading the warriors on both sides to stop the bloodshed. It was painted 1796-1799 as a plea…
