Health care, new cars and new homes feel unaffordable to most Americans,
a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll shows.
Most Americans say that they can afford basic necessities like their current housing costs, groceries, utilities and gasoline.
But large numbers across income levels also say larger expenses and the cost of things associated with an enjoyable life
— including taking a weeklong vacation
— are out of reach.
Overall, 53 percent of adults say…

@… I see a telegraph pole with wires crossing a track. Is it still a dirt track?
Plus what I thought was another telegraph pole, maybe an end pole, near the left of the photo, although I don't see cables from there to the central pole.
Second guess: a pub sign, no, it's something with a junction box on it. Utilities?
So I hacked my way into being Cyber Policy Initiative Senior Fellow at the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy. I'm workin on rural water critical infrastructure cybersecurity.
Do you even hack utilities? Please chat w me. I need to quickly find out where I"m wrong about some of my assumptions.
Still very entertained by the fact that I *finally* got into the University of Chicago. :D
Neighbors with solar panels can now trade energy directly with each other, thanks to a breakthrough cloud-based system from Washington State University.
The platform lets communities share power locally, cutting energy costs by up to 12% in testing. It's a glimpse of how neighborhoods could become mini power grids, keeping solar energy local instead of sending it back to utilities.

I have Unix “muscle memory” that is older than the millennium and remains valid on most of the machines I administer.
E.g. the old “net-tools” utilities (ifconfig, netstat, etc.)were supposedly replaced a couple of decades ago but they remain functional on most Unix-like platforms. Almost no one ever uses the iproute2 (i.e. ip, ss, etc.) tools. @…

Population of Vega? 1,208

When the government offers to provide rebates or tax credits to low income Canadians, as recently announced by our Federal Government, most welcome the extra cash. But it doesn't address the key issue in affordable food, housing, or utilities. All of that extra government cash, provided by taxpayers BTW, gets sucked up by corporations that continue to rake in record profits. If you want to truly attack the #Affordability problem then implement laws that penalize excess profit taking by corporations. Take key necessities (food, transit, shelter, utilities, etc.) and create public options that are run as cooperatives and have controlled profit margins.
Marit Styles points out the difference between food prices at independent grocers versus the big chains. The policy position from @… on establishing a public grocery option makes sense, as long as we also protect the small independent vendors in our communities.

Good Morning #Canada
A few weeks ago our local #CBCradio host was interviewing an debt counselor, likely due to the arrival of Christmas credit card bills. The segment reinforced the data that Canadians carry high levels of debt, unfortunately among the highest percentage of income worldwide. Mortgage debt, according to ##StatsCan, is flat to slightly declining, likely because new home purchases by younger Canadians is down, but car loans, personal lines of credit, and credit card debt are all up in 2025.
Our government continues to try and respond by offering tax credits and supplemental payments which invariably get sucked up by corporations. They have to change the game - build public housing or invest in leasehold or cooperative homes, build public options for utilities, internet, food or other necessities. Invest heavily in public transit and subsidize it so that it's low cost or free. Remove corporate profits from necessities.

Glad to see someone is at least trying to address the transmission capacity problem.
Last year I worked on a project with one of Oregon’s utilities related to optimizing the use of available transmission capacity, because there just isn’t enough.

Home batteries are quietly becoming a game-changer for grid stability. As installations surge, utilities are tapping residential storage to manage peak demand during extreme weather—deferring costly upgrades while boosting resilience.
The key to scaling? Treat it like market development, not just tech deployment. Simple enrollment, risk-sharing models, and coordinated action between utilities and manufacturers can unlock massive participation.
The Theory of Strategic Evolution: Games with Endogenous Players and Strategic Replicators

Abstract: This paper develops the Theory of Strategic Evolution, a general model for systems in which the population of players, strategies, and institutional rules evolve together. The theory extends replicator dynamics to settings with endogenous players, multi level selection, innovation, constitutional change, and meta governance. The central mathematical object is a Poiesis stack: a hierarchy of strategic layers linked by cross level gain matrices. Under small gain conditions, the system admits a global Lyapunov function and satisfies selection, tracking, and stochastic stability results at every finite depth. We prove that the class is closed under block extension, innovation events, heterogeneous utilities, continuous strategy spaces, and constitutional evolution. The closure theorem shows that no new dynamics arise at higher levels and that unrestricted self modification cannot preserve Lyapunov structure. The theory unifies results from evolutionary game theory, institutional design, innovation dynamics, and constitutional political economy, providing a general mathematical model of long run strategic adaptation.

Managed charging of EVs (called 'smart charging' in Europe) could save California $5 - 18 billion on distribution grid upgrades by 2040. Increased electrification (transport, buildings) offsets increased infrastructure costs by -0.2-4.5¢/kWh for all.
